Frequent mine gas incident in china fully shows there must be many undiscovered essential factors in all previous gas incident investigations. Exploring a new analysis approach is vital to prevent and control mine gas emergency. A Bayesian decision-theoretic causation analysis method was introduced to study the mine gas incident. A typical gas explosion case was explained. The interaction law of human, machine, environment, and management factors causing mine gas incident was discussed. The evolution process of the connotative factors from the uncertain state to the certain state was discovered, and the relationships between the external factors and the internal factors were revealed. © 2006 IEEE.

Integrated virtual reality with Intelligent Tutoring System, a multi-agent architecture was proposed for intelligent virtual training system (IVTS) for mine safety training. In order to make sure IVTS agent's task plans are reliable and adaptive, a Petri nets-based declarative method was applied to model the virtual training task planning knowledge, which was represented as task planning knowledge Petri nets (TP-PNets), and an algorithm was implemented to construct TP-PNets. Then, Hierarchy Colored Petri Nets (HCPN) was used to model multi-agent task planning behaviors for IVTS, and simulation and message sequence chart was used to analyze and verify the agent task planning HCPN model. ©2006 IEEE.

The article provides information on a workshop on the development of imaging systems for cancer prevention and preemption convened by the U.S. National Cancer institute (NCI) Cancer Imaging Program held in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Doctor Katherine Ferrara of the University of California discussed the function of ultrasound in breast tumor imaging. Ways to close the gap between development and application of imaging approaches were tackled in a roundtable discussion on cervix and skin cancer.

We propose a new method of speech enhancement based on auto gain control (AGC) using two channel inputs to deal with transient noises. Auto gain control is considered to be relatively ineffective for reducing noises that are superimposed on speech. Nevertheless, it offers advantages for addressing problems posed by musical noise and spectral distortion. This method combines two operations for obtaining accurate gain. One is spectral subtraction for two-channel input (2chSS);the other is self-offset of the noise with pre-whitening. This study also addresses a coherence based post-filter to reduce uncorrelated noise components among channels. The proposed method is evaluated in experiments across three noise conditions in which (i) impulsive noises, (ii) stationary car noise, and (iii) speech noise are present, respectively. Objective measures and spectrograms demonstrate marked improvements over other two-microphone based methods, but subjective preference tests reveal that the proposed method is less preferred than the equivalent of a nonprocessed signal in the case of stationary car noise (ii). The performance of the proposed method and the conventional 2chSS were even in the case of speech noise (iii). These results of subjective tests reflect some disadvantages of the AGC processing. Those drawbacks involve degradation of noise consistency in stationary noise conditions and residual noises in desired speech segments. Nevertheless, subjective tests in the case of noise (i) demonstrate that the proposed method is the most preferred among the methods compared here. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed particularly for this noise condition. © 2006 IEEE.

Following the idea to search for just one cluster at a time a prototype-based clustering algorithm named dynamic data assigning assessment (DDAA) was recently proposed. It is based on the noise clustering technique and finds single good clusters one by one and at the same time it separates the noise data. In this paper we present the basic idea and executive procedures of evolving variant of DDAA algorithm that are capable to deal with the currently entered system information. The evolving DDAA algorithm assigns every new data point to an already determined good cluster or, alternatively, to the noise cluster. It checks whether the new data collection provides a new good cluster(s) and thus, changes the data structure. The assignment could be done in hard or fuzzy sense

Constraint programming is an emergent technology that allows modeling and solving various problems in many areas such as artificial intelligence, computer programming, computer-aided design, computer graphics, and user interfaces. In this report, we recount the recent activities of research collaboration on constraint programming conducted by the authors and other researchers in France and Japan. First, we outline our joint research projects on constraint programming and then present the backgrounds, goals, and approaches of several research topics treated in the projects. Second, we describe the two Franco-Japanese Workshops on Constraint Programming (FJCP), which we held in Japan in October 2004 and in France in November 2005. We conclude with future prospects for collaboration between french and Japanese researchers in this area. © 2006 National Instiute of Informatics.

A telecontrol laboratory for controlling a nonlinear robot arm online through the Internet is presented. The implementation of the scheme encompasses three major steps. The first step is to set up an approximately linear model after analyzing the experimental data of motor tests. The robot arm is controlled with a newly proposed generalized minimum variance self-adapted control (GMVSC) algorithm in the second step. In the third step, a client Web site with indicated IP address is developed to allow robot arm control with a correct login process. The experiments demonstrate that the robot arm is modeled and telecontrolled online with different weight parameter settings in GMVSC. And more benefit, with the GMVSC, the control value and the model of robot arm will be self adapted, adjusted, and identified. It is viewed in the second square of input pulse clearly, the same responsibility in output is obtained in the control system. This work results in a useful platform for researchers to carry out cooperative studies and facilitates the educational activities through the Internet.

Automatic text summarization for dialogue style is a relatively new research area. Some key techniques are proposed in this paper, such as identifying whether or not the style of document is dialogue, identifying all of questions and their corresponding answers and linking them to form question-answer pairs. Due to the interactive nature of dialogue documents, local regions of coherence often stretch across different speakers. An approach to automatically identify those regions of local coherence is presented. Firstly, we identify all question paragraphs in a given document. Secondly, we detect the answer paragraphs of each question paragraph and exploit text segmentation to form question-answer pairs. Lastly, we extract some sentences from the generic content and the question-answer pairs to generate a complete summary. Experimental results show that our approach is high efficient and improves significantly the coherency of the summary while not compromising informativeness

The overload control system of anti-warship missiles is researched. The output-redefinition technique is used to eliminate the nonminimum phase characteristics of missile overload output. In order to improve the robustness of the control system in the whole control process, an adaptive global terminal sliding mode (TSM) control method is proposed to control the missile's modified output. With this method, the system states lie in the global TSM at the onset of the motion, hence the reaching phase is removed from the control system. The adaptive controller is applied to estimate the upper bound of the lumped uncertainty. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation example
