Demand-orientation is of crucial importance in mobile and pervasive information services in order to ensure the delivery of the right information at the right time and at the right place. Increasing attention has been devoted to the notion of personalized services that take the situation of the user into account. The trade-off is to ensure appropriate information supply while preventing information overload. Comparing situations predicted by the system with the expectations of a user yields information about "so-far-unexpected" changes the user should be informed about. This paper describes an approach to support situation-awareness and introduces an underlying model that additionally handles information from various sources. Our approach is illustrated in a driving assistance application.

Email communication in work groups and organizations suffers from ill-composed messages. In this paper we introduce two approaches aiming to improve the overall quality of email communication by means of reflection. For this purpose, we determine, rate and classify quality problems as encountered in today's email communication. Subsequently, we derive criteria to rate the quality of email communication, both objectively as well as subjectively. The results of these ratings are then presented to the authors of email messages to encourage them to improve their email communication behaviour. Preliminary results suggest that our approach might have the potential to overcome problems of email communication caused by ill-composed messages. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Food-allergic people need comprehensible, complete, reliable, and personalized information about food products. Today, such integrated information is not available mainly because of different interests of the stakeholders in the food value chain. Within this paper we introduce an approach to providing mobile assistance for product-specific on-site advice in a supermarket. A revenue-model is discussed and finally a prototype is introduced.

This paper presents an approach for the automatic generation of shortest Distinguishing Sequences (DS) with the Uppaal model checker. The presented method is applicable to a large number of extended finite state machines and it will find an optimal result, if a DS sequence exists for the considered automaton. Our approach is situated in an integrated testing environment that is used to generate checking sequences. The generation method is based on a DS model, which is derived from the same test model that is used for generating test cover sets. The problem of generating DS is reduced to the definition of a DS model and for this reason the complexity of our approach depends mainly on the used model checking algorithm. This means, that the presented method is automatically improved, when the model checking algorithm is improved. This includes the generation of optimal DS depending on the ability of the model checker to produce optimal results. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Service-oriented computing, which offers more flexible means for application development, is gaining popularity. Service-oriented grid applications are constructed by selecting and composing appropriate services. They are one kind of promising applications in grid environments. However, the dynamism and autonomy of environments make the issues of dynamically adapting a service-oriented grid application urgent. This paper brings forward a model that supports not only monitoring applications through gathering and managing state and structure metadata of service-oriented grid applications, but also dynamic application adjustment by changing the metadata. The aim of information logistics is to reduce information overflow by utilizing the paradigm of a demand-oriented information supply. We focus on asynchronous message-based communication processes in collaborative environments. Our main task in this context is the assessment of messages with respect to the situations of the receiver. This work presents a new general approach to estimate the information value of free text messages (e-mail, fax, etc.). Our measure for information value is based upon relevance between a message and different situations as well as time- and situation-dependent utility and acceptance functions. The approach has been tested using the MeLog system implemented at fraunhofer isst. We use a scenario from the automotive industry to demonstrate its general applicability. Finally, we focus on the application potentials of our approach in cooperative environments where the efficiency of information and communication processes is of crucial importance.

software product families are rarely created right away but they emerge when a domain becomes mature enough to sustain their long-term investments. The typical pattern is to start with a small set of products to quickly enter a new market. As soon as the business proves to be successful new investments are directed to consolidating the software assets. The various products are migrated towards a flexible platform where the assets are shared and new products can be derived from. In order to create and maintain the platform, the organization needs to carry out several activities such as recovering the architectures of single products and product families, designing the reference architecture, isolating the variable parts, and generalizing software components. In this paper, we introduce a product family construction process that exploits related systems and product families, and we describe methods and tools used. We also present an approach for classifying platforms according to platform coverage and variation and describe three techniques to handle variability across single products and whole product families. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The UML Testing Profile provides support for UML based model-driven testing. This paper introduces a methodology of how to use the testing profile in order to modify and extend an existing UML design model for test issues. As a case study, a new roaming algorithm for bluetooth devices has been developed at the University of Lübeck, is modelled using UML. The usability of the UML Testing Profile will be explained by applying it to this model. © IFIP 2004.

In this paper, we introduce the information logistics concept and demonstrate its relevance for the field of wearable computing. Information logistics is an innovative technology based on the idea that the right information gets to the recipient, e.g. journalist at the right time. The objective is a need- and user-oriented information supply according to just-in-time principles. The Smart-Wear project is a first step towards a personalized, wearable information broker based on the information logistics concept. In this paper, we want to illustrate the complexity of such a project aiming to deliver "information skin-deep". We therefore present the underlying idea as well as the system architecture. We furthermore summarize the experiences and results of the customer study as user acceptance proves to be one of the major tasks of wearable computing due the impact such technologies have on the users.

Recently, the awareness of the importance of distributed software development has been growing in the software engineering community. Economic constraints, more and more outsourcing of development activities, and the increasing geographical distribution of companies come along with challenges of how to organize distributed development. In this article, we reason that a common process understanding is mandatory for successful distributed development. Integrated process planning, guidance and enactment are seen as enabling technologies for achieving a unique process view. We present an overview of the software process modeling environment SPEARMINT and the XCHIPS system for web-based process support. SPEARMINT offers extensive capabilities for multi-view modeling and analysis of software development processes. XCHIPS provides capabilities for distributed modeling and offers enactment and simulation functionalities. This article describes the integration of both approaches. The resulting environment provides planners and developers with collaborative planning and enactment support and advanced process guidance via electronic process guides (EPGs). Additionally, experience with the integrated environment is described. We describe, in particular, the usage of this integrated environment in the context of a case study for the development of a learning system. Finally, an overview of related work is given and future research directions are sketched. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
