The use of demand response programs brings several advantages to the power systems operators, to the consumers, as well as to the proper functioning of the whole electrical power system. The present paper proposes a methodology based on the use of five types of demand response programs (Steps, Quadratic, Constant, Linear and Elasticity). These programs corresponds to distinct approaches to model the consumer participation in demand response programs. This methodology can be used by a Virtual Power Player that aggregates and manages the small size consumers demand response for the participation in demand response programs. Distinct consumption reduction levels have been implemented in a case study composed by 218 consumers. The aggregator becomes able to discuss on the remuneration approach adequate for each reduction level and consumer type.

The energy resource management is becoming increasingly important and complex, because of the growing use of distributed generators and electric vehicles connected to the distribution network. This paper presents a platform to be used by virtual power players regarding the energy resource management in smart grids and considering day-ahead, hour-ahead, and real-time time-horizons. This method considers that the energy resources are managed by a virtual power player that establishes contracts with their owners. Two approaches are presented to the real-time scheduling, the use of direct load control demand response events, and the use of real-time pricing demand response. The model uses full AC power flow to take into account network constraints. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and a large number of distributed energy resources is used to illustrate the platform.

This paper presents a Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) applied to hour-ahead scheduling in Smart Grid (SG). The unforeseen events not considered in day-ahead scheduling, must be overcome when approaching intraday operation. This implies new constraints in hour-ahead formulation. The developed methodology aims to complement the day-ahead scheduling tools already available on the literature. The unforeseen events in the hour-ahead can include change of forecasted load demand, market prices and availability of renewable generation. The QPSO solves the problem in adequate execution time under the hour-ahead time scale. This is demonstrated using a scenario with high penetration of distributed generation and gridable vehicles. Furthermore, a comparison with GAMS is presented.

The development in power systems and the introduction of decentralized generation and Electric Vehicles (EVs), both connected to distribution networks, represents a major challenge in the planning and operation issues. This new paradigm requires a new energy resources management approach which considers not only the generation, but also the management of loads through demand response programs, energy storage units, EVs and other players in a liberalized electricity markets environment. This paper proposes a methodology to be used by Virtual Power Players (VPPs), concerning the energy resource scheduling in smart grids, considering day-ahead, hour-ahead and real-time scheduling. The case study considers a 33-bus distribution network with high penetration of distributed energy resources. The wind generation profile is based on a real Portuguese wind farm. Four scenarios are presented taking into account 0, 1, 2 and 5 periods (hours or minutes) ahead of the scheduling period in the hour-ahead and realtime scheduling. © IFAC.

The increasing and intensive integration of distributed energy resources into distribution systems requires adequate methodologies to ensure a secure operation according to the smart grid paradigm. In this context, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are an essential infrastructure. This paper presents a conceptual design of a communication and resources management scheme based on an intelligent SCADA with a decentralized, flexible, and intelligent approach, adaptive to the context (context awareness). The methodology is used to support the energy resource management considering all the involved costs, power flows, and electricity prices leading to the network reconfiguration. The methodology also addresses the definition of the information access permissions of each player to each resource. The paper includes a 33-bus network used in a case study that considers an intensive use of distributed energy resources in five distinct implemented operation contexts. © IFAC.

Electric vehicles (EV) can become integral part of a smart grid because instead of just consuming power they are capable of providing valuable services to power systems. To integrate EVs smoothly into the power systems, a multi-agents system (MAS) with hierarchical organization structure is proposed in this paper. The proposed MAS system consists of three types of agents: distribution system operator agent (DSO agent), electric vehicle fleet operator agent (EV FO agent or alternatively called virtual power plant agent) and EV agent. A DSO agent belongs to the top level of the hierarchy and its role is to manage the distribution network safely by avoiding grid congestions and using congestion prices to coordinate the energy schedule of VPPs. VPP agents belong to the middle level and their roles are to manage the charge periods of the EVs. EV agents sit in the bottom level and they represent EV owners and operate the charging behaviour of EVs. To simulate this collaborative (all agents contribute to achieving an optimized global performance) but also competitive environment (each agent will try to increase its utilities or reduce its costs), a multi-agent platform was developed to demonstrate the coordination between the interacting agents. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Nowadays the incredible grow of mobile devices market led to the need for location-aware applications. However, sometimes person location is difficult to obtain, since most of these devices only have a GPS (Global Positioning System) chip to retrieve location. In order to suppress this limitation and to provide location everywhere (even where a structured environment doesn’t exist) a wearable inertial navigation system is proposed, which is a convenient way to track people in situations where other localization systems fail. The system combines pedestrian dead reckoning with GPS, using widely available, low-cost and low-power hardware components. The system innovation is the information fusion and the use of probabilistic methods to learn persons gait behavior to correct, in real-time, the drift errors given by the sensors. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The forthcoming smart grids are comprised of integrated microgrids operating in grid-connected and isolated mode with local generation, storage and demand response (DR) programs. The proposed model is based on three successive complementary steps for power transaction in the market environment. The first step is characterized as a microgrid's internal market; the second concerns negotiations between distinct interconnected microgrids; and finally, the third refers to the actual electricity market. The proposed approach is modeled and tested using a MAS framework directed to the study of the smart grids environment, including the simulation of electricity markets. This is achieved through the integration of the proposed approach with the MASGriP (Multi-Agent Smart Grid Platform) system.

Recent changes of paradigm in power systems opened the opportunity to the active participation of new players. The small and medium players gain new opportunities while participating in demand response programs. This paper explores the optimal resources scheduling in two distinct levels. First, the network operator facing large wind power variations makes use of real time pricing to induce consumers to meet wind power variations. Then, at the consumer level, each load is managed according to the consumer preferences. The two-level resources schedule has been implemented in a real-time simulation platform, which uses hardware for consumer' loads control. The illustrative example includes a situation of large lack of wind power and focuses on a consumer with 18 loads.

The Smart Grid environment allows the integration of resources of small and medium players through the use of Demand Response programs. Despite the clear advantages for the grid, the integration of consumers must be carefully done. This paper proposes a system which simulates small and medium players. The system is essential to produce tests and studies about the active participation of small and medium players in the Smart Grid environment. When comparing to similar systems, the advantages comprise the capability to deal with three types of loads - virtual, contextual and real. It can have several loads optimization modules and it can run in real time. The use of modules and the dynamic configuration of the player results in a system which can represent different players in an easy and independent way. This paper describes the system and all its capabilities. © IFAC.
