Issues of Implementing Neural Network Algorithms on Memristor Crossbars

Abstract: The property of the natural parallelization of matrix-vector operations inherent in memristor crossbars creates opportunities for their effective use in neural network computing. Analog calculations are faster by orders of magnitude than calculations on a central processor and on graphics accelerators. Furthermore, the energy costs of mathematical operations are significantly lower. At the same time, the low level of accuracy is characteristic of analog computing. In relation to this, studying the dependence of the neural network’s quality on the accuracy of setting its weights is relevant. The paper considers two convolutional neural networks trained on the MNIST (handwritten digits) and CIFAR_10 (airplanes, boats, cars, etc.) data sets. The first convolutional neural network consists of two convolutional layers, one subsample layer and two fully connected layers. The second one consists of four convolutional layers, two subsample layers and two fully connected layers. Calculations in convolutional and fully connected layers are performed through matrix-vector operations that are implemented on memristor crossbars. Subsampling layers imply the operation of finding the maximum value from several values. This operation can be implemented at the analog level. The process of training a neural network runs separately from data analysis. As a rule, gradient optimization methods are used at the training stage. It is advisable to perform calculations using these methods on a CPU. When setting the weights, 3–4 precision bits are required to obtain an acceptable recognition quality in the case the network is trained on MNIST, and 6–8 precision bits are required if the network is trained on CIFAR_10. © 2020, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

We consider the distributed Cholesky factorization on homogeneous nodes. Inspired by recent progress on asymptotic lower bounds on the total communication volume required to perform Cholesky factorization, we present an original data distribution, Symmetric Block Cyclic (SBC), designed to take advantage of the symmetry of the matrix. We prove that SBC reduces the overall communication volume between nodes by a factor of square root of 2 compared to the standard 2D block-cyclic distribution. SBC can easily be implemented within the paradigm of task-based runtime systems. Experiments using the Chameleon library over the StarPU runtime system demonstrate that the SBC distribution reduces the communication volume as expected, and also achieves better performance and scalability than the classical 2D block-cyclic allocation scheme in all configurations. We also propose a 2.5D variant of SBC and prove that it further improves the communication and performance benefits.

DNS caching is a function of the global name system that is essential for reducing latency of resolution requests. Feasibility, impact and remediation options of a client hijacking focusing on attack amplification based on DNS caching is evaluated. The theoretical attack scenario is described in detail, including remarks and considerations on related technologies and their possible effects. A test environment and methodology for evaluating a representative sample of DNS resolver services is defined. Test results are evaluated within the scope of the attack scenario, exploring possibilities of effective incident response in the described situation. A short overview of potential attack surface is also presented, taking samples of Hungarian financial services. © 2021 IEEE.

The interfacial nature of the electric double layer (EDL) assumes that electrode surface morphology significantly impacts the EDL properties. Since molecular-scale roughness modifies the structure of EDL, it is expected to disturb the overscreening effect and alter differential capacitance (DC). In this Letter, we present a model that describes EDL near atomically rough electrodes with account for short-range electrostatic correlations. We provide numerical and analytical solutions for the analysis of conditions for the overscreening breakdown and DC shift estimation. Our findings reveal that electrode surface structure leads to DC decrease and can both brake or enhance overscreening depending on the relation of surface roughness to electrostatic correlation length and ion size asymmetry. Drug repurposing, also known as drug repositioning, is the process of identifying novel therapeutic indications for existing drugs, offering a cost-effective and time-efficient strategy to drug discovery. In this context, we developed a network-based algorithm, named SAveRUNNER (Searching off-lAbel dRUg aNd NEtwoRk), which predicts drug-disease associations by accounting for the interaction between the drug targets and disease-associated genes in the human interactome, implementing a novel network-based similarity measure that prioritizes associations between drugs and diseases locating in the same network neighborhoods. Following its successful applications to different disorders (such as viral infections and neurological diseases), in this study, we applied SAveRUNNER on a panel of 13 types of cancers using both disease-associated genes downloaded from widely-used databases and from gene expression data.

In recent years,there are numerous studies on chaotic systems with special equilibrium curves having various shapes such as circle,butterfly,heart and *** paper describes a new 3-D chaotic dynamical system with a capsule-shaped equilibrium *** proposed chaotic system has two quadratic,two cubic and two quartic nonlinear *** is noted that the proposed chaotic system has a hidden attractor since it has an infinite number of equilibrium *** is also established that the proposed chaotic system exhibits multi-stability with two coexisting chaotic attractors for the same parameter values but differential initial states.A detailed bifurcation analysis with respect to variations in the system parameters is portrayed for the new chaotic system with capsule equilibrium *** have shown MATLAB plots to illustrate the capsule equilibrium curve,phase orbits of the new chaotic system,bifurcation diagrams and *** an engineering application,we have proposed a speech cryptosystem with a numerical algorithm,which is based on our novel 3-D chaotic system with a capsule-shaped equilibrium *** proposed speech cryptosystem follows its security evolution and implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA)*** results show that the proposed encryption system utilizes 33%of the FPGA,while the maximum clock frequency is 178.28 MHz.

Secret key generation(SKG)is an emerging technology to secure wireless communication from ***,the SKG at the physical layer is an alternate solution over traditional cryptographic methods due to wireless channels’***,the physical layer secret key generation(PHY-SKG)depends on two fundamental parameters,i.e.,coherence time and power *** coherence time for PHY-SKG is not applicable to secure wireless *** is because coherence time is for a certain period of ***,legitimate users generate the secret keys(SKs)with a shorter key length in ***,an attacker can quickly get information about the ***,the attacker can easily get valuable information from authentic ***,we considered the scheme of power allocation to enhance the secret key generation rate(SKGR)between legitimate ***,we propose an alternative method,i.e.,a power allocation,to improve the *** results show 72%higher SKGR in bits/sec by increasing power *** addition,the power transmission is based on two important parameters,i.e.,epsilon and power loss factor,as given in power transmission *** found out that a higher value of epsilon impacts power transmission and subsequently impacts the *** SKGR is approximately 40.7%greater at 250 from 50 mW at epsilon=*** value of SKGR is reduced to 18.5%at 250 mW when epsilonis ***,the transmission power is also measured against the different power loss factor values,i.e.,3.5,3,and 2.5,respectively,at epsilon=***,it is concluded that the value of epsilon and power loss factor impacts power transmission and,consequently,impacts the SKGR.

Machine learning is a key component of many applications, among which decentralized learning has attracted wide attention because of its cost-effectiveness and high efficiency. However, decentralized learning is vulnerable to various Byzantine attacks. Existing defense models face challenges in defending against complex attacks and are often constrained by strict network topologies. To address this issue, a parameter aggregation rule based on reputation evaluation (RPV) is proposed in this paper. This rule establishes a reputation model for neighboring nodes and continuously updates it based on their distance performance during each iteration. By applying the reputation model of neighboring nodes to the Beta distribution, their reliability is obtained. Based on the reliability of neighboring nodes, the set of reliable nodes for this iteration and select parameter values from them for aggregation are determined. Finally, we gradually eliminate the influence of Byzantine nodes. Our experimental results on the MNIST dataset demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is resilient to attacks from any number of Byzantine nodes and outperforms previous defense models in terms of network topology constraints, training accuracy, and computational costs.
