We present results of providing database support to biomedicine via federation of SDB Cooperation/Integration based upon the KEGG GUI for molecular biology. The federation provides a common link to three molecular biology databases. The added value of the federation is freedom from consulting multiple references to ascertain the full set of enzymatic reactions in a metabolic pathway, and the option of selecting multiple queries to submit to the federated SDBs. Each of the SDBs is extensive, but incomplete. The union of the SDBs, implemented transparently by the federation, is more complete. Each SDB provides a different approach to the options available for data presentation and a different set of Web server tools for data analysis. Thus, an important part of the added value of the federation is the cross-fertilization available in the union of the molecular biological content, the presentation of data, and the tools available for analysis.

In this paper, we propose a qualitative, inductive method for characterizing and evaluating software maintenance processes, thereby identifying their specific problems and needs. This method encompasses a set of procedures which attempt to determine causal links between maintenance problems and flaws in the maintenance organization and process. This allows for a set of concrete steps to be taken for maintenance quality and productivity improvement, based on a tangible understanding of the relevant maintenance issues in a particular maintenance environment. Moreover, this understanding provides a solid basis on which to define relevant software maintenance models and measures. A case study of the application of this method, called Q-MOPP, is presented to further illustrate its feasibility and benefits. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

In this paper, issues about workflow systems adaptability and evolution capability are discussed from two perspectives, namely design and evolution of workflow systems from a continuous software engineering perspective as well as redesign and runtime on-the-fly modifications of workflow models from an application perspective. Special attention is paid to a suitable infrastructure support for designing more configurable and adaptive workflow systems. A new workflow language, called Higher-Order Object Nets (HOON), is introduced The intended uses of HOON are, on one side, to directly describe real-work business processes, and on the other side, to serve as a build-lime composition model and a run-time overall control skeleton qi the underlying software components that support individual business activities. On the basis of HOON and CORBA, a layered, framework-based and generic system architecture is presented.

This paper reports on progress in the construction of an integrated tool environment for the migration of character-based panels of mainframe applications into graphical user interfaces. It presents our approach for static analysis of character-based panels that is based on the identification of dialog entities in panels using generalized descriptions of panel areas and describes a tool supporting the identification process. The goal of our approach is to increase the level of automation in the migration process compared to existing migration tools.

The effectiveness of software engineering technologies depends very much on the situation in which they are applied. In order to further improve software development practices one needs to explicitly describe and utilise knowledge about application domains of software engineering technologies. The paper suggests a modelling formalism for supporting systematic reuse of software engineering technologies during planning of software projects and improvement programs.

During phase two of the SPICE trials, the Preliminary Draft Technical Report (PDTR) version of ISO/IEC 15504 is being empirically evaluated. This document set is intended to become an international standard for software process assessment. One thread of evaluations being conducted during these trials is the extent of reliability of assessments based on ISO/IEC PDTR 15504. In this paper we present the first evaluation of the reliability of assessments based on the PDTR version of the emerging international standard. In particular, we evaluate the interrater agreement of assessments. Our results indicate that interrater agreement is considerably high, both for individual ratings at the capability attribute level, and for the aggregated capability levels. In general, these results are consistent with those obtained using the previous version of the software process assessment document set (known as SPICE version 1.0), where capability ratings were also found to have generally high interrater agreement. Furthermore, it was found that the current 4-point scale cannot be improved substantially by reducing it to a 3-point or to a 2-point scale. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paperpresents a controlled experimentfocusing on the impact of applying quality design principles such as the ones provided by Coad and Yourdon on the maintainability of object-oriented design documents. Results, which repeat thefindings of a previous study;strongly suggest that such design principles have a benejicial eflect on the maintainability of object-oriented design documents. It is argued that object-oriented design documents are sensitive to poor design practices because the cognitive complexity introduced becomes increasingly unmanageable. However;as our ability to generalise these results is limited, they should be considered as preliminaq\ i.e., it is very likely that they can only be generalised to programmers with little object-oriented training and programming experience. Such programmers can, however;be commonly found on maintenance projects. As well as additional research, external replications of this study are required to confirm the results and achieve conjdence in these findings.

Reuse of software knowledge is a principle for improving productivity and reliability of software development. To achieve this, reuse must be done systematically. This means that processes for retrieving, reusing, revising, and retaining have to be defined. At the same time organizational issues (such as the establishment of a separate organizational unit responsible for organizational learning) must be considered. In this paper we compare software knowledge reuse models to the CBR cycle of Aamodt and Plaza [1] and show that the approaches are very similar. We suggest to extend the CBR cycle by including organizational issues explicitly and conclude that CBR is a promising technology for realizing software knowledge reuse if our suggested organizational extensions are considered. © Springer-Verlag Bedm Heidelberg 1997.
