Predictive statistical models are used in the area of adaptive user interfaces to model user behavior and to infer user information from interaction events in an implicit and non-intrusive way. This information constitutes the basis for tailoring the user interface to the needs of the individual user. Consequently, the user analysis process should model the user with information, which can be used in various systems to recognize user activities, intentions and roles to accomplish an adequate adaptation to the given user and his current task. In this paper we present the improved prediction algorithm KO*/19, which is able to recognize, beside interaction predictions, behavioral patterns for recognizing user activities. By means of this extension, the evaluation shows that the KO*/19-Algorithm improves the Mean Prediction Rank more than 19% compared to other well-established prediction algorithms. ©2010 IEEE.

We present a novel approach for efficient limit volume evaluation on Catmull-Clark (CC) subdivision solids. Although several analogies exist between subdivision surfaces and subdivision volumes, extending Stam’s limit evaluation technique from 2 to 3 dimensions is not straightforward, as irregularities and boundaries introduce new challenges in the volumetric case. We present new direct evaluation techniques for irregular volumetric topologies and boundary cells, which allow for calculating the limit of CC subdivision solids at arbitrary parameter values in constant time. Evaluation of limit points is a central aspect when using CC solids for applications such as simulation and multi-material additive manufacturing, or as a compact volumetric representation scheme for continuous scalar fields. We demonstrate that our approach is faster than existing evaluation techniques for every topological configuration or target parameter (u, v, w) that requires more than two local subdivision steps. © 2018 The Author(s).

In this paper we present a novel method to evaluate guidance systems and navigation solutions for public infrastructures based on an immersive virtual environment in combination with a mobile eye tracking system. It opens new opportunities for wayfinding studies in public infrastructures already during the planning phase. Our approach embeds an interface for natural locomotion in the virtual environment offering significant advantages related to the user's spatial perception as well as physical and cognitive demands. Accurate measurements of position, locomotion and gaze within the virtual environment enable a great simplification for the analysis of eye tracking data. We conducted a study with participants that included virtual and real world scenarios within a train station. First results exhibit similar behaviour of participants in the real and virtual environment, confirming the comparability and applicability of our method.

Today's politicians are confronted with new (digital) ways to tackle complex decision-making problems. In order to make the right decisions profound analysis of the problems and possible solutions has to be performed. Therefore policy analysts need to collaborate with external experts consulted as advisors. Due to different expertises of these stakeholders the whole process may suffer from knowledge gaps. In our approach, we describe a concept to bridge these knowledge gaps by introducing information visualization and visual analytics to the policy analysis domain. Therefore, we refine a standard policy cycle at the stages relevant for the policy analysis. Secondly, we characterize the main stakeholders in the process, and identify knowledge gaps between these roles. Finally, we emphasize the merits of including advanced visualization techniques into the policy analysis process, and describe visualization as a facet bridging the knowledge gaps in a collaborative policy making life-cycle. © Gesellschaft fur Informatik, Bonn 2013.

Effective visual exploration of large data sets is an important problem. A standard technique for mapping large data sets is to use hierarchical data representations (trees, or dendrograms) that users may navigate. If the data sets get large, so do the hierarchies, and e?ective methods for the navigation are required. Traditionally, users navigate visual representations using desktop interaction modalities, including mouse interaction. Motivated by recent availability of lowcost eye-tracker systems, we investigate application possibilities to use eye-tracking for controlling the visual-interactive data exploration process. We implemented a proof-ofconcept system for visual exploration of hierarchic data, exemplified by scatter plot diagrams which are to be explored for grouping and similarity relationships. The exploration includes usage of degree-of-interest based distortion controlled by user attention read from eye-movement behavior. We present the basic elements of our system, and give an illustrative use case discussion, outlining the application possibilities. We also identify interesting future developments based on the given data views and captured eye-tracking information. Copyright © 2016 by the paper's authors.

