Feature-based visualization of flow fields has proven as an effective tool for flow analysis. While most flow visualization techniques operate on vector field data, our visualization techniques make use of a different simulation output: Particle Tracers. Our approach solely relies on integral lines that can be easily obtained from most simulation software. The task is the visualization of dense integral line data. We combine existing methods for streamline visualization, i. e. illumination, transparency, and halos, and add ambient occlusion for lines. But, this only solves one part of the problem: because of the high density of lines, visualization has to fight with occlusion, high frequency noise, and overlaps. As a solution we propose non-automated choices of transfer functions on curve properties that help highlighting important flow features like vortices or turbulent areas. These curve properties resemble some of the original flow properties. With the new combination of existing line drawing methods and the addition of ambient occlusion we improve the visualization of lines by adding better shape and depth cues. The intelligent use of transfer functions on curve properties reduces visual clutter and helps focusing on important features while still retaining context, as demonstrated in the examples given in this work.

Nowadays there is a gap between the possibilities and the massively existing data on the one side and the user as main worker on the other side. In different scenarios e.g. search, exploration, analysis and policy-modeling a user has to deal with massive information, but for this work he usually gets a static designed system. So meanwhile data-driven work-processes are increasing in its complexity the support of the users who are working with these data is limited on basic features. Hence this paper describes a concept for a process-supporting approach, which includes relevant aspects of users' behaviors in support him to successfully finish also complex tasks. This will be achieved by a process-based guidance with an automatic tools selection for every process and activity on the one hand. And on the other hand the consideration of expert-level of a user to a single task and process. This expert-level will be classified during each task and process interaction and allow the automatically selection of optimal tools for a concrete task. In final the user gets for every task an automatically initialized user-interface with useful and required tools.

Nowadays daily office work consists of dealing with big numbers of data and data sources, and furthermore of working with complex computer programs. In consequence many users have problems to use such programs effective and efficient. In particular beginners have significant problems to use the programs correctly due to complex functionality and interaction options. To avoid this overload of the user, the Information visualization community has recently developed some approaches that aim to support the users. Unfortunately, these approaches are limited to one special aspect, and sometimes they are just appropriate for one special task. Thus, in this paper we introduce a process-oriented user-supporting approach. It allows selecting adequate supporting techniques in correlation to a performed process and activity to guide the user and help him to solve his task. Furthermore, we show the benefits of designing programs and applications, which implement process definitions for the existing tasks to provide the user with better process orientation. This guides the user through difficult and complex processes.

In recent decades, researchers of archaeological 3D digitalization found that the collection and archive of processing intermediate data are extremely tiresome tasks. They need large of man power and material resources, even though, mistakes can be raised and break the whole working chain. The traditional documentation of digitalization process is also a pending challenge, although, the ISO standard CIDOC-CRM (ISO 21127:2006) has been introduced to the archaeologists and museum professionals since years, but there are still some obvious gaps between practice and theory: (1) How to connect the discrete archaeologists, museums, CH research institutions, and the public? (2) How to ensure the integrity of whole digitalization process and simplify the process? (3) How to maximize the usability of the public digital objects in CH community? (4) How to long term preserve the huge amount of datasets? (5) How to present and disseminate the digital object to the public? This paper presents an operational and optimal infrastructure that realizes not only a distributed storage system, but also a content management system. This infrastructure works as a backbone of whole digitalization process, provides a complete solution suite for archaeologists, museum professionals, museum visitors, and IT technicians. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a new method of simulating and visualizing smoke and steam clouds in virtual environments (VEs). We use a particle system approach, but reduce the particle numbers to decrease the computation and rendering times. Special care, however is taken for the presentation quality of the clouds. From every viewing point (even within the clouds), the VE user does not have the impression that the clouds are hollow polyhedrons, but rather fuzzy objects.

Restoration of optical images degraded by atmospheric turbulence and various types of noise is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose an optical image restoration method based on a Reaction- Diffusion Equation and Photometric Similarity (RDEPS). We exploit photometric similarity and geometric closeness of the optical image by combining a photometric similarity function and a appropriately defined reaction-diffusion equation. Our resulting RDEPS filter is used to restore images degraded by atmospheric turbulence and noise, including Gaussian noise and impulse noise. Extensive experimental results show that our method outperforms other recently developed methods in terms of PSNR and SSIM. Moreover, the computational efficiency analysis shows that our RDEPS provides efficient restoration of optical images. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

When creating immersive interactive virtual worlds, it is important to not only provide plausible visuals, but also to allow the user to interact with the virtual scene in a natural way. While rigid-body physics simulations are widely used to provide basic interaction, realistic soft-body deformations of virtual objects are challenging and therefore typically not *** present a client-server architecture for interactive physics-based deformation, which makes it possible to add physically accurate response to interaction to any virtual environment. The architecture is highly flexible, can be used from any web enabled client, and facilitates synchronization of computed deformations across multiple users and devices.

computer assisted operation planning systems win more and more recognition in the field of surgery. These systems offer new possibilities to prepare an intervention with the goal to shorten the expansive time in the operation room required for the intervention. The safest and most effective surgical approach should be selected. But often, it is difficult to transfer the output of the planning system to the intra-operative situation and so to consider the planning results in the real intervention. At the fraunhofer institute for computer graphics (IGD) in Darmstadt and the Centre for Advanced Media Technology (CAMTech) in Singapore, methods are developed to bridge the gap between the external planning session and the intra-operative case: augmented reality (AR) techniques are used to overlap preoperative scanned image data as well as results of the planning session to the operation field.
