The development of cutting tools with closed internal cooling systems has been the subject of recent research. The implementation of such a technology would bring many advantages in the cutting process. The generated heat can be removed from the process through the use of cooling structures inside the cutting tool without contamination of the cooling fluid. The challenge in the design of an internally cooled tool is to find the optimal balance between the tool's thermal and mechanical properties. Due to the low thermal conductivity of cemented carbides the cooling structures must be as close as possible to the tool tip, without weakening the mechanical stability. Cutting experiments have shown that internal cooling can be effective as an alternative to or in addition to conventional cooling. Experiments were carried out with different cooling structure designs and workpiece materials. Tool wear was evaluated, the machined surfaces analysed, and the results compared with those using conventional cooling processes. Furthermore, the thermal performance and the mechanical stability of the tool were examined in a series of FEM-simulations. With a continuous temperature gradient between the tool tip and the cooling structure thermal shock can be minimised and the tool life increased. Finally, the internal cooling system offers the potential to measure and influence the tool temperature.

Within this paper the application of an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm to inspection planning is presented. Since inspection planning is a time consuming task, optimizing these activities plays a major role in the quality inspection field. In this paper the extraction procedures of local inspection path planning (LIPP) and measurement device selection (MDS) to travelling salesman problem (TSP) and subset problem are presented respectively. An ACO algorithm based on Max-Min Ant System (MMAS) is presented for solving the problems. Experiment on industrial workpiece shows the applicability of ACO to inspection planning.

Large scale events require different traffic management information and mobility services compared to regular conditions. Without an extensive infrastructure, traffic information for such cases could be generated through combing FCD borne traffic data with online traffic data extracted from airborne images. The paper will describe the methodology of the integration of these different data sources.

Collaborations between SME are different than the traditional OEM-supplier chains. Here are other requirements in the focus of interest: Low costs are often more important than powerful and complex software products as well as flexibility to integrate with any kind of application is more necessary than already available integration solution for big enterprise application, which are only sporadic used in SMEs. Therefore the CoVES (Collaborative Virtual Engineering for SMEs) project followed a new approach for flexible integration of web applications in collaboration environments. The approach differs from the currently promoted service oriented architectures. This paper focuses on two technical aspects of the CoVES architecture: Mashup concept, which is a technology for a seamless integration of web applications, and Single Sign On for an easy access on the distributed data sources.
Conducting 3D simulation of milling processes still causes high efforts. There, only small workpiece sections can be modelled so far, instead of the entire contact width. Approaches using 2D simulation pose an interes...

This paper focuses on errors which are possible to occur in the depth measurements of range cameras. Range cameras can capture 3D information of a scene by sending out infrared light and then measuring the reflections. Wrong measurements occur at the edges of objects where the depth level changes. A depth value between the foreground and background level is measured which creates a so-called "flying pixel" when displaying the 3D *** this paper different methods for the identification of flying pixels are presented and compared. The advantages and drawbacks of each method are discussed. Then a simple method for the correction of flying pixel errors is presented and its limitations are shown. The final method for correction is presented which is based on segmenting the pixel matrix into horizontal and vertical scanlines. After segmentation, linear segments can be identified to which the pixels can be mapped. The paper concludes with the evaluation of the presented methods to show their effectiveness.

As immersive 3-d user interfaces reach broader acceptance, their use as sketching media is attracting both commercial and academic research. So far little is known about user requirements and cognitive aspects of immersive 3-d sketching. Also its integration into the workflow of virtual product development is far from being solved. In this paper we present results from two focus group expert discussions and a comparative user study on immersive 3-d sketching which we conducted among professional furniture designers. The results of the focus groups show a strong interest in using the three-dimensional space as a medium for conceptual design. Users expect it to provide new means for the sketching process, namely spatiality, one-to-one proportions, associations, and formability. Eight groups of functions required for 3-d sketching were generated during the discussions. The results from the user study show that both the sketching process and the resulting sketches differ in the 2-d and 3-d condition, namely in terms of the perceived fluency of sketch creation, of the perceived appropriateness for the task, of the perceived stimulation by the medium, movement speed, sketch sizes, details, functional aspects, and usage time. We argue that both 2-d and 3-d sketching are relevant for early conceptual design. As progress towards 3-d sketching, new tangible interactive tools are needed which account for the user's perceptual and cognitive abilities.
