This article looks at the sustainability of various artificial intelligence (AI) methods. In recent months, AI methods have received a great deal of public attention and the benefits for sustainability have been emphasised. However, the ecological impacts of AI methods must also be considered in this debate. This article presents an overview of various approaches to sustainability assessment and addresses issues relating to energy consumption and the associated Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculation for a concrete agricultural AI-use case.

The idea of the SPLC 2023 Industry Variability Challenges Workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers to discuss the challenges regarding variability companies are currently facing. Companies can tell the researchers what they could/should work on regarding highly variable/configurable systems, identify areas where they would like to get some help from the SPLC community, network with other companies in other domains potentially having related issues, and identify possibilities to collaborate with researchers. Researchers can learn about current challenges of companies, relate industry challenges with ongoing research, and identify possibilities to collaborate with companies. After a motivating introduction by the organizers, each company pitches their setting, especially drivers, challenges, and lessons learned with regard to dealing with variability/highly variable/configurable systems in their context. Workshop organizers document challenges live on a shared board. This is followed by open discussion guided by the workshop organizers to further extend the challenges collected on the shared board and discuss them together with all participants.

This paper presents a flexible digital twin framework tailored for the biomanufacturing of advanced therapeutic medicinal products (ATMPs), particularly focusing on chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR T cell) therapy. CAR T cell therapies face significant challenges in the management of their personalized and complex biomanufacturing processes. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel software framework for a digital twin system aimed at digitalizing, monitoring, and managing the physical production processes. The framework has a hierarchical architecture that methodically organizes production into distinct abstraction levels: processes, tasks and skills, and microservices. This layered architecture simplifies the modeling of complex biomanufacturing production and ensures that each component can be individually updated without disrupting the overall system. Furthermore, the digital twin framework integrates both manual and automated operations within a unified system, accommodating varied requirements of diverse tasks in production. The framework’s flexibility enables easier adaptation to dynamic technological advancements and allows for swift modifications in production processes, making it a sustainable and resilient digitalization infrastructure for ATMP manufacturing.

Auscultation methods enable non-invasive diagnosis of diseases, e.g. of the heart, based on heartbeat sounds. Regular, early examinations using machine learning techniques could help to detect diseases at an early stage to prevent serious health conditions and then provide optimal therapy through continuous monitoring. There is already a lot of work on human data using AI algorithms to detect patterns in signals or images. However, there is hardly no work on detecting heart murmurs with digital such as Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease. In this paper, we present a canine auscultation project that aims to provide a tool to establish a baseline of classification parameters from audio signals that could be used to monitor canine health status by analyzing deviations from this baseline. In the future, data analysis could also lead to prediction and early detection of other diseases. © 2022 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.

In the emerging information economy, data evolves as an essential asset and personal data in particular is used for data-driven business models. However, companies frequently leverage personal data without considering individuals’ data sovereignty. Therefore, we strive to strengthen individuals’ position in data ecosystems by combining concepts of data sovereignty and data economy. Our research design comprises an approach to design thinking iteratively generating, validating, and refining such concepts. As a result, we identified ten areas of tension that arise when linking data sovereignty and data economy. Subsequently, we propose initial solutions to resolve these tensions and thus contribute to knowledge about the development of fair data ecosystems benefiting both individuals’ sovereignty and companies’ access to data. © 2022 17th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, WI 2022. Ecosystems have the promising potential to respond to economic but also environmental and social challenges, such as by enabling circular thinking, establishing fair supply chains, responsible collaborations, and ensuring resilience. In this report, we summarize findings from multiple data sources in the context of the NaWerSys workshop series which was held together with the INFORMATIK conference. The results are informed by experiences collected from full-day paper sessions in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and a world café-based discussion with 15 participants from different backgrounds, including sustainability, engineering, platform governance, product service systems, and artificial intelligence. We structured the results along with four main fields of action concerning the core, the value, the design, and the management of sustainable ecosystems. By jointly elaborating on the status quo and possible research directions, the findings aim to advance our understanding and boost the concept of sustainable ecosystems. © 2024 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). It is becoming increasingly important for enterprises to generate insights into their own data and thus make business decisions based on it. A common way to generate insights is to collect the available data and use suitable analysis methods to process and prepare it so that decisions can be made faster and with more confidence. This can be computational and storage intensive and is therefore often outsourced to cloud services or a local server setup. With regards to data sovereignty, bandwidth limitations, and potentially high charges, this does not always appear to be a good solution at all costs. Therefore, we present a conceptual framework that gives enterprises a guideline for building a flexible data analytics network that is able to incorporate already existing edge device resources in the enterprise computer network. The proposed solution can automatically distribute data and code to the nodes in the network using customizable workflows. With a data management focused on content addressing, workflows can be replicated with no effort, ensuring the integrity of results and thus strengthen business decisions. Beyond Trading Data: The Hidden Influence of Public Awareness and Interest on Cryptocurrency Volatility

Since Bitcoin first appeared on the scene in 2009, cryptocurrencies have become a worldwide phenomenon as important decentralized financial assets. Their decentralized nature, however, leads to notable volatility against traditional fiat currencies, making the task of accurately forecasting the crypto-fiat exchange rate complex. This study examines the various independent factors that affect the volatility of the Bitcoin-Dollar exchange rate. To this end, we propose CoMForE, a multimodal AdaBoost-LSTM ensemble model, which not only utilizes historical trading data but also incorporates public sentiments from related tweets, public interest demonstrated by search volumes, and blockchain hash-rate data. Our developed model goes a step further by predicting fluctuations in the overall cryptocurrency value distribution, thus increasing its value for investment decision-making. We have subjected this method to extensive testing via comprehensive experiments, thereby validating the importance of multimodal combination over exclusive reliance on trading data. Further experiments show that our method significantly surpasses existing forecasting tools and methodologies, demonstrating a 19.29% improvement. This result underscores the influence of external independent factors on cryptocurrency volatility. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Cerebrovascular diseases like atherosclerosis pose a great threat to health and wellbeing of people worldwide. To enable early diagnosis and treatment of a gradually progressing occlusion of the carotid arteries, we propose the BODYTUNE system. Consisting of a custom-built auscultation device and a mobile application, it aims at enabling the monitoring of the blood flow within the carotid arteries on a regular basis at home. In this work, we present the results of a survey with 65 participants from the system target group to investigate aspects like technical affinity and experience with comparable systems. These results provide the basis on how the BODYTUNE system should be designed to be user-centered, match the users needs and address their concerns. © 2022 The Author(s), published by De Gruyter.
