In advanced scalable multiprocessor systems with multiple applications running concurrently, the optimal utilization of memory resources plays an essential role in achieving high system performance and energy efficiency. Locality of reference is one of the basis of memory management techniques. In operating systems, the memory management benefits from temporal and spatial locality when deciding which page shall be moved down the memory hierarchy to make room for a new page. However, current algorithms are oblivious to the moments when individual tasks transition to a new working set, which leads to suboptimal decisions. Furthermore, the eviction of idle pages from main memory is postponed to the last minute, which leads to system unresponsiveness and thrashing. In this context, memory locality reasoning based on the phase transition model is a central aspect to consider. We perceive that incorporating such a model in memory management algorithms provides the operating system with ways to trigger proactive page reclamation or compaction, to collect memory related statistics, and to trigger other crucial decision-making. In this paper, we present for the first time a hardware-agnostic online working set change detection algorithm for each process in a system. The working set change is detected with incomplete knowledge of a task’s memory access behavior. Our novel online algorithm perceives the occurrence of concavity in a program’s lifetime function as an outlier and heuristically attempts to classify such from the normal observations. Furthermore, we implemented and evaluated our solution in the Linux kernel. It executes with time and space complexity. Evaluations using real-world data-intensive applications show that the algorithm detects the working set change with an average accuracy of 89% and F0.5-Score of 74%, adding negligible computation overhead of 0.506% in average.

When using today's internet services and platform ecosystems, data of consumers is often harvested and shared without their consent;that is, consumers seized to be sovereigns of their own data. Due to the rapid and abundant nature of interactions in today's platform ecosystems, manual consent management is impracticable. To support development of semi-automated solutions for this problem, we investigated the use of policy definition languages as machine-readable and enforceable mechanism to re-establish data sovereignty for consumers. Based on an expert literature review, we develop a framework of the chances and challenges of leveraging policy definition languages as central building blocks for data sovereignty in platform ecosystems. © 2020, The Authors. Indoor positioning is a thriving research area, which is slowly gaining market momentum. Its applications are mostly customized, ad hoc installations;ubiquitous applications analogous to Global Navigation Satellite System for outdoors are not available because of the lack of generic platforms, widely accepted standards and interoperability protocols. In this context, the indoor positioning and indoor navigation (IPIN) competition is the only long-term, technically sound initiative to monitor the state of the art of real systems by measuring their performance in a realistic environment. Most competing systems are pedestrian-oriented and based on the use of smartphones, but several competing tracks were set up, enabling comparison of an array of technologies. The two IPIN competitions described here include only off-site tracks. In contrast with on-site tracks where competitors bring their systems on-site - which were impossible to organize during 2021 and 2022 - in off-site tracks competitors download prerecorded data from multiple sensors and process them using the EvaalAPI, a real-time, web-based emulation interface. As usual with IPIN competitions, tracks were compliant with the EvAAL framework, ensuring consistency of the measurement procedure and reliability of results. The main contribution of this work is to show a compilation of possible indoor positioning scenarios and different indoor positioning solutions to the same problem. © 2023 CCBY.

We present our paper published at the 2019 edition of the International Conference on Model Driven engineering Languages and systems (MODELS) [Pe19]. During the development of security-critical software, the system implementation must capture the security properties postulated by the architectural design. To iteratively guide the developer in discovering such compliance violations we introduce automated mappings. These mappings are created by searching for correspondences between a design-level model (Security Data Flow Diagram) and an implementation-level model (Program Model). We limit the search space by considering name similarities between model elements and code elements as well as by the use of heuristic rules for matching data-flow structures. The automated mappings support the designer in an early discovery of implementation absence, convergence, and divergence with respect to the planned software design as well as the discovery of secure data-flow compliance violations. We provide a publicly available implementation of the approach and its evaluation on five open source Java projects. © 2020 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). All rights reserved.

Schedule instability in production networks is a highly relevant topic for practitioners and academics lacking research, especially from a network perspective. This paper addresses the phenomenon schedule instability in automotive production networks by proposing a network-oriented partial car sequencing based resequencing method that integrates both, procurement and distribution related information. Based on this network-oriented approach, schedule instability stemming from short-term disruptions is reduced. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Industry 4.0 envisions Cyber-Physical Production systems (CPPSs) to foster adaptive production of mass-customizable products. Manufacturing approaches based on capabilities and skills aim to support this adaptability by encapsulating machine functions and decoupling them from specific production processes. At the 2022 IEEE conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA), a special session on capability- and skill-based manufacturing is hosted for the fourth time. However, an overview on capability- and skill based systems in factory automation and manufacturing systems is missing. This paper aims to provide such an overview and give insights to this particular field of research. We conducted a concise literature survey of papers covering the topics of capabilities and skills in manufacturing from the last ten years of the ETFA conference. We found 247 papers with a notion on capabilities and skills and identified and analyzed 34 relevant papers which met this survey’s inclusion criteria. In this paper, we provide (i) an overview of the research field, (ii) an analysis of the characteristics of capabilities and skills, and (iii) a discussion on gaps and opportunities. REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is commonly associated with Parkinson’s disease. In order to find adequate therapy for affected persons and to seek suitable early Parkinson Patterns, the investigation of this phenomenon is highly relevant. The analysis of sleep is currently done by manual analysis of polysomnography (PSG), which leads to divergent scoring results by different experts. Automated sleep stage detection can help deliver accurate, reproducible scoring results. In this paper, we evaluate different machine learning models from the PSG signals for automatic sleep stage detection. The highest accuracy of 87.57% was achieved by using the Random Forest algorithm. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common disability in childhood affecting movement, posture and muscle tone. Increasing self-efficacy can aid to foster therapy compliance in CP patients and improve their quality of daily life. Semistructured interviews (N=19) with therapists, children and adults with CP were conducted in order to gather information on how to increase self-efficacy and therapy compliance during physical exercises, and how game design of a digital therapy application can support this. Results have been evaluated in a focus group (N=6) and additional interviews (N=2). In conclusion, six categories were identified, that influence therapy compliance and self-efficacy in both digital and real world environment. Considering these when designing a digital game for CP patients may enhance the success of therapy and quality of a patient's life.

Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) is a kind of extraordinary memory which is used to search operations in routers, firewalls, network address translators, and entire content in a single clock cycle. It is a special kind of memory which is used in highly reliable network applications. These systems require high reliability since a single error may interrupt any computation which may cause total system failure. However, TCAM is facing serious reliability challenges due to soft errors. The probability of soft errors in TCAM is increasing progressively due to alpha-particle, cosmic rays, high-vitality particles, and ionizing impacts of barometrical neutron. In order to minimize the risks of soft errors in TCAM, a new idea is proposed in this paper where the search key is constructed in a tricky way and the contents of the TCAM are ordered in a sequential pattern. The proposed method provides soft error tolerance with a low data overhead. Experimental study shows how the proposed method outperforms the existing method to tolerate soft error. © 2019 IEEE.
