Computer modelling of 2D drawings is becoming increasingly popular in modern design as can be witnessed in the shift of modern computer modelling applications from software requiring specialised training to ones targeted for the general consumer market. Despite this, traditional sketching is still prevalent in design, particularly so in the early design stages. Thus, research trends in computer-aided modelling focus on the the development of sketch based interfaces that are as natural as possible. In this paper, we present a hybrid sketch based interface which allows the user to make draw sketches using offline as well as online sketching modalities, displaying the 3D models in an immersive setup, thus linking the object interaction possible through immersive modelling to the flexibility allowed by paper-based sketching. The interface was evaluated in a user study which shows that such a hybrid system can be considered as having pragmatic and hedonic value. In the area of product-based control of manufacturing processes, the potential to integrate intelligent products in process control has been recognized several times. However, the effect of greatly varying intelligent products on the control and hybrid system dynamics of the individual (sub-) processes have not been investigated. This article begins with a definition of product-intelligence and a distributed data and interface model. Based on this, a decentralized hybrid reconfiguration structure with different intelligence-based reconfiguration strategies as a function of varying product properties is presented, using the example of a conveyor belt system. Through the implementation on a industrial controller, it has been shown that the concept represents a further module in the realization of cyber-physical systems through comprehensive analysis and synthesis of a highly flexible hybrid control loop.

The configuration and deployment of global production networks, raises questions about the interchange of data and information between varied and different organisations, domains and systems. Standards should be an instrumental part of forming a basis to enable seamless interoperability, yet there is no clear support for global production networks. This paper sets out a reference ontology for global production networks being developed as a basis for interoperability between systems, with the potential for it to be developed as a standard. Two mega trends in product engineering require a re-thinking of established ways of working: The technical evolution to intelligent technical systems and the re-design of value creation networks, now integrating partners from all over the world. Due to this, there is a growing interest in the systems Engineering (SE) approach. Yet, the implementation of SE in organizational structures is challenging for enterprises outside aircraft industry. Friedenthal suggests the deployment of a multidisciplinary SE-team responsible for requirements, architecture and analysis of the system as well as integrating and testing. We expect the shared service concept known from administration as promising to generate synergistic effects for a distributed value creation: Shared services centralize a subset of existing decentralized business functions in semi-autonomous business units. This promotes amongst others value generation, quality and improved service for internal customers. We present a first approach for implementing Model-Based systems Engineering based on Shared Services.

In our modern information societies, we not only use and welcome computers; we are highly dependent upon them. There is a downside of this kind of progress, however. Computers are not 100% reliable. They are insecure. They are vulnerable to attackers. They can either be attacked directly, to disrupt their services, or they can be abused in clever ways to do the bidding of an attacker as a dysfunctional ***-makers and experts alike always struggle with the amount of interdisciplinary knowledge needed to understand the nuts and bolts of modern information societies and their relation to security, the implications of technological or political progress or the lack thereof. This holds in particular for new challenges to come. These are harder to understand and to categorize; their development is difficult to predict. To mitigate this problem and to enable more foresight, The Secure Information Society provides an interdisciplinary spotlight onto some new and unfolding aspects of the uneasy relationship between information technology and information society, to aid the dialogue not only in its current and ongoing struggle, but to anticipate the future in time and prepare perspectives for the challenges ahead.

This paper introduces a new concept for flexible motion planning and control of industrial robots. Instead of a closed monolithic architecture, an open service-based framework is proposed. The services can be run hardware-independent on a decentralized IT infrastructure (Cloud) allowing a fast reconfiguration of control modules and their multiple usage in different tasks. The services can be run on a dedicated PC or on individual virtual machines inside a single computing cluster. The proposed service-based framework was implemented and tested for the motion planning of a robotic manipulator. Effects on control performance, availability and scalability are investigated and documented. © 2015 IEEE.

The increasing global competition within today's manufacturing industries is confronting organizations with interdisciplinary challenges that require intellectual expertise and innovative technological solutions in various knowledge areas. Research organizations and manufacturing companies can improve their overall performance by bundling expertise in collaborative innovation networks. For this purpose a systematic Benchmarking approach has been developed by fraunhofer ipk to match the competencies and capacities within a pool of organizations in order to facilitate a sustainable cooperation in terms of resources, customers and R&D topics. Furthermore, a KPI-based identification of best performing network-partners allows an initiation of Best-Practice transfers to gain sustainable competitive advantages for the whole network. Based on a methodological approach, the identification of collaboration potentials and Best-Practices is supported by software tools that visualize the results in an understandable and applicable way.

CFD Simulation of the Abrasive Flow Machining Process

For the Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) process, a highly viscous polymeric carrier mixed with abrasive grain is used for deburring, edge rounding and the general improvement of surface quality of workpieces with complex geometries. At present, time-consuming and expensive feasibility studies and parameter analyses are required for each new application. According to a market study of 2012, more than 50% of AFM users request the availability of a process simulation to model and optimize the flow and predict the results by use of numerical methods. The key challenge is the accurate description of the complex behavior of the viscoelastic abrasive medium. This paper examines a CFD approach to the flow simulation by integrating the non-Newtonian, shear-thinning characteristics of a Maxwell fluid into the inelastic Navier-Stokes equations. With the implementation of the viscoelastic material model in ANSYS CFX, physically reasonable results can be achieved and validated by experimental machining results of additively manufacturedSLM workpieces. The results for flat, reference workpieces as well as for turbine bladesare discussed and compared to experimental results.

In September 2012 a European collaborative project was launched entitled "Hard Material Small-Batch Industrial Machining Robot (HEPHESTOS)". HEPHESTOS' main objective is to develop novel technologies for the robotic hard material removal that will provide standard industrial robots with advanced techniques in machining planning, programming and real-time control. Hard materials machining has recently attracted great attentions from the advanced industries, in particular, the European automotive, the aerospace and the biomedical industries. However, the existing technology failed to provide these industries with a cost efficient solution to cope with small-batch production of large and complex-shaped products. The project HEPHESTOS, with its focus on developing sophisticated methods in robotic manufacturing, shall give rise to a cost-efficient solution in hard materials machining for this small-batch production of highly customized products through the application of industrial robots. © VDE VERLAG GMBH Berlin Offenbach.

Microcrack Formation During Gas Metal Arc Welding of High-Strength Fine-Grained Structural Steel

The recent development of high-performance-modified spray arc processes in gas metal arc welding due to modern digital control technology and inverter power sources enables a focused spray arc, which results in higher penetration depths and welding speed. However, rnicrocracks occurred in the weld metal while approaching the process limits of the modified spray arc, represented by a 20-mm double layer DV-groove butt-weld, These cracks were detected in structural steel exhibiting a yield strength level of up to 960 MPa and are neither dependent on the used weld power source nor a consequence of the modified spray arc process itself. The metallographic and fractographic investigations of the rather exceptional fracture surface lead to the classification of the microcracks as hot cracks, The effects of certain welding parameters on the crack probability are clarified using a statistical design of experiment. However, these microcracks do not impact the design specification for toughness in the Charpy V-notch test （absorbed energy at -40 ℃ for the present material is 30 J）.
