We consider online learning in finite stochastic Markovian environments where in each time step a new reward function is chosen by an oblivious adversary. The goal of the learning agent is to compete with the best stationary policy in terms of the total reward received. In each time step the agent observes the current state and the reward associated with the last transition, however, the agent does not observe the rewards associated with other state-action pairs. The agent is assumed to know the transition probabilities. The state of the art result for this setting is a no-regret algorithm. In this paper we propose a new learning algorithm and, assuming that stationary policies mix uniformly fast, we show that after T time steps, the expected regret of the new algorithm is O (T2/3 (ln T)1/3), giving the first rigorously proved regret bound for the problem.

The computer-based safety-critical systems are being developed in many areas. The standards used in such areas strongly recommend the use of formal methods in order to obtain the high level degree of certification. In the area of safety-critical railway control systems, the related standards provide insufficient guidelines in order to develop the computer-based railway control systems using formal methods. In this paper, we propose a developing process for computer-based railway control systems using formal methods. For the high level certification, we propose a guideline for writing formal requirements specification of the railway systems. We also demonstrate the case study of the application of formal methods to the requirements analysis of the railway control system development lifecycle through the development of a formal requirements specification.

Precedence-constrained parallel applications are one of the most typical application model used in scientific and engineering fields. Almost all efforts, on this kind of applications, have focused on the minimization of makespan (completion time). It is only recently that much attention has been paid to energy consumption. In this paper, we address the precedence-constrained parallel applications on heterogeneous computing systems (HCSs). We propose a new bi-objective hybrid genetic algorithm that takes into account, not only makespan, but also energy consumption. This metaheuristic adopts dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to minimize energy consumption. Our study provides promising results showing the significance and potential of DVS. The experimental results from our comparative evaluation study confirm the superior performance of our approach over the other known heuristics on the two criteria energy saving and completion time.

This article presents a detailed study concerning the equilibrium analysis and the linear parameter-varying (LPV) modeling of the six degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) nonlinear model of a fin-guided, gun-launched projectile. The equilibrium manifold of the system is obtained through a minimal vector of parameters characterizing its flight envelope and a maneuverability analysis involving the attainable vertical acceleration is presented. In the following, an analytic linear parameter varying model of the airframe yaw/pitch axes is derived and several issues concerning its scope and internal structure are discussed. Finally, an application of these results on a single trajectory point is performed and the resulting linear time-invariant (LTI) model is analyzed in terms of pole/zero location and internal stability.

Improving the control of shading blinds, lights, natural ventilation, and HVAC systems while satisfying human comfort requirements can result in significant energy cost savings with time-of-day electricity pricing. Traditionally, the above-mentioned devices are controlled separately. In this paper, a novel formulation for the integrated control and the corresponding solution methodology are presented. The problem is to minimize daily energy costs of lights and HVAC systems while satisfying equipment capacities, system dynamics, and human comfort. The problem is complicated since 1) individual rooms are coupled as they compete for the HVAC with limited capacity and nonlinear characteristics, and 2) the problem is believed to be NP-hard in view that decision variables are all discrete. A solution methodology that combines Lagrangian relaxation and stochastic dynamic programming is developed within the surrogate optimization framework to obtain near-optimal strategies. These strategies are further refined to become novel control rules for easy practical implementation. Numerical simulation results show that both of the above strategies can effectively reduce the total energy cost, and that the integrated control works better than selected traditional control strategies. © 2010.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

Model based design methodology is increasingly being used in the development of software for embedded controllers for safety class applications. SCADE Suite is a set of tools that support model based design of software for embedded systems. The model validation activity in SCADE involves model simulation guided by set of test cases that are based on system requirements (Functional or blackbox) and structural coverage criteria like MC/DC (Whitebox). However, systematically devising a test case based on such criterion is not easy and often the designer is required to analyze the model to design a test sequence, which will meet the required criteria. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a technique based on model checking to automate the generation of such test cases for SCADE models. For automatic test case generation, the tool SAL-ATG was used that can generate the test cases for the models developed in SAL specification language. MCIDC coverage criterion was adopted for generating the test goals to be covered by generated test cases.

On Earth, biology, hydrology, and geology are interlinked such that certain types of life are often associated with specifi c conditions, including rock type, pressure, temperature, and chemistry. Life on Earth has established itself in diverse and extreme niches, presenting the possibility that Mars, too, may hold records of fossilized and/or extant life in diverse environments. Geologic, paleohydrologic, and climatic conditions through the evolution of Mars are similar in many respects to conditions occurring during the evolution of Earth and, as such, may point to environments on Mars with potential to have supported living systems. Here, we discuss examples of those Martian settings. Such extraterrestrial environments should be targeted by international robotic and/or manned missions to explore potential fossilized or extant life on Mars. © 2011 Geological Society of America.

This paper presents a vision tracking system to achieve high recognition performance under dynamic circumstances, using a fuzzy logic controller. The main concept of the proposed system is based on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and the opto-kinetic reflex (OKR) of the human eye. To realize the VOR concept, MEMS inertial sensors and encoders are used for robot motion detection. This concept turns the camera towards a selected target, counteracting the robot motion. Based on the OKR concept, the targeting errors are periodically compensated, using vision information. The fuzzy logic controller uses sensor data fusion to detect slip or collision occurrences. To calculate a heading angle of the camera accurately, the output of the fuzzy logic controller and the vision information from the camera are combined, using an extended Kalman filter. The proposed vision tracking system is implemented in a mobile robot and evaluated experimentally. The experimental results are obtained as the tracking and the recognition success rate using a mobile robot. The developed system achieved the excellent tracking and recognition performance during slip or collision occurrences under dynamic circumstances.
