Software engineering education has been recognized as an important challenge in computer science undergraduate programs. Instruction in such area requires not only to deliver theoretical knowledge, but also to perform practical experiences that allow students to assimilate and apply such knowledge. This paper introduces a computer-supported Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity (CODILA) that has been used to allow undergraduate students to acquire not only particular knowledge on software engineering, but also specific competencies or skills to collaborate in a distributed development team. The article also presents two experiences in which CODILA was applied. Such experiences involved students and instructors from five Latin American Universities. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate this collaborative learning activity could be appropriate to address the instructional process in other disciplines.

Segmentation of neural stem cells is the preliminary step to treat and cure several brain neural diseases. There exist a number of methods to accomplish this task. However, all of these methods suffer from some problems, such as high intensity variation sensitivity, human interaction and high computational complexity. In this paper we proposed a novel edge-detection-based neural stem cell image segmentation algorithm using the local complex phase characteristics. The proposed method is an illumination and contrast invariant measurement of edge significance. Our contributions are that, local weighting summation Gaussian kernel convolution and a new model for phase deviation weighting function are introduced into the proposed model to improve the local phase measurement. In experiments, we show that the proposed method is more accurate and reliable than three existing gradient-based edge detection algorithms and Kovesi's model for neural stem cell image segmentation.

This paper introduces a high performance vision tracking system for mobile robot using sensor data fusion. For mobile robots, it is difficult to collect continuous vision information due to robot's motion. To solve this problem, the proposed vision tracking system estimates the robot's position relative to a target and rotates the camera towards the target. This concept is derived from the human eye reflex mechanism, known as the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR), for compensating the head motion. This concept for tracking the target results in much higher performance levels, when compared with the conventional method that rotates the camera using only vision information. The proposed system do not require heavy computing loads to process image data and can track the target continuously even during vision occlusion. The robot motion information is estimated using data from accelerometer, gyroscope, and encoders. This multi-sensor data fusion is achieved using Kalman filter. The proposed vision tracking system is implemented on a two-wheeled robot. The experimental results show that the proposed system achieves excellent tracking and recognition performance in various motion scenarios, including scenarios where camera is temporarily blocked from the target.

Drivers' distraction is widely recognized as a leading cause of car accidents. To investigate the distracting effect of dual-tasks involving driving and answering mathematical equations in the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) conditions, we design five different cases: two cases involving single-tasks and three cases involving dual-tasks. We have found that there is no statistically significant change in the behavioral data among the three dual-tasks. This raises an important question - is there any detectable effect of the dual tasks on the brain waves? To answer this, we use the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to recognize the changes, if any, in the Electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics associated with such dual-tasks. Our SOM analysis based on independent components corresponding to EEG signals extracted from Frontal and Motor areas revealed that single- and dual-tasks have distinguishable signatures in the EEG signals. Specifically, each of the two single-task conditions is clustered in a distinct spatial area of the map. Two of the dual-tasks also exhibit distinct spatial clusters, while the third case although shows differences from the other two, the neurons corresponding to this case are sub-clustered reflecting the fact that different subjects may give different priorities to the tasks when confronted with two tasks simultaneously. SOM-based exploratory analysis reveals the existence of distinct EEG signatures among the distracting and non-distracting tasks, although there is no any noticeable difference in the behavioral data among these cases.

To optimize the energy consumption during transmission in a secure remote fingerprint authentication system, most approaches have considered a fixed-rate compression of WSQ(Wavelet Scalar Quantization). To balance the energy consumption and the recognition accuracy, however, we need to consider the total energy consumption during compression/encryption/transmission and the quality of the given image. In this paper, we first develop an energy-accuracy prediction model. Then, from the given image, we can evaluate the quality of it. Finally, from the user's minimum requirement of the recognition accuracy, the energy-optimized compression rate under the requirement can be derived adaptively. Based on the experimental result, we show that total energy consumption of the fixed approach can be reduced by 29%.

This paper is concerned with H_(2) and H_(infinity) filter design for discrete-time Markov jump systems. The usual assumption of mode-dependent design, where the current Markov mode is available to the filter at every instant of time is substituted by the case where that availability is subject to another Markov chain. In other words, the mode is transmitted to the filter through a network with given transmission failure probabilities. The problem is solved by modeling a system with N modes as another with 2N modes and cluster availability. We also treat the case where the transition probabilities are not exactly known and demonstrate our conditions for calculating an H_(infinity) norm bound are less conservative than the available results in the current literature. Numerical examples show the applicability of the proposed results.

Methods based on kernel density estimation have been successfully applied for various data mining tasks. Their natural interpretation together with suitable properties make them an attractive tool among others in clustering problems. In this paper, the Complete Gradient Clustering Algorithm has been used to investigate a real data set of grains. The wheat varieties, Kama, Rosa and Canadian, characterized by measurements of main grain geometric features obtained by X-ray technique, have been analyzed. The proposed algorithm is expected to be an effective tool for recognizing wheat varieties. A comparison between the clustering results obtained from this method and the classical k-means clustering algorithm shows positive practical features of the Complete Gradient Clustering Algorithm. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Heterogeneous multiple search results need to be combined and structured efficiently and generically. In this paper, we propose a new multiple search results clustering algorithm based on the Relevant Set Correlation model [1]. As the model is based on shared neighborhood information only, it allows our new technique to process the different information sources as simple oracles returning ranked lists if relevant objects. We experimented the proposed clustering framework and we show that our new multi-source scheme performs better than using each source idependently and that it is robust to the presence of noisy oracles.

Improving the control of shading blinds, lights, natural ventilation, and HVAC systems while satisfying human comfort requirements can result in significant energy cost savings with time-of-day electricity pricing. Traditionally, the above-mentioned devices are controlled separately. In this paper, a novel formulation for the integrated control and the corresponding solution methodology are presented. The problem is to minimize daily energy costs of lights and HVAC systems while satisfying equipment capacities, system dynamics, and human comfort. The problem is complicated since 1) individual rooms are coupled as they compete for the HVAC with limited capacity and nonlinear characteristics, and 2) the problem is believed to be NP-hard in view that decision variables are all discrete. A solution methodology that combines Lagrangian relaxation and stochastic dynamic programming is developed within the surrogate optimization framework to obtain near-optimal strategies. These strategies are further refined to become novel control rules for easy practical implementation. Numerical simulation results show that both of the above strategies can effectively reduce the total energy cost, and that the integrated control works better than selected traditional control strategies.

Since data sharing mechanism between the various business systems lacks of specification and standardization, information shares hardly and data exchange are inefficient, the paper proposes a data exchange platform for power enterprise based on ESB, which is based on SOA architecture, unified data exchange standards by using XML, used SOAP/HTTP(S) as the data transfer protocol between business systems and services bus and used Web Services as the business system data exchange standard interface. BEA ALSB service bus provides data exchange services for registration, release, information, routing and other functions. Practice has proved that the platform has good flexibility and scalability and can meet the business enterprise system between all kinds of complex data exchange requirements.
