Sustainability is characterized by complex interplay between economic, environmental and social aspects and a temporal dimension. The public perception is often mistakenly limited to single aspects due to deliberated influence by marketing or misuse. Reliable scientific articles usually address expert audience only. To create a broad public understanding knowledge has to be available and comprehensible. In the World Wide Web various concepts are applied to represent knowledge each utilizing different sets of media without interactive elements. To get an overall picture of sustainability an understanding of complex relationships is necessary. Non-interactive text based approaches lack the necessary capabilities to present this picture. This paper presents a graphical approach involving a simplified product configurator based on an ontology developed in the CRC1026. It embodies gamification elements to draw people's attention and uses ontological trees to illustrate relationships.

The ecosystem of software-defined networking (SDN) is still characterized by a multitude of different controller platforms, each with its own programming model, execution model, and capabilities. This creates a danger of a controller lock-in for both developers of SDN control applications and operators of SDN networks. Since no single controller platform appears to dominate the ecosystem for the foreseeable future, there is a need for a method that enables the unification of different controller technologies. This paper describes a preliminary version of the Net IDE method, whose goal is to deliver an integrated process for SDN development that allows developers to write, test and deploy applications independently from the underlying SDN technology.

Uniaxial vehicles for goods transport such as hand trucks are popular with many transport tasks. They offer intuitive manoeuvrability with little space requirements. The disadvantage of this class of pedestrian controlled means of transportation is the need for the user to apply force for stabilisation and propulsion. To eliminate this disadvantage a solution approach is to equip the vehicle with a controlled drive system providing force for both balancing and propulsion. To make possible stabilisation of a uniaxial vehicle for goods transport without need for external support the frame's pitch angle must be adapted with every change of load, which is a fundamental difference to uniaxial vehicles without payload or for passenger transportation. To make possible intuitive and convenient pedestrian controlled manoeuvre even with high payload the controller must set translational and rotational speed based on low interaction forces applied by the user going along. To allow for cheap production we developed a balance and manoeuvre controller not requiring sensor information of both load's absolute weight and user interaction forces. Main components of the concept are a balance controller including a Kalman state estimator for identification of frame's and load's combined centre of gravity's pitch angle, a manoeuvre controller based on state space control and a sophisticated program sequence switching automatically between operating modes for reload and manoeuvre. The control concept was designed and implemented using our new uniaxial vehicle system for urban goods transport. This vehicle is the first electrically powered hand truck that both balances adaptive to changing payload and allows for pedestrian controlled manoeuvre without need to operate control levers for setting speed or steering angle. The experimental results presented in this paper show the correct operation of the approach.

The engineering of mechatronic systems is a challenge due to the various domains involved. MBSE is regarded as the future paradigm of product engineering to face this challenge not restricted to any domain or industry. The core concept is a system model which allows a holistic perspective of the system in a domain-spanning way. MBSE gained momentum within the last years. Nevertheless, numerous barriers exist that inhibit the implementation of MBSE;especially there is little attention on the socio-technical aspects of product engineering as stakeholders, their roles and responsibilities and how to organize modeling processes in projects. Application scenarios are suggested as an approach to define and analyze situations in product engineering, when the system model provides benefit. It describes e.g. ways to create or to use the system model and to collaborate and interact on them. This will help to gain more acceptance of the MBSE approach.

In September 2012 a European collaborative project was launched entitled "Hard Material Small-Batch Industrial Machining Robot (HEPHESTOS)". HEPHESTOS' main objective is to develop novel technologies for the robotic hard material removal that will provide standard industrial robots with advanced techniques in machining planning, programming and real-time control. Hard materials machining has recently attracted great attentions from the advanced industries, in particular, the European automotive, the aerospace and the biomedical industries. However, the existing technology failed to provide these industries with a cost efficient solution to cope with small-batch production of large and complex-shaped products. The project HEPHESTOS, with its focus on developing sophisticated methods in robotic manufacturing, shall give rise to a cost-efficient solution in hard materials machining for this small-batch production of highly customized products through the application of industrial robots.
