Historically food has been produced by using solar energy, natural fertilizer and manual labor. However, as populations have increased food products had to be increased proportionately so it has become necessary to use industrial equipment instead of manual labor and artificial fertilizer in place of manure. Thus, in modern agriculture, fuel energy has largely replaced animate energy. This has made the food delivery system one of the most energy intensive industries. It is apparent that this demand for energy will increase because the world population is expected to double by the end of the century and hence will require rapid increases in food production. This paper sets forth the energy supply and demand situation as it concerns food production. Also, considered are externalities such as climate and population. Finally, an agenda for future research in the energy-food sector is presented. © 1976.

This paper addresses the prevalent challenge of noise, particularly flicker noise, in Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) that undermines signal integrity and accuracy in high-precision applications. Investigating various noise types in MOSFETs, their origins, and their impact, introduces chopper stabilization, a technique that counteracts flicker noise by modulating the input signal to a higher frequency where flicker noise is less significant and then demodulating it back after amplification. The study details the design and implementation of a chopper amplifier, using a folded cascode amplifier architecture and mixer topology, the efficacy of which in reducing flicker noise is demonstrated through Cadence software simulations. The findings underscore a considerable reduction in flicker noise, which enhances the signal quality and the overall performance of the operational amplifier, demonstrating chopper stabilization's effectiveness in attenuating noise and improving MOSFET-based circuits' reliability and accuracy. Conclusively, this research not only advances our understanding of noise issues in MOSFETs but also presents practical solutions for noise mitigation. It paves the way for future research in optimizing chopper amplifier design and exploring advanced noise suppression methods, underlining its significance in applications such as precision measuring, instrumentation, and audio systems.

Sign language is the principal mode of communication for the vision and hearing impaired. It has allowed us to communicate with differently-abled individuals in a manner that is as expressive as a spoken language. Sign language has satisfied all the objectives of a traditional language system, like expressing emotions while also fulfilling a greater humanitarian role. Just like there are different dialects of languages spoken around the world, there also exist dialects of sign language that differ from country to country. Each of these dialects use a different symbol or method of representing the same lexicon. This work proposes a method of dynamic Indian sign language translation. that uses neural networks and image processing. The parameter utilized is minimum with good degree of predicted accuracy is the major contribution of this paper. The trained weights for the model are small enough to be efficiently ported over to a mobile phone or web browser and can be used without an active internet connection. The model is tested on the dataset with 99% accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

These studies showed the change process of salinity in the marine bay and the effect of rainfall on its process, which clearly explain its change reasons. By the survey data on the waters of Jiaozhou Bay in August, September and October 1980, by computing the statistical methods, in this paper studied was the horizontal distribution and regional variation of salinity in its surface waters. The results present that in August, September and October, its variation range in the waters was 24.67–31.48‰. The salinity in the water body was the lowest in August. In August, September and October, it increased in the water body. From August to October, the salinity in the northwestern coastal waters presented an upward trend and at the same time, the low-salinity zone appeared in the northwestern coastal waters transferred to the high-salinity zone. From August when the rainy season was strong to the end of the rainy season in October, a large amount of land surface runoff flowed into the coastal waters and was greatly reduced. In this way, the transport of fresh water from the surface runoff of coastal waters was transformed into a large amount of evaporation. Therefore, rainfall determined the changes in salinity of coastal waters. From August to October, the surface ocean currents existed in every month and brought high salinity to Jiaozhou Bay all the way. At the same time, the high salinity brought by surface ocean currents to Jiaozhou Bay presented an upward trend with the variation range of 31.16–31.48‰. The interval length of its changes in the seawater was 0.32‰, which indicated that the variation of high salinity brought by surface ocean currents to Jiaozhou Bay was stable. In September, in the estuary water area of Loushan River, it reached the lowest level, 30.68‰. Therefore, the fresh water transported by rivers resulted in its decreasing in the estuary water area of rivers. According to the research materials of the Jiaozhou Bay waters in May and October 1979, the range of pH variation, seasonal distribution, and length of range in the surface and bottom waters were studied. The surface waters and bottom waters of Jiaozhou Bay are composed of the waters of the inner side of bay mouth + bay mouth + outer side of bay mouth. The results showed that in May and October, the pH values in the surface and bottom waters with respect to seasonal changes from low to high are spring and autumn. When the pH in the surface waters was low, the pH in the bottom waters would also low and when the pH in the surface waters was high, the pH in the bottom waters would also high. In spring, there were only a few sea plants grown in the surface and bottom waters, while in autumn, there were many. Hence from spring to autumn, the growth of the sea plants changed from small amount to large amount in the surface and bottom waters of the whole waters from the inner side to the outer side of the bay mouth. According to the variation features of the pH in the surface and bottom waters, the author thought in the three areas of the surface waters, the bottom waters and the whole waters, if the pH value in one of the areas was known, the pH values in other two areas could be known;if the growth condition of sea plants in one of the areas was known, the growth condition in other two areas could be known. According to the range length of the temporal and spatial pH variation, the results could be obtained: (1) In May, the stability of the pH variation in the bottom waters was more conducive to the growth of marine organisms than in the surface waters. (2) In October, compared with the bottom waters, the pH variations in the surface waters were relatively stable, which were conducive to the growth of marine organisms. (3) In October, the stability of the pH variation in the surface waters was more conducive to the growth of marine organisms than in May. (4) In October,

