The ability to adjust itself to users' profile is imperative in modern system, given that many people interact with a lot of information in different ways. The creation of adaptive systems is a complex domain that requires very specific methods and the integration of several intelligent techniques, from an intelligent systems development perspective. Designing an adaptive system requires planning and training of user modelling techniques combined with existing system components. Based on the architecture for user modelling on Intelligent and Adaptive Scheduling Systems, this paper presents an analysis of using the mentioned architecture to characterize user's behaviours and a case study comparing the employment of different user classifiers. Bayesian and Artificial Neural Networks were selected as the elements of the computational study and this paper presents a description on how to prepare them to deal with user information.

Smart Grid (SG) concept is defined as an electricity network operated intelligently to integrate the behavior and actions of all energy resources connected to the network to ensure efficient, sustainable, economic and secure supply of electricity. This concept emerged in recent decades not only for economic reasons but also ecological and even political. SG have been the subject of major studies and investments and continues to represent an area of enormous challenges. Some of the problems of intelligent systems connected to the managed SG are: the real-time processing optimization algorithms and demand response programs; and more accurate predictions in the management of production and consumption. This paper presents a case study for evaluating the performance and accuracy of energy consumption forecast with use of SVM (support Vector Machines) in different frameworks.

The recent changes on the electrical power systems make the role of distributed generation more important. Employing distributed generation in demand side allows the consumers to have active participation in the electricity markets. This paper implements the real-time simulation of a local microgrid that consists of two subsystems: home area network and neighborhood area network. In this system, the home area network is the electrical grid of a house and the neighborhood area network is the low voltage electrical distribution grid of the neighborhood. The main contribution of this paper is to assess scenarios for energy transactions between these two areas using real resources. In the case studies, several real profiles have been employed for simulating the consumption and generation of this local microgrid.

Decentralising the power systems management brings clear advantages for the grid and for the stakeholders (consumers, generators, operational and management actors). The grid decentralisation can be achieved using microgrids. Some microgrids emerge worldwide, working as small energy islands. It is admitted that ontologies and open (Semantic) Web standards can form a basis for advanced communication architectures in smart grids. True, ontologies enable semantic interoperability and logical reasoning; the Linked Data principles enable the discovery of new information on the web. This paper reports on the use of these formalisms and principles to develop a new information system for a microgrid site already in place. More specifically, we developed a new ontology to represent time series of multiple observations, and made real-time consumption data available on the web as Linked Data. This enables consumption reporting, and enables other researchers to test their algorithms against real-time consumption data.

This paper addresses the ability of Burg algorithm to predict the ECG signal when it was completely destroyed by motion artefacts. The application focus of this study is portable devices used in telemedicine and healthcare, where the daily activity of patients produces several contact losses and movements of electrodes on the skin. The paper starts with a short analysis of noise sources that affects the ECG signal, followed by the algorithm implementation and the results. The obtained results show that Burg algorithm is a very promising technique to predict the ECG signal for at least three sequential heart beats. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In order to suppress the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) limitation to track persons in indoor or in dense environments, a pedestrian inertial navigation system can be used. However, this type of systems have huge location estimation errors due to the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) characteristics and the use of low-cost inertial sensors. To suppress some of these errors we propose a system that uses several sensors spread in person's body combined with information fusion techniques. Information fusion techniques provide lighter algorithms implementations, to count and classify the type of step, to run in mobile devices. Thus, improving pedestrian inertial navigation systems accuracy. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Equivalent circuit field-effect transistor models (compact models) are extensively used in integrated circuit design and manufacture. The most commonly used models are not derived from basic physical fundamentals, but are rather determined by parameter extraction techniques from experiment. This requires that the device be fabricated and characterized before the model can be determined. An alternate approach is to derive the model from fundamental physics, which permits the model to be used in device design as well as circuit applications. In this work a zone-based approach to physics-based compact model development is described. The approach starts from fundamental physical principles and produces a model that accurately describes the dc and RF performance of the device. The zone-based approach divides the device into zones based upon operational physical phenomena. The various zones are described with a simplified set of equations, and the zones are then linked to form the complete model. The physics-based approach produces a compact model that can easily be formulated to include all pertinent physical phenomena known to affect device performance. The zone-based approach yields a flexible device model that is both quantitatively accurate and easy to employ in system level simulators.

In this paper, we describe how a learning platform that takes into account the student's learning preferences, the personality and emotions could prompt better learning results. This model will assess the emotional state of the student in an online learning environment by introducing techniques of Affective Computing that can capture the student emotional state and based on that, adapt the course to the characteristics and needs of the student in order to get an improvement in the learning results. Students, as individuals, differ in their social, intellectual, physical, psychological, emotional, and ethnic characteristics. Also, differ in their learning rates, objectives and motivation turning, their behaviour rather unpredictable. Added to emotion, and in order to obtain an effective model for online learning, student's personality and learning style are also considered. The architecture developed was tested by a group of students of higher education in Oporto. The results indicated that the model created used can support and improve the student's results, verifying that a negative emotional state could influence the learning process. © 2015 ACM.

The purpose of this paper is to propose new model for emotional interaction that uses learning styles and student emotional state to adapt the user interface and learning path. This aims to reduce the difficulty and emotional stain that students encounter while interacting with learning platforms. To this end will be used techniques of Affective Computer that can capture the student emotional state and base on that change the course parameters (flow, organization or difficulty) or even an emotional interaction in order to recapture the student attention. © 2015 AISTI.

Demand response can to be used in order to reduce energy consumption or, in an economic standpoint, to avoid the need of more expensive energy resources. The present paper proposes a methodology that makes possible to compare the modeling of distinct demand response programs by having different consumer remuneration approaches. The methodology, which is developed in the scope of a Virtual Power Players operation of a network, concerning its consumption reduction needs and the schedule of demand resources according to its price. The consumers are modeled as several approaches, namely, Constant, Elasticity, Linear, Quadratic and Steps. Several consumption reduction levels and economic evaluation scenarios have been implemented in a case study composed by 218 consumers and 4 suppliers from the main upstream network.
