A novel approach to the modeling and control of a subactuated aircraft is performed based on Geometric Algebra (GA) principles. The selected platform for analysis is a quad rotorcraft. The derived model leverages objects from GA, such as the rotor, to perform rotations, replacing the need for Euler angles and quaternions. controllers, which operate exclusively on GA objects, are developed to regulate the altitude, attitude, and translation of the quad rotorcraft. Numerical examples, including way-point navigation and trajectory tracking, illustrate the feasibility of the GA approach.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) based on wear-able device has become a hot topic of research due to its wide range of applications in health-care, fitness and smart homes. However, the classification of some activities with similar sensor readings, such as standing and sitting, is usually more challenging for the design of efficient activity recognition algorithms. Considering the inconsistent performance of different classifiers, which can provide information complementary for individual classifier, we propose a novel multi-classifier fusion method based on belief functions (BFs) theory for HAR. Specifically, at first, four classifiers are trained using time-domain and frequency-domain features to obtain basic belief assignments (BBA) of activity, respectively. Then, three assessment criteria are utilized to evaluate the reliability of the classifiers and a scoring matrix is constructed. Next, the algorithm of Belief Function based the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (BF-TOPSIS) is employed to calculate the weighting coefficients for each classifier. Finally, the discounting and Dempster's rules are adopted to combine the multiple classifiers and further decision making. Several experiments were conducted to illustrate the performance of the proposed method using the UCI smartphone dataset, and the results show that the proposed method is more accurate than the state-of-art methods. © 2023 International Society of Information Fusion.

A trainable neural equalizer based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network architecture is proposed in this article to recover the channel output signal. The current widely used solution for the transmission line signal recovery is generally realized through a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) or: Feed forward equalizer (FFE) combination. The novel learning-based equalizer is suitable for highly nonlinear signal restoration, thanks to its recurrent design. The effectiveness of the LSTM equalizer (LSTME) is shown through an advance design system simulation channel signal equalization task, including a quantitative and qualitative comparison with an FFE–DFE combination. The LSTM neural network shows good equalization results compared with that of the FFE–DFE combination. The advantage of a trainable LSTME lies in its ability to learn its parameters in a flexible manner and to tackle complex scenarios without any hardware modification. This can reduce the equalizer implantation cost for variant transmission channels and bring additional portability in practical applications. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper deals with the development of an adaptive robust controller for an Unmanned Aircraft System with variable mass. The goal is to improve trajectory tracking and energy performance while the aircraft mass is gradually reducing due to payload release. To improve the trajectory tracking performance, we propose an algorithm that merges the concepts of least squares method and sliding mode observer for the estimation of the vehicle mass. The nonlinear observer estimates the linear velocities and accelerations, which are further used to obtain the vehicle mass. A robust adaptive pole placement controller based on the Attractive Ellipsoid Method uses this estimation to update the controllers gains due to the mass variation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for performing aerial transportation and deployment of payloads, we present a numerical example comparing the performance of the proposed method with respect to using Proportional Derivative controllers as well as Robust controllers. © 2021 Chinese Automatic control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

Understanding and predicting the behavior of the powered wheelchair users play an important role in developing the driver assistance systems for the intelligent wheelchair. This article presents a model of wheelchair users, from the point of view of control engineering, based on the interaction between the human hand-joystick and the lumped-parameter model of the human hand muscle system. The interaction between hand and joystick is represented by a robot arm with a four-bar closed-chain mechanism. This mechanism is operated by four musculotendon units based on Hill's muscle model. This configuration allows simulating whole motions of the joystick as well as the evolutions of muscle activities during maneuvering the powered wheelchair. The advantage of this model is the integration of the biomechanical parameters of the muscular system of the human hand, which is very useful for simulating the defects related to the degree of physical impairment of wheelchair users. To validate the proposed model, we compare the simulation outputs of the user model with the previously published experimental results in the framework of the Wheelchair Skills Test (v. 4.1). The simulation results show that the proposed model can reflect the difficulties at the biomechanical level of users in driving the wheelchair.

We study the problem of detecting an attack on a stochastic cyber-physical system. We aim to treat the problem in its most general form. We start by introducing the notion of asymptotically detectable attacks, as those attacks introducing changes to the system’s output statistics which persist asymptotically. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic detectability. This condition preserves generality as it holds under no restrictive assumption on the system and attacking scheme. To show the importance of this condition, we apply it to detect certain attacking schemes which are undetectable using simple statistics. Our necessary and sufficient condition naturally leads to an algorithm which gives a confidence level for attack detection. This paper deals with a load transportation problem using single and multiple quadrotor aerial vehicles. A control strategy for cooperative load transportation is developed by using consensus strategies for multi agent systems. To reduce the swing in the load angle, the Input Shaping technique is used. This technique shows that oscillations can be reduced in up to 60%. The stability for the strategy is based on a Lyapunov analysis. Finally, simulation results are provide to show the effectiveness of the proposed control structure and the notable reduction of the load swing angle.

This paper is concerned with the problem of distributed Kalman filtering in a network of interconnected subsystems with distributed control protocols. We consider networks, which can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous, of linear time-invariant subsystems, given in the state-space form. We propose a distributed Kalman filtering scheme for this setup. The proposed method provides, at each node, an estimation of the state parameter, only based on locally available measurements and those from the neighbor nodes. The special feature of this method is that it exploits the particular structure of the considered network to obtain an estimate using only one prediction/update step at each time step. We show that the estimate produced by the proposed method asymptotically approaches that of the centralized Kalman filter, i.e., the optimal one with global knowledge of all network parameters, and we are able to bound the convergence rate. Moreover, if the initial states of all subsystems are mutually uncorrelated, the estimates of these two schemes are identical at each time step. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).
