Smart cities have been a very active research area in the past 20 years, while continuously adapting to new technological advancements and keeping up with the times regarding sustainability and climate change. In this context, there have been numerous proposals to expand the scope of smart cities, focusing on resilience and sustainability, among other aspects, resulting in terms like smart sustainable cities. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the degree in which smart cities put people at their centre. In this work, we argue toward expanding the current smart city definition by integrating the circular economy as one of its central pillars and adopting the term smart (and) circular city. We discuss the ways a smart and circular city encompasses both sustainability and smartness in an integral manner, while also being well-positioned to foster novel business activity and models and helping to place citizens at the heart of the smart city. In this sense, we also argue that previous research in smart cities and technologies, such as those related to Industry 4.0, can serve as a cornerstone to implement circular economy activities within cities, at a scale that exceeds current activities that are based on more conventional approaches. We also outline current open challenges in this domain and research questions that still need to be addressed.

This paper presents an FPGA-based low-power acceleration of sound source localization in HARK, open-source software for robot audition. Due to the massive matrix operations, sound source localization in HARK takes substantial processing time in edge computing devices. To balance processing time and low power consumption, two functions in sound source localization that include many matrix operations are targeted and migrated on an FPGA SoC board called M-KUBOS. Compared to CPU-based computing on ARM Cortex A53, our implementation achieved a 2.0× speedup and 1.7× lower energy consumption.

The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, looked at data on 1,000 people from China who were tracked over an average period of six years. The participants were divided into two groups: those who lived in areas with high levels of air pollution and those who lived in areas with low levels of air pollution. The study analyzed data on patients with lung cancer, including their age, gender, exposure to air pollution, alcohol consumption, dust allergy, occupational hazards, genetic risk, chronic lung disease, balanced diet, obesity, smoking, passive smoking, chest pain, cough, hemoptysis, fatigue, weight loss, shortness of breath, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, nail thickening and snoring. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Empirical Risk Minimization (ERM) is fragile in scenarios with insufficient labeled samples. A vanilla extension of ERM to unlabeled samples is Entropy Minimization (EntMin), which employs the soft-labels of unlabeled samples to guide their learning. However, EntMin emphasizes prediction discriminability while neglecting prediction diversity. To alleviate this issue, in this paper, we rethink the guidance information to utilize unlabeled samples. By analyzing the learning objective of ERM, we find that the guidance information for labeled samples in a specific category is the corresponding label encoding. Inspired by this finding, we propose a Label-Encoding Risk Minimization (LERM). It first estimates the label encodings through prediction means of unlabeled samples and then aligns them with their corresponding ground-truth label encodings. As a result, the LERM ensures both prediction discriminability and diversity, and it can be integrated into existing methods as a plugin. Theoretically, we analyze the relationships between LERM and ERM as well as EntMin. Empirically, we verify the superiority of the LERM under several label insufficient scenarios. In a world of rapid technological changes and growing interest in cultural heritage, the development of innovative tools for travelers and history enthusiasts becomes incredibly important. Even in the digital age, interactive ways of exploring historical landmarks remain relevant and attractive. In this research, an AR Intelligent Real-time Method for Cultural Heritage Object Recognition has been developed. The method is implemented through a chatbot, which, when using a smartphone's camera, recognizes objects of cultural heritage and provides descriptions of these objects. The chatbot opens up new possibilities for travelers, allowing them to enjoy history and cultural heritage using intelligent tools and augmented reality. © 2023 IEEE.

microRNAs play an important role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. Recently, viral microRNAs have been discovered in several viruses, including Hepatitis B virus. This brief work explores bioinformatics tools for viral/host miRNA research and provides insights into the roles of miRNAs in HBV infection, offering an overview of this field, in order to facilitate the selection of the most suitable bioinformatics tools according to individual needs and research goals.

This paper presents an analysis of a data set to determine the factors influencing airline passenger satisfaction. The study examines various criteria such as gender, customer type, age, travel type, class, and range to assess their impact on passenger satisfaction. The dataset consists of 25 columns, including attributes like Wi-Fi availability, convenience of online booking, seat comfort, in-flight entertainment, baggage handling, and overall satisfaction. The sample is relatively balanced, with equal representation of men and women, predominantly repeat customers, and a majority flying for business purposes. Key findings include a strong correlation between departure and arrival delays, higher satisfaction among passengers in business class, and positive ratings for Wi-Fi service correlating with overall satisfaction. Correlation analysis reveals interdependencies between different attributes, such as the influence of cleanliness on seat comfort and food and beverage ratings. In addition, a neural network forecasting model is used to estimate the average ratings of passengers, although with low accuracy, which was later excluded. Finally, a decision tree algorithm is utilized to identify the most significant attributes affecting passenger satisfaction words. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

We present recent advances in the analysis of nonlinear equations with singular operators and nonlinear optimization problems with constraints given by singular mappings. The results are obtained within the framework of p-regularity theory, which has developed successfully over the last forty years. We illustrate the theory with its applications to degenerate problems in various areas of mathematics. In particular, we address the problem of describing the tangent cone to the solution set of nonlinear equations in a singular case. The structure of p-factor operators is used to propose optimality conditions and construct numerical methods for solving degenerate nonlinear equations and optimization problems. The methods presented in the paper can be considered as the first numerical approaches targeting solutions of degenerate problems, such as the Van der Pol differential equation, boundary-value problems with a small parameter, partial differential equations where Poincaré’s method of small parameter fails, nonlinear degenerate dynamical systems, and others. There are various practical applications for the theory of p-regularity, including structural engineering, composite materials, and material design. For instance, the theory can be applied to analyze the behavior of materials with irregular or complex properties. By considering higher-order derivatives, it becomes possible to model and predict the response of materials to external forces, such as stress or temperature variations. In geophysics, the p-regularity theory can be utilized to analyze and interpret complex data obtained from seismic surveys, gravity measurements, or electromagnetic surveys. The theory also finds applications in the analysis of nonlinear differential equations arising in control systems, geometric and topological analysis, biomechanics, and many other fields. The theory offers a valuable approach to analyzing and understanding nonlinear phenomena in situations where classical regularity

Climate downscaling is crucial for detailed small- scale analysis and for acquiring climate data in regions without weather stations. Operator learning has proven potential for this task. However, several challenges remain in operator learning, such as multimodal fusion, spatiotemporal fusion and input state and query adaptation. To address these challenges, we propose a Spatiotemporal Multimodal Fusion Operator with a State- Query Coupled Kernel (SMCK). This framework includes a latent space fusion encoder that encodes climate variables using position-wise multihead attention for multimodal fusion and integrates historical information to generate robust and precise representation. Additionally, we introduce a state-query coupled kernel that combines radial basis functions and discrete fourier encoding to enhance query location representation, while also adapting to the state to obtain the coupled kernel. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and provides strong support for climate downscaling and the planning of climate-related strategies.
