Sustainability is a challenge for society that circular economy tries to tackle. The metaverse, as an emerging technology that incorporates digital twins and simulation in an immersive virtual environment, has not been thoroughly investigated in connection to circular economy. Thus, the purpose of this study is to summarize the potentials and barriers of the use of the metaverse for circular economy. By conducting a structured literature review, this paper categorizes the findings into dimensions that are important for both the metaverse and circular economy. A variety of potentials and barriers that cover different perspectives important for businesses aiming to comply with circular economy principles is discovered. The findings include potentials and barriers in several areas, like the access to the metaverse, connected costs, data, knowledge transfer, collaboration, innovation, product design, production planning, training of employees, and transportation. The results can be used to promote the implementation of circular economy principles.

Biometric identification allows to secure sensitive information. Since existing biometric traits, such as finger prings, voice, etc. are associated with different limitations, we exemplified the potential of blood flow sounds for biometric authentication in previous work. Therefore, we used measurements from seven different users acquired with a custom-built auscultation device to calculate the spectrograms of these signals for each cardiac cycle using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The resulting spectral images were then used for training of a convolutional neural network (CNN). In this work, we repeated the same experiment with data from twelve users by adding more data from the original seven users and data from five more users. This lead to an imbalanced dataset, where the amount of available data for the new users was much smaller, e.g., U1 had more than 900 samples per side whereas the new user U9 had less than 100 samples per side. We experienced a lower performance for the new users, i.e. their sensitivity was 18-21% lower than the overall accuracy. Thus, we examined whether the augmentation of data leads to better results. This analysis was performed using generative adversarial networks (GANs). The newly generated data was then used for training of a CNN with several different settings, revealing the potential of GAN-based data augmentation for increasing the accuracy of biometric authentication using blood flow sounds. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Despite investing heavily in data-related technology and human resources, enterprises are still struggling to derive value from data. To foster data value creation and move toward a data-driven enterprise, adequate data management and data governance practices are fundamental. To support these practices, organizations are building (meta)data management landscapes by combining different tools. Data catalogs are a central part of these landscapes as they enable an overview of available data assets and their characteristics. To deliver their highest value, data catalogs need to be integrated with existing data sources and other data management tools. However, enterprises struggle with data catalog integration because (a) not all data catalog application types foster enterprise-wide data management and data governance alike, and (b) several technical characteristics of data catalog integration remain unclear. These include the supported data sources, data catalog federation, and ways to provision data access. To tackle these challenges, this paper first develops a typology of data catalog applications in the enterprise context. Based on a review of the academic literature and an analysis of data catalog offerings, it identifies four enterprise-internal and three cross-enterprise classes of data catalog applications. Second, an in-depth analysis of 51 data catalog offerings that foster enterprise-wide metadata management examines key characteristics of the technical integration of data catalogs. © 2023, The Author(s).

Educational operating systems are crucial for facilitating learning in the digital age, as they exist at the intersection of technology and education. While their technical role is well understood, improving their educational value requires enhancing traditional approaches. This paper explores ways to enrich educational operating systems not just through technological advancement, but also by integrating pedagogical principles. In an ever-changing world, the need for an adaptive and responsive educational operating system to meet diverse student needs is crucial. Through case studies, we analyze how design, interactivity, and accessibility can transform these systems into effective and appealing learning environments. We propose a series of recommendations for the future development of educational operating systems, focusing on enhancing the learning experience and promoting student autonomy, thereby offering a fresh perspective on how technology and education can blend harmoniously and efficiently. © 2024 IEEE.

The upcoming decentralized production systems seem to be promising in Industry 4.0 assembly to handle the challenges of highly individual products. Matrix production characterized by freely linked workstations and an advanced automation level are highly flexible. That is why many efforts have already been made to explore the advantages compared to existing flow shop production systems, but also the additional challenges arising from this new paradigm. One of these challenges is the synchronization of main product and supply part flow at the individual workstations during order scheduling. This paper presents a new approach of integrating logistics support processes into the scheduling of the main product flow to consider the part supply in the decisions taken during scheduling avoiding waiting times. We compare our integrated approach with the existing decoupled scheduling approach, based on a "bicycle assembly" scenario. The results are promising particularly when part supply is a bottleneck.

Services offer companies unique opportunities to expand their portfolio with customer-oriented solutions leading to competitive advantages due to their uniqueness. Nevertheless, companies struggle with the development and successful implementation of industrial services. The main reason for this lies in a lack of suitable development approaches and procedures for industrial services, which primarily originate from product development. Rapid prototyping (RP) aims to enhance service development (SD) by considering the need for highly iterative and fast development with simultaneous involvement of partners and customers. Against that backdrop, this paper explores use-cases, frameworks, and applications of RP to contribute to restructuring industrial SD. Utilizing a systematic literature review (SLR), RP approaches in the various disciplines of engineering are collected. After extracting important features and aggregated dimensions, the authors compare their findings to meta-theoretical foundations of Service-Dominant Logic (SDL) to give an outlook on future research on adapting RP in SD. © 2024 The Authors.

Digital Twins (DTs) play a crucial role in the fourth industrial revolution. In the context of discrete material flow systems, companies under constant competitive pressure seek solutions to minimize costs and maximize performance. Simulation-based DTs can help make optimal decisions in the design, planning, and control of these systems. Such DTs are until now created and updated by domain experts producing costs and are often not considering the advances made in machine learning to improve prediction quality. Learning DTs out of data could be the solution for a broader application. A lot of work has already been done that contributes to this endeavor, yet relevant building blocks originate from different scientific areas resulting in the use of different terminology. Thus we present a holistic review of relevant work and analyze the state of the art based on a new classification scheme deriving relevant building blocks and gaps for future research.

Traditional data monetization approaches face challenges related to data protection and logistics. In response, digital data marketplaces have emerged as intermediaries simplifying data transactions. Despite the growing establishment and acceptance of digital data marketplaces, significant challenges hinder efficient data trading. As a result, few companies can derive tangible value from their data, leading to missed opportunities in understanding customers, pricing decisions, and fraud prevention. In this paper, we explore both technical and organizational challenges affecting data monetization. Moreover, we identify areas in need of further research, aiming to expand the boundaries of current knowledge by emphasizing where research is currently limited or lacking. © 2024, CC BY.

Testing complex systems is crucial for ensuring safety, especially in automated driving, where diverse data sources and variable environments pose challenges. Here, robust safety validation is critical but exhaustive n-way combinatorial testing is impractical due to the vast number of test cases. The STARS framework uses tree-based scenario classifiers to limit feature combinations in a given domain.

Single-board computers, such as Raspberry Pi, have enabled a wide variety of monitoring applications. Microcontroller development boards offer a similar functionality but at a lower cost. Still, they are not widely used, because they are supposed to be slow. This paper aims to evaluate the abilities of modern microcontrollers and compares them with those of single-board computers. For this purpose, experiments concerning power consumption and performance evaluation are conducted. The results suggest that promising low-cost microcontrollers exist, which could be applied to reduce cost and energy consumption per node or increase the number of nodes used simultaneously in one monitoring system. © 2023 ICE Publishing.
