Due to the continuous shrinking of the transistor sizes which is strongly driven by Moore's law, reliability becomes a dominant design challenge for embedded systems. Reliability problems arise from permanent errors due to manufacturing, process variations, aging as well as soft errors. As a result, the hardware will consist of unreliable components and hence, the development of embedded systems has to change fundamentally. Therefore, we propose a dependability-aware design approach for hardware systems through integrating dependability into a state-of-the-art system-level design language. Our approach is based on SystemC and extends the Program State Machine model to explicitly observe, diagnose, and compensate faulty behavior. Different compensation mechanisms like run-time reconfiguration or mechanisms for error propagation can be used by the designer during refinement. They are controlled by a new exception-like mechanism. Furthermore, our approach aims to integrate functional verification as well as dependability verification with respect to given fault models. © 2011 IEEE.

Web workloads are known to vary dynamically with time which poses a challenge to resource allocation among the applications. In this paper, we argue that the existing dynamic resource allocation based on resource utilization has some drawbacks in virtualized servers. Dynamic resource allocation directly based on real-time user experience is more reasonable and also has practical significance. To address the problem, we propose a system architecture that combines real time measurements and analysis of user experience for resource allocation. We evaluate our proposal using Webbench. The experiment results show that these techniques can judiciously allocate system resources.

Matchmaking is the basis of service discovery and composition. Using ontology semantically express the capabilities of services, accurately match, discovery and composition service. Domain ontologies and Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) aim at modeling concepts, the role of FCA in ontology engineering is supporting the critical task of reusing independently developed domain ontologies. Evaluating concept similarity identifies the different concepts that are semantically close. In this paper, using concept and attribute of Web services to construct the ontology. Also, an ontology-based method for assessing similarity between FCA concepts is proposed. Such a method is intended to support the ontology engineer in difficult activities such as ontology merging and ontology mapping in the development of the Semantic Web. © 2010 IEEE.

In view of the aging society, intelligent devices pervading everyday life are faced with important challenges, such as the ease of use and the ease of configuration. The whole potential of using a body area network with several sensors to monitor vital functions of a human body can only be tapped, if the sensors used are highly specialized and tightly integrated to collaborate in a decentralized way and exhibit true plug-and-play behavior. Although the aspect of interconnecting vital sensors close to the human body bears a variety of technical challenges in itself, the development of the necessary abstraction layer in software to hide the heterogeneity of the highly specialized sensor boards is confronted with even higher challenges as these devices are often equipped with very limited resources to reduce power consumption. However, this abstraction layer is a necessary prerequisite to facilitate the development of software for a body area network with the previously mentioned characteristics. This paper presents the results of a study conducted to evaluate the performance and overhead of using web services on embedded devices to implement an abstraction layer for a body area network. In several experiments, two different implementations of the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) were evaluated: the Microsoft . NET Micro Framework and the open-source DPWS-plugin from the Web Services for Devices initiative. These were used to measure absolute latencies and the "web service overhead" in the communication between three different types of resource-constraint devices.

In service-oriented systems, clients can access services via a network. Service level agreements (SLA) can exist, which specify - among other things - performance-related Quality of Service (QoS) properties between the client and the server, such as round-trip time, processing time, or availability. For a service provider serious financial consequences or other penalties can follow in case of not fulfilling the SLAs. The service consumer wants to evaluate that the provider complies with the guaranteed SLAs. Designing and developing a QoS-aware service-oriented system means facing many design challenges, such as where and how to measure the performance-related QoS properties. This paper presents design practices and patterns for measuring such QoS properties by extending and utilizing existing patterns. The focus of the patterns lies on the QoS measuring impact on the client's or service's performance, the extend of separation of concerns, the property of reusability, and the preciseness of the measured QoS properties. The patterns help to build efficient solutions to measure performance-related QoS properties in a service-oriented system.

It is a well-known factor that our activities of daily life play an important role for staying healthy. In order to validate different motion analysis techniques for clinical and therapeutic purposes Fraunhofer FIRST set up a sensor-controlled testbed. The technologies investigated include time-of-flight cameras, bio-inspired optical stereo-sensors, laminar pressure and proximity sensors as well as body-worn devices including inertial sensors. This paper presents these technologies and sketches the process of sensor fusion and motion analysis being under implementation in the Fraunhofer Motion technology Validation Lab.

DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) service is becoming a cheap new media with good performance. Since 2008 Beijing Olympic Game DAB traffic information broadcasting has being severed at Beijing Radio Station by 1039 channel. Under the framework of project Metrasys (Mega Region Transport System for China) which is funded by the Ministry of German Education and Research, a TPEG based DAB traffic information broadcasting system is built at the city of Hefei by Germany-Sino experts at the beginning of 2010. In the first section of the paper the background of DAB technology was introduced, then the system diagram and its configuration was mentioned in the second section. The unique feature of Hefei DAB system was to adopt the international TPEG standard, in the third section eight classes of traffic information was defined by TPEG. In the fourth section the structure of OBU (On Board Unit) was described briefly. Section described DAB broadcast program flow at Anhui Radio Station and its performance, and finally a conclusion was given.

This paper presents a new approach to reduce finite state machines with respect to a CTL formula to alleviate state explosion problem. Reduction is achieved by removing parts useless to the formula of original machines. The main contribution of this paper is to exploit relations among subformulas of the CTL formula so as to gain more reduction, as well as to extend traditional pruning method, which handles only existential formulas, to handle universal formulas. Based on this kind of reduction, verification of a large system, which usually consists of several components, can be done by evaluating properties on a reduced version of the system, which is built by composing components of the system one by one while doing reduction after each composition. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the approach. Especially when a property is written in a more detailed way, that is to describe the system part by part, the approach has a great potential.
