There are many areas where objects with very complex and sometimes interdependent features are to be classified; similarities and dissimilarities are to be evaluated. This makes a complex decision model difficult to construct effectively. This paper presents a Hierarchical Fuzzy Signatures (HFS) approach for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of quality-management system (QMS). The goal is to classify the objectives for a real-world case study. The latter was chosen because it presents a major problem for controlling the quality levels of its production lines. With the use of this fuzzy signature structure, complex decision models in the quality management field should be able to be constructed more effectively. In fact, this study provides a path for designing a tool for decision support to ensure the effectiveness of a corporate QMS.

Cardiovascular diseases are the most popular cause of death in the world recently. For postoperatives, cardiac rehabilitation is still asked to maintain at home (phase II) to improve cardiac function. However, only one third of outpatients do the exercise regularly, reflecting the difficulty for home-based healthcare: lacking of monitoring and motivation. Hence, a cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation system was proposed in this research to improve rehabilitation efficiency for better prognosis. The proposed system was built on mobile phone and receiving electrocardiograph (ECG) signal from a wireless ECG holter via Bluetooth connection. Apart from heart rate (HR) monitor, an ECG derived respiration (EDR) technique is also included to provide respiration rate (RR). Both HR and RR are the most important vital signs during exercise but only used one physiological signal recorder in this system. In clinical test, there were 15 subjects affording Bruce Task (treadmill) to simulate rehabilitation procedure. Correlation between this system and commercial product (Custo-Med) was up to 98% in HR and 81% in RR. Considering the prevention of sudden heart attack, an arrhythmia detection expert system and healthcare server at the backend were also integrated to this system for comprehensive cardio-pulmonary monitoring whenever and wherever doing the exercise.

This paper is a step forward by making real time control system design to monitor and control process variables to ensure its smooth operation and desired reliability. Liquid nitrogen level in the condenser is a core component of isotopic separation process to obtain ( 13 C), so is needed a special focus on monitoring and control. The goal of the work is to design a controller for the liquid nitrogen in the condenser of ( 13 C) isotope separation column using NI-PXI 1031 (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) from National Instruments. The designed ON-OFF controller is implemented in LabVIEW and are discussed the advantages and disadvantages.

This paper presents a vision-tracking for mobile robots, which tracks a moving target based on robot motion and stereo vision information. The proposed system controls pan and tilt actuators attached to a stereo camera, using the data from a gyroscope, robot wheel encoders, pan and tilt actuator encoders, and the stereo camera. Using this proposed system, the stereo camera always faces the moving target. The developed system calculates the angles of the pan and tilt actuators by estimating the relative position of the target with respect to the position of the robot. The developed system estimates the target position using the robot motion information and the stereo vision information. The movement of the robot is modeled as the transformation of the frame, which consists of a rotation and a translation. The developed system calculates the rotation using 3-axis gyroscope data and the translation using robot wheel encoder data. The proposed system measures the position of the target relative to the robot, combining the encoder data of pan and tilt actuators and the disparity map of the stereo vision. The inevitable mismatch of the data, which occurs from the asynchrony of the multiple sensors, is prevented by the proposed system, which compensates for the communication latency and the computation time. The experimental results show that the developed system achieves excellent tracking performance in several motion scenarios, including combinations of straights and curves and climbing of slopes.

Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of proteins is a robust and reproducible technique. It is the most widely used separation tool in proteomics. Current efforts in the field are directed at development of tools for expanding the range of proteins accessible with two-dimensional gels. Proteomics was built around the two-dimensional gel. The idea that multiple proteins can be analyzed in parallel grew from two-dimensional gel maps. Proteomics researchers needed to identify interested protein spots by examining the gel. This is time consuming, labor extensive and error prone. It is desired that the computer can analyze the proteins automatically by first detecting then quantifying the protein spots in the 2-D gel images. In our previous work, we presented a new technique for segmentation of 2-D gel images using the fuzzy c-means algorithm using the notion of fuzzy relations. In this paper, we will describe the new relational fuzzy c-means algorithm (RFCM) and use it for automatic protein spots quantification. We will also use two methods to evaluate its performance: the unsupervised evaluation method and comparison with the expert spots quantification.

