Energy resource scheduling is becoming increasingly important, as the use of distributed resources is intensified and of massive electric vehicle is envisaged. The present paper proposes a methodology for day-ahead energy resource scheduling for smart grids considering the intensive use of distributed generation and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). This method considers that the energy resources are managed by a Virtual Power Player (VPP) which established contracts with their owners. It takes into account these contracts, the users' requirements subjected to the VPP, and several discharge price steps. The full AC power flow calculation included in the model takes into account network constraints. The influence of the successive day requirements on the day-ahead optimal solution is discussed and considered in the proposed model. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and V2G is used to illustrate the good performance of the proposed method.

The management of intermittent energy resources by a microgrid operator (MGO) are a key aspect of future smart grids. A microgrid allows act as a single controllable entity and can operate in both grid-connected or in islanded mode. The present paper proposes a platform to be used by MGO regarding the energy resource management in smart grids and considering day-ahead and hour-ahead time-horizons. This method considers that the energy resources are managed by a MGO that establishes contracts with their client. The operator is able to manage the consumption and generation resources, also including demand response programs, obtaining profits from selling electricity to the main network. The model uses full AC power flow and the energy buying and selling from/to the main network. The case study considers the internal low voltage distribution network of a real university campus, and the projection of distributed energy resources based on the evolution scenario for the year 2050.

decision Making is one of the most important activities of the human being. Nowadays decisions imply to consider many different points of view, so decisions are commonly taken by formal or informal groups of persons. Groups exchange ideas or engage in a process of argumentation and counter-argumentation, negotiate, cooperate, collaborate or even discuss techniques and/or methodologies for problem solving. Smart Meeting Rooms (SMR) are the election spaces where groups can perform these activities in a local or distributed setting. SMR definition has evolved and in this article we present its evolution side by side with several projects that have been developed during the last decade. We also present the features and evaluation methods present in literature and we make a discussion on the open issues. © 2015 SERSC.

The energy sector restructuring process in industrialized countries had the aim of reducing electricity prices by increasing competitiveness, and facilitate the integration of distributed energy resources. However, the complexity in market players' interactions has increased, and new problems have emerged. decision support tools that facilitate the study and comprehension of these markets became extremely useful, providing players with competitive advantage. MASCEM (Multi-Agent Simulator of Competitive Electricity Markets) arises in this context, modeling and simulating real electricity markets. It is crucial to MASCEM to have the ability to simulate as many market models and player types as possible, thus enhancing the ability to recreate the electricity markets reality in its maximum possible extent. This paper presents the EPEX Spot Day-Ahead market integration in MASCEM. EPEX Spot SE's mission is to lead European markets coupling in a single unified market, thus being crucial for the study of competitive electricity markets.

In recent years the reassessment of remuneration schemes for renewable sources in several European countries has motivated the increase of wind power generation participation in electricity markets. Moreover, the continuous growth of wind power generation, as well as the evolution of wind turbines technology, suggests that wind power plants may participate in both energy and ancillary services markets with strategic behavior to improve their benefits. Thus, wind power generation with strategic behavior may have impact on market equilibrium and pricing. This paper evaluates the impact of a proportional offering strategy for wind power plants to participate in both energy and ancillary services markets. MASCEM (Multi-Agent System for Competitive Electricity Markets) is used to simulate and validate the impact of wind power plants in market equilibrium. A case study based on real and recent data for the Iberian market and its specific rules is simulated in MASCEM.

The number of dispersed energy resources is growing every day, such as the use of more distributed generators. This paper deals with energy resource scheduling model in future smart grids. The methodology can be used by virtual power players (VPPs) considering day-ahead time horizon. This method considers that energy resources are managed by a VPP which establishes contracts with their owners. The full AC power flow calculation included in the model takes into account network constraints. This paper presents an application of differential search algorithm (DSA) for solving the day-ahead scheduling. DSA method is used to minimize the operation costs for the VPP providing in satisfactory execution time. Two scenarios are presented using a 33-bus distribution network, large wind farm and several distributed energy resources to illustrate the proposed methodology. These scenarios consider a contingency on the large wind farm and different forecasts regarding load demand.

The continuous changes in electricity markets' mechanisms and operations turn this environment into a challenging domain for the participating entities. Simulation tools are increasingly being used for decision support purposes of such entities. In particular, multi-agent based simulation, which facilitates the modeling of different types of mechanisms and players, is being fruitfully applied to the study of worldwide electricity markets. An effective decision support to market players' negotiations is, however, still not properly reached due to the uncertainty that results from the increasing penetration of renewable generation and the complexity of market mechanisms themselves. In this scope, this paper proposes a novel metalearner that provides decision support to market players in their negotiations. The proposed metalearner uses as input the output of several other market negotiation strategies, which are used to create a new, enhanced response. The final result is achieved through the combination and evolution of the strategies' learning results by applying a genetic algorithm.

The liberalization of energy markets has imposed several modifications in the electricity market environment. The paradigm of monopoly market ceased to exist, and new models have been put into practice. The new models have increased the incentive on competitiveness, making market players struggle to achieve the best outcomes out of market participation. Producers aim at reaching the maximum profit on the sale of energy, while consumers try to minimize their spending on electrical energy. The proposed methodology considers the optimization of players' participation in multiple market opportunities. Reference prices that are expected in each market type at each moment are achieved through the application of neural networks. Using the forecasted prices, the proposed portfolio optimization method allocates the sale and purchase of electrical energy to different markets throughout the time, with the aim at achieving the most advantageous participation profile. A particle swarm approach is used to reduce the execution time while guaranteeing the minimum degradation of the results. Results of the swarm methodology are compared to those of a deterministic approach, using real data from the Iberian electricity market - MIBEL.

Demand Response (DR) allows consumers to participate in energy markets, thus assuming an active role. However, the need of an aggregator capable of managing these resources and making decisions accordingly with the objectives of such resources has not been fully addressed. The aggregator activities are complex, and therefore, in the need of intelligent support to accomplish reasonable solutions. This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the advantages of using DR programs in the resource rescheduling while classification and regression trees are introduced to support the aggregator in terms of scheduling and tariffs definition. Often these techniques are used to help the aggregator decide, as they also learn through training. Focus is given to the use of trees to predict and decide, the consumers' prices and reduction levels to apply, respectively. The case study has 548 distributed generators, 10 external suppliers and 20310 consumers.

Several approaches have been proposed according the concepts of smart grids and the smart home is one of them. A smart home can be defined as a system with network communication between all devices allowing the control, monitoring and remote access of the management system, progressing in a generalized way of all loads for an individual way, through individual management of loads. The paper proposes a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) management methodology to be included in the Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition House Intelligent Management (SHIM). SHIM is a simulation platform developed and implemented in the knowledge engineering and decision support research center (gecad) to support the control and management of appliances of end consumers. The main goal of the presented work is to develop a HVAC management methodology consisting in a priority system that classifies the importance of the HVAC in each instant. The priority classification depends directly on the difference between the room temperature and the user desired temperature, in order to take measures to optimize consumption during events with power consumption limitations maintaining user comfort.
