The prevalence of renewable energy on most networks has grown exponentially in recent years. This introduces previously unknown issues, such as how unpredictable output may be and the fact that it is not continuous, necessitating extra preparation for network planning. This study presents a stochastic methodology to enable the network to consider investments in new lines and any energy storage systems it sees fit. Sixteen alternative situational scenarios are produced by segmenting the study into seasonal phases, which are then broken into four circumstances (morning, peak, afternoon, and night) for each of the four seasons. However, these are divided into hourly scenarios (totaling 8760), with different states for generation, load, storage, and electric vehicles. The model is evaluated on a 180-bus network in Portugal that includes distributed generation, a substation, and a number of the distribution operator's biomass generators in addition to the distributed generation. © 2023 IEEE.

Multiagent systems promote a decentralized and distributed approach that enable the division of complex problems into smaller parts. The use of multiagent systems also enables the representation of physical entities, such as persons, pursuing their own goals in an active and proactive society. Currently developments are promoting the idea of having machine learning models in agents to enable intelligent decisions in agents-side. However, machine learning, required assess to large datasets that cannot be available locally to individual agents, demanding the sharing of data or the use of public available datasets to training models for a given agent. To address this issue, this paper proposes the use of federated learning to enable the existence of a collaborative learning model that respects the data privacy, security, and ownership and can be in compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR). This paper proposes a novel framework called Python-based framework for agent-based communities powered by federated learning (PEAK FL) that will provide all the necessary tools to build powerful federated learning solutions based on agent communities. This framework provides the users the ability to implement and test hybrid solutions (multiagent-based federated learning systems) in a simple-to-use way, removing the unnecessary boilerplates. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Smart grid is a revolutionary concept that came to renew the way the power systems are thought. However, for these systems to be possible it is necessary and recommended that the consumers have the right technology integrated in their houses, in other words, have smart homes. Although a controversial solution for daily use, the large language models (LLM) appeared near the users as an incredible solution that demonstrates the usefulness of artificial intelligence in recurring tasks. While current LLM solutions are based on direct queries from the users, the use of multi-agent systems supported by LLMs could be a major evaluation in distributed solutions. The few solutions that support multi-agent systems for LLMs, such as ChatDev and AutoGen, were developed based solely on ChatGPT LLM. This paper explores the feasibility of changing the LLM used in a configuration of two agents developed in AutoGen. The results show that the GPT models provided by OpenAI are still the best performers, however, other models can be chosen to reduce costs and still have good results.

The amount of information accessible to businesses grows as more individuals get access to the internet. This information can be used by businesses to make corporate decisions that can highly affect them. E-commerce is the result of businesses starting to export their operations to the internet as a result of taking advantage of this reality. To help a footwear e-commerce platform keep up with the current demands of the market in terms of accessibility and customer service, a chatbot was created to help on this request. To build this chatbot, datasets were created leading to Intent Classification and Named-Entity Recognition pre-trained models, utilizing Bert-Large, getting fine-tuned with those datasets. These models achieved a F1-score of 0.90 and 0.88 respectively in their tasks. The Sentiment Analysis functionality of TextBlob was also utilized to help the chatbot comprehend user’s text polarity to reply appropriately. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To address the current burdens in the healthcare of patients with vascular diseases, the Portuguese consortium of the Inno4Health project is currently developing a remote monitoring platform that aims to support the self-management of patients with vascular diseases. With the continuous remote monitoring of patients, it is intended that the platform supports both patients and health professionals. Patients will be supported through the presentation of personalized recommendations of activities to perform and health professionals will be supported in the clinical decision making through the presentation of meaningful insights. As the platform is composed by several components, including monitoring sensors, data processing modules and user applications, theressss is a need for the standardization of the data used. This work presents the implementation of a Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) specification in the remote monitoring platform to ensure the standardization of the data that will be collected and exchanged between the several components of the platform. Multiple energy systems have become increasingly interdependent in recent years. In the smart grids, energy aggregators (EAs) as intermediaries between consumers and energy markets are responsible to supply the required energy of consumers. However, fluctuations in consumption could endanger the expected cost of EAs. Therefore, EAs shall use flexible resources to diminish the unexpected variation of demand. Among various types of energy resources, battery energy storages (BESs) and combined heat and power (CHP) units are flexible alternatives to provide the required electricity and heat demand of consumers. In this work, a linear model is presented for the participation of EAs in the energy and regulation markets based on the electrical and thermal requirements of consumers. To model the impacts of stochastic consumption, the chance-constrained programming approach is used. Moreover, the McCormick relaxation is addressed to linearize the cost function of the CHP unit. The performance is evaluated via a case study and various confidence levels. Simulation results indicate that increasing the confidence level from 0.75 to 0.85 results in a 5.4% increase in EA's costs. © 2022 IEEE.

The Smart Cities concept is evolving from the project stage to the real world. Appliances become smarter and enable bidirectional communication - a huge step toward implementing demand response and empowering active consumers in the energy market. However, managing local communities with these new players is complex, and the entity behind them needs the right knowledge and tools. The authors thereby propose a methodology to manage the active consumers on DR events optimally. The study in the present paper is done from a real-time perspective. The distribution system operator detects a voltage violation and requests a load reduction to the Aggregator, the 96 active consumers, through load shifting. The proposed methodology was applied to eight scenarios, and the correct number of demand response participants for the case study was found. © 2022 IEEE.

Ever-increasing electricity prices due to inflation has become one of the main problems for manufacturing industries to deal with, mainly in a competitive market. The usage of Renewable Energy Resources (RER)s can be a great way to mitigate the energy costs of the electricity market, by not only covering the energy consumption but also turning a profit with the surplus. This paper aims to address these issues by proposing an intelligent production line scheduling system, in a flexible job shop configuration, that focuses on reducing energy costs. It considers dynamic pricing, RERs usage and surplus selling, and complex constraints applied in the production plan. To achieve these results, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed. A case study from the literature, that uses real production data, is presented which does not take into account energy selling. Results show that with the proposed GA energy costs can be further reduced by 24.6% when considering RERs surplus selling.

This research explores the emerging market of second-life batteries and their potential, focusing on business models, challenges, and opportunities. The study was performed through a comprehensive literature review of existing business models for battery reuse, as well as an analysis of the challenges, uncertainties, and opportunities in the battery reuse market. The main findings of this research include the proposal of a hybrid business model for battery reuse, which combines elements of ownership, service-based models, and partnerships between various stakeholders in the battery reuse ecosystem. The study emphasizes the potential implications of the proposed business model, including its contribution to the circular economy, reduction of waste and reliance on raw materials, and support for the transition to a low-carbon economy. The research also highlights the need for comprehensive policies and regulations to address battery collection, testing, refurbishment, and financial incentives for businesses and individuals participating in battery reuse program.
