In an idea generation meeting, the facilitator role is essential to obtain good results. The emotional context of the meeting partially determines the (un)success of the meeting, so the facilitator needs to obtain and process this information. Thus, the facilitator role is to assist the participants to reach their goals, i.e., to generate ideas with quality. In this paper is proposed an emotional aware architecture whose aim is to assist the facilitator in the process of maximizing the results of the meeting. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Nowadays there are several systems that help people with disabilities on their quotidian tasks. The visual impairment is a problem that affects several people in their tasks and movements. In this work we propose an architecture capable of processing information from the environment and suggesting actions to the user with visual impairments, to avoid a possible obstacle. This architecture intends to improve the support given to the user in their daily movements. The idea is to use speculative computation to predict the users' intentions and even to justify the reactive or proactive users' behaviors. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Electric power networks, namely distribution networks, have been suffering several changes during the last years due to changes in the power systems operation, towards the implementation of smart grids. Several approaches to the operation of the resources have been introduced, as the case of demand response, making use of the new capabilities of the smart grids. In the initial levels of the smart grids implementation reduced amounts of data are generated, namely consumption data. The methodology proposed in the present paper makes use of demand response consumers' performance evaluation methods to determine the expected consumption for a given consumer. Then, potential commercial losses are identified using monthly historic consumption data. Real consumption data is used in the case study to demonstrate the application of the proposed method.

An intensive use of dispersed energy resources is expected for future power systems, including distributed generation, especially based on renewable sources, and electric vehicles. The system operation methods and tool must be adapted to the increased complexity, especially the optimal resource scheduling problem. Therefore, the use of metaheuristics is required to obtain good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. This paper proposes two new heuristics, called naive electric vehicles charge and discharge allocation and generation tournament based on cost, developed to obtain an initial solution to be used in the energy resource scheduling methodology based on simulated annealing previously developed by the authors. The case study considers two scenarios with 1000 and 2000 electric vehicles connected in a distribution network. The proposed heuristics are compared with a deterministic approach and presenting a very small error concerning the objective function with a low execution time for the scenario with 2000 vehicles.

Develop a client-server application for amobile environment can bring many challenges because of the mobile devices limitations. So, in this paper is discussed what can be the more reliable way to exchange information between a server and an Android mobile application, since it is important for users to have an application that really works in a responsive way and preferably without any errors. In this discussion two data transfer protocols (Socket and HTTP) and three serialization data formats (XML, JSON and Protocol Buffers) were tested using some metrics to evaluate which is the most practical and fast to use. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

A new constraint acquisition method for parwise-constrained data clustering based on user-feedback is proposed. The method searches for non-redundant intra-cluster and inter-cluster query-candidates, ranks the candidates by decreasing order of interest and, finally, prompts the user the most relevant query-candidates. A comparison between using the original data representation and using a learned representation (obtained from the combination of the pairwise constraints and the original data representation) is also performed. Experimental results shown that the proposed constraint acquisition method and the data representation learning methodology lead to clustering performance improvements. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

This paper consists in the characterization of medium voltage (MV) electric power consumers based on a data clustering approach. It is intended to identify typical load profiles by selecting the best partition of a power consumption database among a pool of data partitions produced by several clustering algorithms. The best partition is selected using several cluster validity indices. These methods are intended to be used in a smart grid environment to extract useful knowledge about customers' behavior. The data-mining-based methodology presented throughout the paper consists in several steps, namely the pre-processing data phase, clustering algorithms application and the evaluation of the quality of the partitions. To validate our approach, a case study with a real database of 1.022 MV consumers was used. © 2013 IEEE.

Much attention is being given to the incorporation of constraints into data clustering, mainly expressed in the form of must-link and cannot-link constraints between pairs of domain objects. However, its inclusion in the important clustering validation process was so far disregarded. In this work, we integrate the use of constraints in clustering validation. We propose three approaches to accomplish it: produce a weighted validity score considering a traditional validity index and the constraint satisfaction ratio;learn a new distance function or feature space representation which better suits the constraints, and use it with a validation index;and a combination of the previous. Experimental results in 14 synthetic and real data sets have shown that including the information provided by the constraints increases the performance of the clustering validation process in selecting the best number of clusters.

This paper proposes two novel fuzzy fractional PID structures. The tuning of the fuzzy fractional controllers is based on the prior knowledge of fractional-order control tuning rules. The digital implementation of these controllers is also investigated. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed tuning methodology is illustrated through its application on a fractional-order plant. The simulations results show that the control system performance is better than that of conventional fractional PID control.

Following the results achieved during our previous research, which demonstrated the importance of using adequate ontology alignments during agents' communications, we have proposed a new approach for ontology alignment negotiation where, rather than selecting (and negotiating) the ontology alignment to be used, business agents will also be allowed to negotiate the alignment composition itself. With this approach, we aim to promote not only the reutilization of existent ontology alignments, but also their combination, allowing achieving more adequate or complete alignments. On the other hand, the involvement of the business agents in the ontology alignment composition process allows excluding irrelevant correspondences, leading to more adequate alignments as well as a more accurate and trustful evaluation of their performance. In this paper we present the implementation of such approach as well as some preliminary results. © 2013 ACM.