This paper describes the design and the implementation of a distributed object repository that offers cultural heritage experts and practitioners a working platform to access, use, share and modify digital content. The principle of collecting paradata to document each step in a potentially long sequence of processing steps implies a number of design decisions for the data repository, which are described and explained. Furthermore, we provide a description of the concise API our implementation. Our intention is to provide an easy-to-understand recipe that may be valuable also for other data repository implementations that incorporate and operationalize the more theoretical concepts of intellectual transparency, collecting paradata, and compatibility to semantic networks. © The Eurographics Association 2010.

computer graphics is a very active field, with new knowledge being published every day at a high rate. There is, therefore, some pressure to regularly review our teaching contents and adjust accordingly. Among the courses on a standard curriculum, the introductory computer graphics course is very often the door for students into the exciting area of computer graphics. It is also the opportunity to attract and engage the best talent for the field. In this paper, we address the question of what we are teaching in the introductory computer graphics course as a community. Our main motivation was to find out how our peers are teaching this first course and use this knowledge to ease the redesign of our introductory course. We have surveyed 20 introductory computer graphics undergraduate courses from higher level educational institutions from around the world. Our source of information was purely online available resources, such as the weekly list of topics, usually provided by the professors themselves. We gathered and processed this data using a bottom-up approach. The final top level list of subjects and percentages for the introductory computer graphics courses is as follows: Rendering (75%), Modeling (14%), Animation (7%), Fundamentals (3%), and visualization (1%). Although there is a common body of knowledge and proposed standards for an introductory course in computer graphics, we also noticed considerable variation among institutions. We believe this survey will be helpful for institutions considering designing a new introductory course from scratch or redesigning an existing one. © 2017 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2017 The Eurographics Association.

Image segmentation (or masking) finds a very useful use case within 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage objects. The 3D reconstructions can be accelerated, reconstructing the object without any background noise. Conventional segmentation methods can calculate erroneous masks for certain objects and environments, which can lead to errors within the reconstruction: Parts of the 3D reconstruction may be missing or are incorrectly reconstructed, which contradicts adequate archiving. The automated iterative Multi-View Stereo (MVS) scanning process makes it necessary to obtain masks that reconstruct the object in the best possible way, regardless of the environment, the stabilizing mount, the color of the background and the object. In addition, it should not be necessary to tweak the best possible parameters for conventional masking procedures and to create masks manually. State-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) segmentation networks will be trained and applied to the MVS scans to verify the behavior of the associated 3D reconstructions and the automated iterative scanning process. We present the Bio Scene Graph (BioSG) for visualization of biomolecular structures based on the scene graph system OpenSG. The hierarchical model of primary, secondary and tertiary structures of molecules used in the organic chemistry is mapped to a graph of nodes when loading molecular files. We show that using BioSG, displaying molecules can be integrated in other applications, for example in medical applications. Additionally, existing algorithms and programs can be easily adapted to display the results with BioSG. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Digitization of cultural heritage is of growing importance, both for its preservation for coming generations in the face of looming dangers of natural decay or intentional destruction, and current generations, that increasingly have access to virtual cultural heritage for interactive exploring or scientific analysis. These goals can only be achieved by 3D replicas at reasonable quality and resolution, to come as close as possible to the original. This brings about several challenges to overcome. The challenge of digitizing huge numbers of artefacts is addressed by CultLab3D, the first fully automatic 3D digitization system. Another challenge is the size of objects, as each digitization system is designed for a certain optimum measurement range, leaving which results in loss of quality. Due to optical and mechanical constraints, most systems are not able to faithfully reconstruct objects under a certain size limit in their full geometric detail. Historic coins are one good example, where the deterioration of the surface structure in most cases has progressed to a degree that it not even is perceptible through the fingernail. This challenge is addressed by a modular extension of CultLab3D, the MesoScanner, which is a structured light system that breaks limits in depth resolution through a mechanical lens-shifting extension, allowing physically shifting of fringe patterns on top of the well-known multi-period phase shift method. This is where this work adds two major improvements: First, the signal to noise ratio and thus reconstruction quality has been improved significantly through several algorithmic processing steps. Second, the physical limitation of the measurement range was removed using a 2D actuator steering the object mount, thus allowing for a measurement range at theoretically arbitrary size.