We present our approach to introducing Matlab to first-year engineering students without declared majors. Matlab is a widespread tool for computation, which has experienced a significant increase in usage. Upper-level courses in particular require students to complete assignments and projects using this versatile software. However, without a separate required course offering in the first-year curriculum, students oftentimes find themselves learning Matlab once they reach advanced courses. Taking into account the various applications of Matlab for different departments and first-year students who are undecided on their majors, a separate course for Matlab may prove excessive and lack sufficient focus. We embed a sequence of six Matlab lectures in an introductory engineering design course required by all first-year engineering students. The lectures focus on introducing the fundamental data structure of a matrix, programming constructs of loops, conditionals, and functions, and basic numerical and graphical statistical analysis. The selection of topics accounts for some of the most common applications across engineering majors, drawing playful examples from image and signal processing and statistical analysis. We discuss our experiences and curriculum developments for a period of four years over which the Matlab sequence evolved. We also address some of the logistical matters of using homework assignments versus examinations.

Deep learning(DL)is one of the fastest-growing topics in materials data science,with rapidly emerging applications spanning atomistic,image-based,spectral,and textual data *** allows analysis of unstructured data and automated identification of *** recent development of large materials databases has fueled the application of DL methods in atomistic prediction in *** contrast,advances in image and spectral data have largely leveraged synthetic data enabled by high-quality forward models as well as by generative unsupervised DL *** this article,we present a high-level overview of deep learning methods followed by a detailed discussion of recent developments of deep learning in atomistic simulation,materials imaging,spectral analysis,and natural language *** each modality we discuss applications involving both theoretical and experimental data,typical modeling approaches with their strengths and limitations,and relevant publicly available software and *** conclude the review with a discussion of recent cross-cutting work related to uncertainty quantification in this field and a brief perspective on limitations,challenges,and potential growth areas for DL methods in materials science.

This paper describes the introduction of engineering design into a freshman level course using projects in toy design. Toy design was chosen because the course must motivate and educate students with limited technical backgrounds and diverse interests. Real-world, hands-on toy design projects aim at simulating a professional design environment. To familiarize students with concept generation and evaluation, on-line peer evaluations were conducted several times throughout the semester, which also encouraged students to share ideas and improve their own design concepts. To further interest students, the course was developed as a paperless studio, with everything from lecture notes to projects and evaluations performed and accessible on-line. This approach is highly portable, cost-effective, and emphasizes written communication and presentation skills. Overall, the course was a success in a number of ways: (a) since its introduction as a toy design course, it has attracted enrollment from many students with nontechnical majors who otherwise would be unable to participate in traditional engineering design courses; (b) student participation improved significantly as a result of peer evaluations; and (c) professional toy designers who reviewed student work were impressed with the quality of student projects. further improvements are underway to randomize the peer evaluation process to reduce possible student bias, increase the number of design iterations, and improve online course material.

We examine the introduction of engineering design to high school and first-year college students via real community service-learning projects (CSLP). CSLP was chosen because the goal in the course is two-fold: (1) to introduce students to basic engineering principles and (2) to provide them with the opportunity to see the application of such concepts in society. CSLP aims to simulate a design environment in which students with limited technical backgrounds and diverse interests strive to develop viable solutions to actual problems while developing professional skills through client interaction. We provide a detailed discussion on two long-term projects, with approximately 210 student participants, applied both in the high-school and first-year college setting affiliated with the Wildlife Conservation Society and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, respectively, pertaining to information technology and assistive devices. This approach has been successful in implementation and sustainability. Client satisfaction with the results has lead to the beginning implementation stages. High-school student experiences has led to an increased interest in the pursuit of higher engineering education while first-year college evaluations indicate most felt a renewed interest about their intended major. future improvements to facilitate sustainability of this program include smoothening the transition process between teams.
