The functionality realized by software in modern cars is increasing and as a result the development artifacts of automotive systems are getting more complex. The existence of traceability along these artifacts is essential, since it allows to monitor the product development from the initial requirements to the final code. However, traceability is established and maintained mostly manually, which is time-consuming and error-prone. A further crucial problem is the assurance of the validity of the trace links, that is, the linked elements are indeed related to each other. In this paper we present a semiautomatic approach to create, check, and update trace links between artifacts along an automotive development process.

Street marketing: How proximity and context drive coupon redemption

Purpose: In 2009, US coupons set a new record of 367 billion coupons distributed. Yet, while coupon distribution is on the rise, redemption rates remain below 1 percent. This paper aims to show how recognizing context variables, such as proximity, weather, part of town and financial incentives interplay to determine a coupon campaign's success. Design/methodology/approach: The paper reports an empirical study conducted in co-operation with a restaurant chain: 9.880 Subway coupons were distributed under different experimental context conditions. Redemption behavior was analyzed with the help of logistic regressions. Findings: It was found that even though proximity drives coupon redemption, city center campaigns seem to be much more sensitive to distance than suburban areas. The further away the distribution place from the restaurant, the less does the amount of monetary incentive determine the motivation to redeem. Practical implications: When designing a coupon campaign for a company, coupon distribution should not follow a "one-is-good-for-all-strategy" even for one marketer within one product category. Instead each coupon strategy should carefully consider contextual influence. Originality/value: This paper is the first to the authors' knowledge that systematically investigates the impact of context variables on coupon redemption. It focuses on context variables that electronic marketing channels will be able to easily incorporate into personalized mobile marketing campaigns. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Currently, the size and complexity of software systems, as well as critical time to market, demand new approaches from software engineering discipline for building such systems. In this context, the use of reference architectures and product line architectures is becoming a common practice. However, both of these concepts are sometimes mistakenly seen as the same thing;it is also not clearly established how they can be explored in a complementary way in order to contribute to software development. The main contribution of this paper is to make a clear differentiation between these architectures, by investigating and establishing definitions for each of them. Based on this, we also propose the use of reference architectures as a basis for product line architectures. As a result, a better understanding of both reference architectures and product line architectures, as well as an understanding of how to explore them jointly, can contribute to promoting more effective reuse in the development of software systems. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

For automotive manufacturers and tier-1 suppliers, the upcoming safety standard ISO 26262 results in new requirements for the development of embedded electronics and software. In particular, the variety of driver assistance systems that autonomously influence the driving dynamics of a vehicle may have a high risk potential and require development in accordance with the normative guidelines. But especially for those systems whose function is typically not based solely on hardware but on complex software algorithms, safety certification can be very complex or even impossible. In this paper the problems of development of vehicle systems according to ISO 26262 are described. Finally an approach for a safety-oriented reference architecture is presented that introduces adaptive software safety cages. This architecture enables application of formal verification methods. Supported by multisensor data fusion this allows to reduce safety requirements for vehicle control systems. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper describes an approach for the development of a logistics cloud as a 'vertical cloud'. In contrast to a generic or 'horizontal cloud' components of the cloud platform are custom tailored to the specific needs of the logistics application area. The NIST cloud services model serves as a basis for structuring logistics specific cloud service requirements. In the next step the domain specific model is used as a basis for the development of Logistics Mall, a domain specific cloud platform for the trading and usage of logistics IT services and logistics processes. The paper closes with an overview of the implementation status and an outlook to future work. © 2010 IEEE.

The more modelling substitutes programming the more modelling tools should become development environments. Beyond enforcing the syntactic correctness of models tools should support a methodologically guided development in which milestones are indicated and warnings are generated to inform the user about issues that are to be solved to reach these milestones. In this paper we present an approach from the embedded systems domain that is materialized by the implementation of a prototypical model development environment. It indicates model maturity levels that correspond to an underlying development method and shows in the model maturity view which elements or parts of the model do not yet reach a level and why they do not reach it.

Efficient and effective process management is considered as key success factor for competitiveness of enterprises in an increasingly complex and closely connected environment. Today, there exists a plentitude of IT-tools that support modeling, execution, monitoring, and even flexible change of processes. Though, most process management solutions offer possibilities for reusing workflow components, development of new process models is still a cost and time consuming task. Either common process knowledge is scattered among a growing amount of process models or it is divided into unspecific components, the interrelations of which are difficult to manage. This problem becomes even worse considering potential variations of workflows. In the SPOT project, we adapted the feature modeling approach in order to represent enterprise-specific process knowledge in the form of process families. Process families consist of semantically enriched process fragments and enable the composition of business processes that conform to domain-related rules and regulations. © 2010 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this paper, we describe methods and challenges regarding the conception and prototypical implementation of a business application that uses multi-touch technology in its input device. We illustrate the use of a new conception and specification approach called DESIGNi and our experiences using the new Microsoft Expression Studio, which is specifically intended to support the development of commercial multi-touch software. We focused on the redesign of an application called "Graphical Knowledge Editor" (GKE), which is used to model processes and workflows of a call center. This system was evaluated in a study that showed how the users perceived the quality of the new software. © 2010 ACM.
