Our university has an open enrollment policy. This means that any person with a high school diploma can enroll in engineering or computer science. As a result entering students have a range of abilities from being excellent in math and science to struggling to understand algebra concepts. The current course, developed over the past five years has seen the overall engineering retention grow from 45% to 70%. This has been accomplished through hands-on experience, establishing a sense of community, developing an understanding of how to be successful in studying, and fostering collaboration among students through cooperative teaming events. This paper describes three major teaming events within the freshman engineering and computer science course that have contributed to fostering collaboration and helped provide an enjoyable experience within the college. Data from each event is provided which includes the students' candid feedback, what they like and dislike, and what implementations they would like to see in the future. Students discover that working as a team takes effort and that a team's result depends upon each member's efforts. Overall the teaming activities have been well received. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The ever changing engineering curriculum mandates an emphasis on interdisciplinary projects. Through interdisciplinary projects, students will be exposed to a curriculum that allows them to work in teams of multi-disciplinary members with focus geared towards integrated technologies. This effort requires collaboration of students and faculty from multiple disciplines, and provides students an opportunity to learn from several other engineering systems. In addition, these projects will also help students to learn and deal with the societal aspects of engineering. The main focus of the paper is the interdisciplinary collaboration of electrical and mechanical engineering students on a senior capstone design of an integrated technology High Altitude Balloon (HAB) system. This project involves the design of a system with a smart high altitude balloon that would reach an altitude of 100,000 feet and return safely to earth. Major challenges in this project were the efficient design of wireless communication modules, and radiation heat transfer analysis on the payload system. The electrical and computer engineering students focused on wireless communication technology, control system design, and data analysis. The mechanical engineering students focused on the design aspects of payload, balloon filling mechanism, flight path prediction based on the study of wind data, and development of a balloon tracking system. Through this experience, students have learned principles of integrated engineering technology, and nurtured their skills in cooperative learning, team work, and effective planning. This paper presents in detail the modes by which these have been achieved, results obtained and improvements planned for the next senior design team. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

engineering educators are constantly modifying course offerings and course structure to meet the necessities of our society. One of the ongoing challenges is how to modify the initial contact with students that will encourage them to continue seeking a career in engineering. This involves student recruitment and retention. Our Fundamentals of engineering and computer science (FECS) course at Wright State University has been in place for the past six years and has seen an increase in student retention from 45% to 70%. Improving this retention rate by raising the admission standards is not possible as we have an open enrollment policy set by the state. Therefore, to better understand our students and how they perceive themselves as they enter college, we have been collecting data for the past three years as they take their FECS course using a perception survey at the beginning of the course. Data collected from the perception survey is the focus of this paper. The database consists of responses from 539 students enrolled in FECS from 2003 to 2005. The course is offered each quarter and results are compared between quarters, between years, and between quarters of each year. Data collected and presented includes the student perceptions on math and science preparation, self appraisal, outside help and teaming. Conclusions are also presented from analysis of the survey data on how our initial interactions with the students could be improved. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Managing the problems that global warming is being forecast to cause is going to require the educated attention of many disciplines. One of these has to be engineering as engineers are trained in the practical application of science and technology to meet human needs. What is being presented here is how we have restructured part of our course to provide lecture content and laboratory experiences on global warming. We are fortunate to have a course that provides the framework to accomplish this, our freshman course EGR 190 Fundamentals of engineering and computer science (FECS). This course has been modified to include pre and post global warming perception surveys, an introduction to global warming using the video "An Inconvenient Truth", mini lectures on alternative energy and two lectures and labs involving solar, wind, and hydrogen fuel cells as energy sources and a writing across the curriculum assignment on global warming. The paper includes the revised structure of the lectures and labs, how the video is integrated, and the response of the students through their writing across the curriculum assignment. Details on the pre and post perception survey has been submitted as a separate paper. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper reports the results for a senior-freshman teaming event that took place during the fall quarter 2004. It describes the rational for the event, the design leadership required of the seniors, the structure of the design environment, project reports, student reactions, and the event evaluations. This is the second year that our biomedical engineering seniors have been coupled with our engineering and computer science freshmen on a joint design project. The first year results were promising enough to continue doing it the second year. The second year had improved expectations for the seniors coupled with more time to interact with the freshmen. Seniors gained valuable experience leading a design team while the freshmen gained experience teaming and interacting with upperclassmen. This event was possible as the director of the freshman engineering and computer science program was also the professor for the initial course in BME senior design. Over all this has been a win-win effort.

This fall a new approach was undertaken in our senior design course that uses tools available on the internet to gave the students means for improved communications between members within a team. Being reported on is the use of student laptop computers in the class room coupled with a number of internet resources for communication, shared documents, a free 3d CAD program, and a team structure the students bought into and work within. These changes provided the team members methods to rapidly share ideas, contribute to reports, check on each other's progress, and receive feedback from the course instructor. The individual teams were allowed to choose which communication resources they wanted to use. Their choices and reactions to them are provided. The perceptions of the student teams to this new experience are also provided in the conclusions. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

The Wright science, Technology and engineering Preparatory program was initiated in 1988 to develop the education in science for the youth in city public schools which are mostly comprised of first-generation college and economically challenged students. The participating students upon successful completion of the program requirements while in 10thgrade are awarded full-tuition scholarship to pursue a bachelor's degree of their choice at our university. These high-school seniors while in 12thgrade attend a series of workshops designed to aid students in having a smooth transition to college. After these students graduate from high-school, in the summer they also attend a mentoring program designed to prepare them as mentors and role-models. Upon completion of the mentoring program, students participate in a week long academic advantage program to hone their math skills required for the first year of college. This paper presents in detail the model implemented along with our observations and findings. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
