Urban population growth has significantly complicated the management of mobility systems, demanding innovative tools for planning. Generative Crowd-Flow (GCF) models, which leverage machine learning to simulate urban movement patterns, offer a promising solution but lack sufficient evaluation of their fairness—a critical factor for equitable urban planning. We present an approach to measure and benchmark the fairness of GCF models by developing a first of its kind set of fairness metrics specifically tailored for this purpose. Using observed flow data, we employ a stochastic biased sampling approach to generate multiple permutations of Origin-Destination datasets, each demonstrating intentional bias. Our proposed framework allows for the comparison of multiple GCF models to evaluate how models introduce bias in outputs. Preliminary results indicate a trade-off between model accuracy and fairness, underscoring the need for careful consideration in the deployment of these technologies. To this end, this study bridges the gap between human mobility literature and fairness in machine learning, with potential to help urban planners and policymakers leverage GCF models for more equitable urban infrastructure development.

Some of the most challenging problems in science and engineering are being addressed by the integration of computation and science, a research ?eld known as computational science. Computational science plays a vital role in fundamental advances in biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and a host of other disciplines. This is through the coordination of computation, data management, access to instrumentation, knowledge synthesis, and the use of new devices. It has an impact on researchers and practitioners in the sciences and beyond. The sheer size of many challenges in computational science dictates the use of supercomputing, parallel and distri- ted processing, grid-based processing, advanced visualization and sophisticated algorithms. At the dawn of the 21st century the series of International Conferences on Computational Science (ICCS) was initiated with a ?rst meeting in May 2001 in San Francisco. The success of that meeting motivated the organization of the - cond meeting held in Amsterdam April 21–24, 2002, where over 500 participants pushed the research ?eld further. The International Conference on Computational Science 2003 (ICCS 2003) is the follow-up to these earlier conferences. ICCS 2003 is unique, in that it was a single event held at two di?erent sites almost opposite each other on the globe – Melbourne, Australia and St. Petersburg, Russian Federation. The conference ran on the same dates at both locations and all the presented work was published in a single set of proceedings, which you hold in your hands right now.

Code-based analyzers often find too many potentially security-related issues to address them all. Therefore, issues likely to lead to vulnerabilities should be fixed first. Such prioritization requires project-specific knowledge, such as quality requirements, security-related decisions, and design, which is not accessible to code analyzers. We present TraceSEC, an automated technique for prioritizing issues according to their security-related importance to the project. Its core concept is to incorporate available design artifacts and trace links between them, thus considering the project context that the code lacks. We reduce the problem of issue prioritization to a maximum flow problem and quantify the importance of each issue by the flow from user-defined quality aspects to the issue, i.e., quantifying its impact on project-specific security preferences. Our evaluation shows that TraceSEC effectively provides automated prioritization and can be tailored to project-specific quality goals. Its prioritization correlates stronger with manual expert prioritization than SonarQube rule severities, which are commonly used in practice. In particular, TraceSEC has a higher similarity for identifying high-priority issues. TraceSEC scales reasonably well for codebases up to 4 million lines of code, and the initial setup overhead is likely to be recouped after the first automated prioritization.

This book emerged out of international conferences organized as part of the AAAI Fall Symposia series, and the Swarmfest 2017 conference. It brings together researchers from diverse fields studying these complex systems using CAS and agent-based modeling tools and techniques. In the past, the knowledge gained in each domain has largely remained exclusive to that domain. By bringing together scholars who study these phenomena, the book takes knowledge from one domain to provide insight into others.;Most interesting phenomena in natural and social systems include constant transitions and oscillations among their various phases – wars, companies, societies, markets, and humans rarely stay in a stable, predictable state for long. Randomness, power laws, and human behavior ensure that the future is both unknown and challenging. How do events unfold? When do they take hold? Why do some initial events cause an avalanche while others do not? What characterizes these events? What are the thresholds that differentiate a sea change from a non-event?;Complex adaptive systems (CAS) have proven to be a powerful tool for exploring these and other related phenomena. The authors characterize a general CAS model as having a large number of self-similar agents that: 1) utilize one or more levels of feedback; 2) exhibit emergent properties and self-organization; and 3) produce non-linear dynamic behavior. Advances in modeling and computing technology have led not only to a deeper understanding of complex systems in many areas, but they have also raised the possibility that similar fundamental principles may be at work across these systems, even though the underlying principles may manifest themselves differently.

This book summarizes the results of Design Thinking Research carried out at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, USA and Hasso Plattner institute in Potsdam, Germany. The authors offer readers a closer look at Design Thinking with its processes of innovations and methods. The contents of the articles range from how to design ideas, methods and technologies via creativity experiments and wicked problem solutions, to creative collaboration in the real world and the connectivity of designers and engineers. But the topics go beyond this in their detailed exploration of design thinking and its use in IT systemsengineering fields and even from a management perspective. The authors show how these methods and strategies work in companies, introduce new technologies and their functions and demonstrate how Design Thinking can influence as diverse a topic area as marriage. Furthermore, we see how special design thinking use functions in solving wicked problems in complex fields. Thinking and creating innovations are basically and inherently human – so is Design Thinking. Due to this, Design Thinking is not only a factual matter or a result of special courses nor of being gifted or trained: it’s a way of dealing with our environment and improving techniques, technologies and life.

Professional knowledge management is imperative for the success of enterprises. One decisive factor for the success of knowledge management projects is the coordination of elements such as corporate culture, enterprise organization, - man resource management, as well as information and communication techn- ogy. The proper alignment and balancing of these factors are currently little understood—especially the role of information technology, which is often - garded only as an implementation tool, though it can be a catalyst by making new knowledge management solutions possible. This conference brought together representativesfrom practical and research ?elds for discussing experiences, professional applications, and visions through presentations, workshops, tutorials, and an accompanying industry exhibition. The main focus of the conference was the realization of knowledge mana- ment strategies with the aid of innovative information technology solutions, such as intelligent access to organizational memories, or integration of business processes and knowledge management. Also of interest were holistic/integrative approaches to knowledge management that deal with issues raised by the in- gration of people, organizations, and information technology.
