In this paper we will describe an automatic traceability acquisition framework for existing web applications and how to take advantage of acquired provenance information about user actions on the Internet, namely resource uploading. We will show how traceability information provided by common websites can be stored in available Linked Open Data repositories, thus enhancing cross-domain trust upon resources published on the World Wide Web. A framework such as this is also submitted to evaluation on the popular WordPress web application, demonstrating how easily it can be deployed to existing web applications. Copyright 2012 ACM.

The current regulatory framework for maintenance outage scheduling in distribution systems needs revision to face the challenges of future smart grids. In the smart grid context, generation units and the system operator perform new roles with different objectives, and an efficient coordination between them becomes necessary. In this paper, the distribution system operator (DSO) of a microgrid receives the proposals for short-term (ST) planned outages from the generation and transmission side, and has to decide the final outage plans, which is mandatory for the members to follow. The framework is based on a coordination procedure between the DSO and other market players. This paper undertakes the challenge of optimization problem in a smart grid where the operator faces with uncertainty. The results show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed regulatory framework in the modified IEEE 34-bus test system. © 2012 IEEE.

The globalization of use of Distributed Generation (DG) and other distributed energy resources in recent years have strongly influenced the power systems operation changes. The growing use of new technologies such as Phasor Measurements Units (PMUs) increases the possibilities and the efficiency of power systems operation control. The use of PMUs allows more penetration of DG mainly, with technologies based on renewable resources with intermittent and unpredictable operation such a wind power. This paper introduces the Secure Operation of Sustainable Power Systems (SOSPO) project. The SOSPO project tries to respond to the question “How to ensure a secure operation of the future power system where the operating point is heavily is fluctuating?” focusing in the Supervision module architecture and in the power system operation states. The main goal of Supervision module is to determine the power system operation state based on new stability and security parameters derived from PMUs measurement and coordinate the use of automatic and manual control actions. The coordination of the control action is based not only in the static indicators but also in the performance evaluation of control actions. Based in the performance evaluation, the control allocation uses an adaptive mechanism to give more or less importance to the actions considering the existent operation context.

The non-technical loss is not a problem with trivial solution or regional character and its minimization represents the guarantee of investments in product quality and maintenance of power systems, introduced by a competitive environment after the period of privatization in the national scene. In this paper, we show how to improve the training phase of a neural network-based classifier using a recently proposed meta-heuristic technique called Charged System Search, which is based on the interactions between electrically charged particles. The experiments were carried out in the context of non-technical loss in power distribution systems in a dataset obtained from a Brazilian electrical power company, and have demonstrated the robustness of the proposed technique against with several others nature-inspired optimization techniques for training neural networks. Thus, it is possible to improve some applications on Smart Grids.

Demand response has gained increasing importance in the context of competitive electricity markets and smart grid environments. In addition to the importance that has been given to the development of business models for integrating demand response, several methods have been developed to evaluate the consumers' performance after the participation in a demand response event. The present paper uses those performance evaluation methods, namely customer baseline load calculation methods, to determine the expected consumption in each period of the consumer historic data. In the cases in which there is a certain difference between the actual consumption and the estimated consumption, the consumer is identified as a potential cause of non-technical losses. A case study demonstrates the application of the proposed method to real consumption data.

Data transformation between repositories (data migration) demands great quality of ontology alignments, and as such ambiguous correspondences must be identified and corrected beforehand. In this paper we address the analysis and systematization of the ontology alignment disambiguation process, proposing the characterization of the ontology matching scenarios through ten dimensions. The characterization of the disambiguation scenarios according to the disambiguation solutions promotes the correct automatic adoption of the disambiguation actions. In this paper we focus on identifying and adopting structural resolution of ambiguities.

This paper consists in the characterization of medium voltage (MV) electric power consumers based on a data clustering approach. It is intended to identify typical load profiles by selecting the best partition of a power consumption database among a pool of data partitions produced by several clustering algorithms. The best partition is selected using several cluster validity indices. These methods are intended to be used in a smart grid environment to extract useful knowledge about customers' behavior. The data-mining-based methodology presented throughout the paper consists in several steps, namely the pre-processing data phase, clustering algorithms application and the evaluation of the quality of the partitions. To validate our approach, a case study with a real database of 1.022 MV consumers was used.

Although ontologies are used to describe a specific domain of interest, they can grow in size exponentially, compromising their usage. Furthermore, current ontology engineering tools do not effectively support the data/information visualization and navigation described through large ontologies. To address these issues, we claim that the experience and results of navigating/browsing ontology-described data can profit from the modularization of the ontologies underlying the repositories. For that, we propose the I3OM process that facilitates ontology-oriented navigation and contextualized information retrieval by combining different ontology modularization techniques into an iterative, incremental and interactive process.

In competitive electricity markets with deep concerns for the efficiency level, demand response programs gain considerable significance. As demand response levels have decreased after the introduction of competition in the power industry, new approaches are required to take full advantage of demand response opportunities. Grid operators and utilities are taking new initiatives, recognizing the value of demand response for grid reliability and for the enhancement of organized spot markets' efficiency. This paper proposes a methodology for the selection of the consumers that participate in an event, which is the responsibility of the Portuguese transmission network operator. The proposed method is intended to be applied in the interruptibility service implemented in Portugal, in convergence with Spain, in the context of the Iberian electricity market. This method is based on the calculation of locational marginal prices (LMP) which are used to support the decision concerning the consumers to be schedule for participation. The proposed method has been computationally implemented and its application is illustrated in this paper using a 937 bus distribution network with more than 20,000 consumers.
