The microservices architectural style has been increasingly adopted in recent years due to its advantageous characteristics. While there exist design patterns for microservices that are theoretically beneficial for ensuring performance (and anti-patterns that should be avoided), they do not always lead to the expected impact. Some designs are solutions for achieving quality properties other than performance, and while they might be categorized as anti-patterns in theory, their influence on system performance can be minimal, depending on the context. Architects find it hard to reason about these trade-offs and the impact that design decisions will have on performance before implementing them. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose an approach that enables rapid evaluation of high-level architectural models by combining both static and dynamic analysis. The static analysis identifies the design anti-patterns that are known to hinder system performance and guides the architect in reasoning about these design decisions. The approach then generates source code for the system under study based on the architectural design model for a subsequent dynamic analysis to assess whether the statically detected anti-patterns do indeed have a negative effect on the performance of the analyzed system.

Towards Tolerating Soft Errors for Embedded systems

Exponential growth in the number of transistors for each chip along with increasing clock frequencies and operational voltages and decreasing load capacitance are aggravating the possibility of occurrence of soft errors in embedded systems. Transistors on current chips have components separated by only a few hundred atoms;hence, a small voltage glitch can alter the state of the transistor, thus causing soft errors in the systems. The impact will be a matter of great concern when the line widths will shrink further. These complicated linkages among the components in chips directly affect the reliability of embedded systems and cause them to be sensitive to soft errors. The common approach to address such errors is focused on post-design phases that are complex and costly to implement. However, reliability, which is a vital non-functional attribute of a system, should be validated at the design phase, particularly for critical systems. This paper proposes an efficient approach to measure and minimize the potential threats of soft errors for embedded systems in the early design phase of system-level design. A Study on Mitigating Hard Boundaries of Decision-Tree-based Uncertainty Estimates for AI Models

Outcomes of data-driven AI models cannot be assumed to be always correct. To estimate the uncertainty in these outcomes, the uncertainty wrapper framework has been proposed, which considers uncertainties related to model fit, input quality, and scope compliance. Uncertainty wrappers use a decision tree approach to cluster input quality related uncertainties, assigning inputs strictly to distinct uncertainty clusters. Hence, a slight variation in only one feature may lead to a cluster assignment with a significantly different uncertainty. Our objective is to replace this with an approach that mitigates hard decision boundaries of these assignments while preserving interpretability, runtime complexity, and prediction performance. Five approaches were selected as candidates and integrated into the uncertainty wrapper framework. For the evaluation based on the Brier score, datasets for a pedestrian detection use case were generated using the CARLA simulator and YOLOv3. All integrated approaches achieved a softening, i.e., smoothing, of uncertainty estimation. Yet, compared to decision trees, they are not so easy to interpret and have higher runtime complexity. Moreover, some components of the Brier score impaired while others improved. Most promising regarding the Brier score were random forests. In conclusion, softening hard decision tree boundaries appears to be a trade-off decision. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Mobile Ad-Hoc network is a self-configuring and multi-hop collection of mobile devices for making successful communication. The wireless and mobile communication process are encountered based on bandwidth, process control and energy conception. Energy conception is considered and dynamically changed to rely on life time of batteries and power. The life time of battery get exhausted very quickly the nodes are moved and changed rapidly across the network. This paper noticed the problem of life time of power, batteries and energy consumption problem in various routing stages. The proposed Intelligent Gen Algorithm is used to get optimal solution for ensuring high robustness, flexibility and Energy consumption factor. It presents a common framework to balance various routing requirements in MANETs dynamically. The following are the main contributions includes, i. introducing Intelligent GEN Algorithms to classify the throughout bandwidth, delay, data ratio. ii. Various routing performance are evaluated and viewed by speed, packetize and simulation time. The comparison evaluated by select routing algorithm using NS-2. The simulation results are recorded and the performance is monitored by using on demand access protocl. Integrating Testing and Operation-related Quantitative Evidences in Assurance Cases to Argue Safety of Data-Driven AI/ML Components

