This article investigates the use of fuzzy algorithms for fractional PID control systems. The tuning of the fuzzy controllers is based on the prior knowledge of integer or fractional-order control strategy. The suggested fuzzy controllers are fine tuned using a genetic algorithm (GA). The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methodology is illustrated through its application on the control of a fractional-order plant. The simulation results show the better performance of nonlinear fuzzy algorithms of fractional-order. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Economic development brings the current scenario closer to the depletion of natural resources. Directly related to this it’s the energy consumption and the need to seek sustainable solutions to prevent the harmful consequences of this depletion. Solar energy harnessed through photovoltaic technology is a solution capable of reducing the environmental impact, as it is a resource that is less harmful to the environment. The energy demand is seen as rising worldwide, and strategies must be developed to improve energy efficiency and maintain the balance of the electrical network, considering the comfort of consumers and the minimization of polluting emissions. In this sense, the concept of Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) aims to reduce electricity bills, maintain the efficiency of electronic equipment, and Demand Response, which seeks to change the use of electricity by consumers. Thus, the present study aims to search the literature for different HEMS models, specifically battery scheduling, for the future application of a model for a case study in the laboratory gecad - research group on Intelligent engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development.

Over the last decades Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are increasingly being used in sports, especially in football, aiming to improve the athletes training and results. However, training systems for young athletes do not have, for the most part, learning abilities in order to adapt, evolve and find new training recommendations, designed specifically for each young athlete. In this paper introduce the Smart Coach user adaptation model, and whose main goal is to present our hybrid recommendation system to help young athletes evolve. This facilitate the interaction between members of a club technical staff and their young athletes, reinforcing the young person counselling, and their potential as an athlete. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

One of the sustainability goals in Europe is to reduce GHG emissions and energy consumption in buildings by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Renovation targets include a 16% reduction in primary energy use by 2030 in residential buildings and renovating 16% of least efficient buildings in the non-residential sector. Performance indicators in smart buildings are crucial for evaluating system performance objectively, aiding decision-making, and ensuring accountability. They provide insights into energy consumption, indoor air quality, and resource usage, facilitating cost reduction and enhancing user experience. These indicators also support compliance with regulations, certification standards, and sustainability goals. This work, under the umbrella of the DigiBUILD project, applies multi-dimension key performance indicators across ten European pilots to make better-informed decisions, improve data quality, and support policy-making for sustainable building infrastructure.

We forecast a future in which the global economy and the Internet will host a large number of interacting software agents. Most of them will be economically motivated, and will negotiate a variety of goods and services. It is therefore important to consider the economic incentives and behaviours of economic software agents, and to use all available means to anticipate their collective interactions. This paper addresses this concern by presenting a multi-agent market simulator designed for analysing agent market strategies based on a complete understanding of buyer and seller behaviours, preference models and pricing algorithms. The results of the negotiations between agents will be analysed by data mining tools in order to extract rules that will give the agents feedback to improve their strategies.

Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease and patients do not always manage the disease properly. Therefore, creating tools that help diabetics self-manage their condition over time is of the utmost importance. Technological tools that include features meeting this population's needs, with an integrated personalized feedback system, in an environment of gamified incentives, may be the way for developing a sustained app's usage. This work aims to present a still in development, novel approach to managing diabetes type 2 with a focus on data analysis from user-inputs, gamification, and personalized coaching, with an accessible user interface. Thus, we will present some functionalities, in particular the theoretical and practical concept that is behind this development, namely the Transtheoretical model of behavior change to create different profiles, to provide customized feedback according to the user's behavioral stage, and also to ascertain if it induces any improvement at the behavioral level.

Current tools for self-management of chronic obstructive respiratory diseases (CORD) are difficult to use, not individualized and requiring laborious analysis by health professionals, discouraging their use in healthcare. There is an opportunity for cost-effective and easy-to-disseminate advanced technological solutions directed to patients and attractive to different stakeholders. The strategy of AIRDOC is to develop and integrate self-monitoring and self-managing tools, making use of the smartphone's presence in everyday life. AIRDOC intends to innovate on: i) technologies for remote monitoring of respiratory function and computerized lung auscultation;ii) coaching solutions, integrating psychoeducation, gamification and disease management support systems;and iii) management of personal health data, focusing on security, privacy and interoperability. This paper presents a simulation model for local markets with the perspective of a licensed municipal entity describing the guidelines for agent interaction. The licensed municipal entity is a strategic agent for the operation of a local energy market along the lines of the proposed business model. MASCEM tool is the basis for the analysis. The work to improve MASCEM proposes an architecture for the study of local energy markets that face the participating agents as the cyber-physical systems beyond them, considering the need of secure interactions and trusted negotiations. Two scenarios case - study are carried out to highlight different approaches from the licensed municipal entity. The first approach describes a liberalized position of the entity so that agents in the local market can interact more objectively with the wholesale market. In the second approach, the interaction with the wholesale energy market is restricted to the licensed municipal entity.

This paper describes a two-month summer intensive course designed to introduce participants with a hands-on technical craft on robotics and to acquire experience in the low-level details of embedded systems. Attendants started this course with a brief introduction to robotics;learned to draw, design and create a personalized 3D structure for their mobile robotic platform and developed skills in embedded systems. They were familiarize with the practices used in robotics, learning to connect all sensors and actuator, developing a typical application on differential kinematic using Arduino, exploring ROS features under Raspberry Pi environment and Arduino – Raspberry Pi communication. Different paradigms and some real applications and programming were addressed on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout the course, participants were introduced to programming languages (including Python and C++), advanced programming concepts such as ROS, basic API development, system concepts such as I2C and UART serial interfaces, PWM motor control and sensor fusion to improve robotic navigation and localization. This paper describes not just the concept, layout and methodology used on RobotCraft 2017 but also presents the participants knowledge background and their overall opinions, leading to focus on lessons learned and suggestions for future editions. © 2018, N.M. This paper has as main objective the performance evaluation of the Gravitational Search Algorithm for Demand Response programs applied to residential consumers. For this purpose, it was considered a model that describes the consumption and energy price, according to the loads present in a residence. This way, it is intended to minimize the cost of electricity for final consumers based on an optimized planning of their loads at different times. In addition, it will be considered a variable cost of electricity over time (hourly price). In this sense, the cost of electricity will be discretized throughout the day. Finally, the performance of the Gravitational Search Algorithm for the considered model will be evaluated. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.