The complex embedded systems used in aircraft and guided weapon systems have complex tasks and diverse I/O interfaces for controlling the interconnected slave systems. Some complex systems consist of many embedded systems which are closely cooperated each other to perform designated mission. Hardware-in-the-Loop(HWIL) simulation system of complex embedded system suppose to be implemented as a complex system, which has a complex software architecture and hardware configuration, because it needs to support real-time computation of complex embedded system models within a strictly constrained time interval and real-time I/O interfaces. With the HWIL simulation system, the users may run HWIL simulation on the various test scenarios and may implement many sorts of software in accordance with the test scenarios. Therefore, it should have the well-designed software architecture to provide convenient way for developing HWIL simulation environment and support real-time control environment. It also should support interactive simulation control and real-time data acquisition capabilities to provide simulation state control and data analysing environment. This paper suggests layered HWIL simulation control system architecture, which comprises I/O device driver, I/O library, HWIL Simulation control executive, and application, for building evaluation environment of the complex embedded system. In this architecture, real-time control mechanism using internal CPU timer is included. It, also, suggests two protocols, named Command Processing Protocol(CPP) and Multi-rate Data Acquisition Protocol(MDAP), for interactive simulation control and real-time simulation data acquisition. The proposed architecture is implemented as tasks based on the Commercial Off-The-Shelf(COTS) real-time operating system which runs on the computing processor installed on VME bus platform.

This paper presents a vision-tracking system for a mobile robot, using robot motion and stereo vision data. The mobile robot has an actuator module which pans and tilts an integrated stereo camera. The proposed system controls the actuator to maintain the line of sight of the stereo camera towards a stationary target by using the robot motion data. The robot motion data are obtained from a gyroscope and encoders of the mobile robot. The stereo vision data from the camera is used to compensate for errors in the motion measurements, and to prevent a long term error accumulation. This vision-based compensation is used only when the robot stops or moves slowly, because the long vision processing times can cause the loop time to overrun. The proposed system is experimentally evaluated while the robot moves on a trajectory.

This paper proposes an elementary pattern detection approach for viruses propagated through e-mail and address books using the non-uniform pheromone deposition mechanism of ant colony. The local temporary tabu memory has been used to learn the pattern and it can combine known information from past viruses with a type of prediction for future viruses. This is achieved through certain generated test signature of viruses associated with e-mail over landscape. A non-uniform and non-decreasing time function for pheromone deposition and evaporation ensures that subsequent ants who are close enough to a previously selected trial solution will follow the trajectory or test landscape. They are capable to examine gradually thicker deposition of pheromone over the trajectory. It is empirically shown that the proposed modified pheromone learning mechanism can be an alternative approach to detect virus pattern for e-mail messages.

To manage and monitor their networks in a proper way, network operators are often interested in identifying the applications generating the traffic traveling through their networks, and doing it as fast (i.e., from as few packets) as possible. State-of-the-art packet-based traffic classification methods are either based on the costly inspection of the payload of several packets of each flow or on basic flow statistics that do not take into account the packet content. In this paper we consider the intermediate approach of analyzing only the first few bytes of the first (or first few) packets of each flow. We propose automatic, machine-learning-based methods achieving remarkably good early classification performance on real traffic traces generated from a diverse set of applications (including several versions of P2P TV and file sharing), while requiring only limited computational and memory resources.

Dynamic optimization problems are problems in which changes occur over time. These changes could be related to the optimization objective, the problem instance, or involve problem constraints. In most cases, they are seen as an ordered sequence of sub-problems or environments, that must be solved during a certain time interval. The usual approaches tend to solve each sub-problem when a change happens, dealing always with one single environment at each time instant. In this paper, we propose a multi-environmental cooperative model for parallel metaheuristics to tackle Dynamic Optimization Problems. It consists in dealing with different environments at the same time, using different algorithms that exchange information coming from these environments. A parallel multi-swarm approach is presented for solving the Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested on a well-known set of benchmarks, and compared with other metaheuristics from the literature. Experimental results show that our multi-environmental approach outperforms conventional metaheuristics on this problem.