In the future, AI will increasingly find its way into systems that can potentially cause physical harm to humans. For such safety-critical systems, it must be demonstrated that their residual risk does not exceed what is acceptable. This includes, in particular, the AI components that are part of such systems' safety-related functions. Assurance cases are an intensively discussed option today for specifying a sound and comprehensive safety argument to demonstrate a system's safety. In previous work, it has been suggested to argue safety for AI components by structuring assurance cases based on two complementary risk acceptance criteria. One of these criteria is used to derive quantitative targets regarding the AI. The argumentation structures commonly proposed to show the achievement of such quantitative targets, however, focus on failure rates from statistical testing. Further important aspects are only considered in a qualitative manner - if at all. In contrast, this paper proposes a more holistic argumentation structure for having achieved the target, namely a structure that integrates test results with runtime aspects and the impact of scope compliance and test data quality in a quantitative manner. We elaborate different argumentation options, present the underlying mathematical considerations, and discuss resulting implications for their practical application. Using the proposed argumentation structure might not only increase the integrity of assurance cases but may also allow claims on quantitative targets that would not be justifiable otherwise. Recent advances in Deep Learning (DL) have enhanced Aging-Related Bug (ARB) prediction for mitigating software aging. However, DL-based ARB prediction models face a dual challenge: overcoming overfitting to enhance generalization and managing the high labeling costs associated with extensive data requirements. To address the first issue, we utilize the sparse and binary nature of spiking communication in Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which inherently provides brain-inspired regularization to effectively alleviate overfitting. Therefore, we propose a Spiking Convolutional Neural Network (SCNN)-based ARB prediction model along with a training framework that handles the model's spatial-temporal dynamics and non-differentiable nature. To reduce labeling costs, we introduce a Bio-inspired and Diversity-aware Active Learning framework (BiDAL), which prioritizes highly informative and diverse samples, enabling more efficient usage of the limited labeling budget. This framework incorporates bio-inspired uncertainty to enhance informativeness measurement along with using a diversity-aware selection strategy based on clustering to prevent redundant labeling. Experiments on three ARB datasets show that ARB-SCNN effectively reduces overfitting, improving generalization performance by 6.65% over other DL-based classifiers. Additionally, BiDAL boosts label efficiency for ARB-SCNN training, outperforming four state-of-the-art active learning methods by 4.77% within limited labeling budgets. © 2013 IEEE.

The operation of innovative process plants like offshore Power-to-X platforms that produces green hydrogen and derivatives poses critical risks for the environment and personnel as well as the operating company. This is due to the high system complexity, the energies and materials used and the associated high investment and maintenance costs. To keep these risks low, the occurrence of corresponding critical cases must be avoided, for which reason the personnel must be optimally assisted and enabled in their tasks during all phases of the platform life cycle. We have therefore enhanced a digital twin presenting a teleoperation platform that allows modular use of assistance systems. As a proof of concept, an alarm management system is presented.

Cloud-native architectures are often based on microservices and combine different aspects that aim to leverage the capabilities of cloud platforms for software development. Cloud-native architectural characteristics like patterns and best practices aim to design, develop, deploy, and operate such systems efficiently with minimal time and effort. However, architects and developers are faced with the challenge of applying such characteristics in a targeted manner to improve selected quality attributes. Hence, we aim to investigate relationships, or more specifically impacts, between architectural characteristics of cloud-native applications, and quality aspects. The architectural characteristics in consideration are based on our recently proposed quality model for cloud-native software architectures. To validate its elements and revise this literature-based quality model, we conducted a questionnaire-based survey among 42 software professionals. While the survey results reinforce the quality model to a fair extent, they also indicate parts requiring a revision. Thus, as an additional contribution, we present an updated version of the quality model incorporating the survey results. Practitioners will benefit from our work when designing and developing cloud-native applications in a quality-oriented way. Researchers will moreover profit from our specifically developed questionnaire-based survey tool, which allows surveying complex structures like a hierarchical quality model.

CAV Traffic Control to Mitigate the Impact of Congestion from Bottlenecks: A Linear Quadratic Regulator Approach and Microsimulation Study

This work investigates traffic control via controlled connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) using novel controllers derived from the linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) theory. CAV-platoons are modeled as moving bottlenecks impacting the surrounding traffic with their speeds as control inputs. An iterative controller algorithm based on the LQR theory is proposed along with a variant that allows for penalizing abrupt changes in platoon speeds. The controllers use the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model implemented using an extended cell transmission model (CTM), which considers the capacity drop phenomenon for a realistic representation of traffic in congestion. The impact of various parameters of the proposed controller on the control performance is analyzed. The effectiveness of the proposed traffic control algorithms is tested using a traffic control example and compared with existing proportional-integral (PI) and model predictive control (MPC) controllers from the literature. A case study using the TransModeler traffic microsimulation software is conducted to test the usability of the proposed controller as well as existing controllers in a realistic setting and derive qualitative insights. It is observed that the proposed controller works well in both settings to mitigate the impact of the jam caused by a fixed bottleneck. The computation time required by the controller is also small, making it suitable for real-time control.

Virtual trajectories for I-24 MOTION: data and tools

This article introduces a new virtual trajectory dataset derived from the I-24 MOTION INCEPTION v1.0.0 dataset to address challenges in analyzing large but noisy trajectory datasets. Building on the concept of virtual trajectories, we provide a Python implementation to generate virtual trajectories from large raw datasets that are typically challenging to process due to their size. We demonstrate the practical utility of these trajectories in assessing speed variability and travel times across different lanes within the INCEPTION dataset. The virtual trajectory dataset opens future research on traffic waves and their impact on energy. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
