There has been an increasing interest in the ‘tongqi phenomenon’ in China. The ‘tongqi phenomenon’ is usually described in research as mixed-orientation marriages (MOMs). Tongqi refers to a group of heterosexual women who unwittingly married non-straight men. While the literature on the ‘tongqi phenomenon’ has mainly focused on the adverse effects and victimisation on tongqi, this qualitative study aimed to understand how tongqi construct their reality/perplexity within a MOM on how they determined conjugal relationships after discovering their husband’s sexual orientation. We adopted the virtual ethnography method to conduct non-participant observation in the tongqi online support group, followed by fourteen semi-structured, in-depth interviews in China. Three main themes emerged via thematic analysis: maintaining the intact marriage, reframing their marriage and getting a divorce. Tongqi showed agency and resilience in understanding their marital situations, navigating resources and making marital life fit their reality. The practical implications for social work and future studies are discussed.

The urgency of gender-responsive development planning in the implementation of village legislation is needed to facilitate the results of development that can be carried out by both men and women. This research aims to determine the efforts to increase gender mainstreaming in village development planning for the implementation of Number 6 the Year 2014 concerning Villages. This research was an evaluative descriptive study conducted in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency. The method used was a sequential mixed method, including secondary data, i.e., the identification of data and the review of documentation relevant to the research and primary data, i.e. the data collected through focus group discussion and questionnaire with Likert Scale. The sample was selected purposively from six villages. The data were analyzed by transforming qualitative data into quantitative data using basic internal measurements. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of Law Number 6 Year 2014 concerning with Villages in gender-responsive development planning in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency has not been fully integrated properly. This by gender-responsive indicators, which are still in the moderate category. The contents of the village RPJM documents do not fully represent the integration of gender issues. The representation of women in the village in village government organizational structure and village community organizations is still in low category. The availability of human resources that understand gender and mainstreaming and regulations/policies in the village level are still relatively moderate even though budget support has been in high category. In such a condition, full commitment from village government is needed in ensuring gender-responsive development planning in the village level through continuous and gradual capacity building, information dissemination, social media and innovative in developing a policy program in accordance with village authorit

Objectives: Adapting and testing a novel measure of family planning self-efficacy (FPSE) and examining its association with fertility intention and contraceptive use in India. Study design: Data were analyzed from 13,901 non-sterilized, currently married women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in the Bihar Integrated Family Planning Survey (BIFS) 2021. We adapted an FP Self Efficacy measure comprising women's agency to overcome barriers to accessing, discussing and using contraception, regardless of family pressure and social judgment. We used factor analyses to assess reliability and validity, and regression analyses to examine the associations of FPSE with key family planning outcomes. Results: The study sample was relatively young (35% below 25 years of age), with 43% reporting no education and over half (52%) married before 18 years of age. The 9-item FPSE scale demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach's α=0.82) with two factors – self-efficacy to access and discuss contraception versus self-efficacy to use contraception in the face of resistance. Higher FPSE was associated with spousal communication [AOR: 2.35 (95% CI: 2.18, 2.54), traditional [AOR: 1.24 (95% CI: 1.12,1.36)] and reversible modern contraception [AOR: 1.58 (95% CI: 1.43,1.75)], and fertility intention [AOR: 1.13 (95% CI: 1.01,1.25)]. Conclusion: FP Self Efficacy was found to be a reliable and valid measure associated with spousal communication, reversible contraception use and fertility intention. Implications: Measures to capture reproductive agency, such as family planning self efficacy within FP programs, place women's choice as central goals of FP programming and can help in meeting community needs and the demand for contraceptive use. © 2024 The Author(s)

Background There is a high prevalence of depression among refugee youth in low- and middle-income countries, yet depression trajectories are understudied. This study examined depression trajectories, and factors associated with trajectories, among urban refugee youth in Kampala, Uganda. Methods We conducted a longitudinal cohort study with refugee youth aged 16-24 in Kampala, Uganda. We assessed depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and conducted latent class growth analysis (LCGA) to identify depression trajectories. Sociodemographic and socioecological factors were examined as predictors of trajectory clusters using multivariable logistic regression. Results Data were collected from n = 164 participants (n = 89 cisgender women, n = 73 cisgender men, n = 2 transgender persons;mean age: 19.9, standard deviation: 2.5 at seven timepoints;n = 1,116 observations). Two distinct trajectory clusters were identified: sustained low depression level (n = 803, 71.9%) and sustained high depression level (n = 313, 28.1%). Sociodemographic (older age, gender [cisgender women vs. cisgender men], longer time in Uganda), and socioecological (structural: unemployment, food insecurity;interpersonal: parenthood, recent intimate partner violence) factors were significantly associated with the sustained high trajectory of depression. Conclusions The chronicity of depression highlights the critical need for early depression screening with urban refugee youth in Kampala. Addressing multilevel depression drivers prompts age and gender-tailored strategies and considering social determinants of health. © The Author(s), 2024.

OBJECTIVE:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is significantly over-represented among transgender adolescents. Independently, ASD and gender diversity are associated with increased mental health risks. Yet, mental health in autistic-transgender adolescents is poorly understood. This study investigates mental health in the largest matched sample to date of autistic-transgender, non-autistic (allistic) transgender, and autistic-cisgender adolescents diagnosed using gold-standard ASD diagnostic procedures. In accordance with advancing understanding of sex/gender-related autism phenotypes, slightly subthreshold autistic diagnostic presentations (common in autistic girls/women) are modeled. METHOD:This study includes 93 adolescents aged 13-21, evenly divided between autistic-transgender, autistic-cisgender, and allistic-transgender groups; 13 transgender adolescents were at the margin of ASD diagnosis and included within a larger "broad-ASD" grouping. Psychological and neuropsychological evaluation included assessment of mental health, IQ, LGBT stigma, ASD-related social symptoms, executive functioning (EF), and EF-related barriers to achieving gender-related needs. RESULTS:Autistic-transgender adolescents experienced significantly greater internalizing symptoms compared to allistic-transgender and autistic-cisgender groups. In addition to stigma-related associations with mental health, ASD-related cognitive/neurodevelopmental factors (i.e., poorer EF and greater social symptoms) were associated with worse mental health: specifically, social symptoms and EF gender barriers with greater internalizing and EF problems and EF gender barriers with greater suicidality. Comparing across all ASD and gender-related groups, female gender identity was associated with greater suicidality. CONCLUSIONS:Parsing the heterogeneity of mental health risks among transgender youth is critical for developing targeted assessments and interventions. The international CIH^LMU Occupational Safety and Health Symposium 2019 was held on 16th March, 2019 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Germany. About 60 participants from around the world representing occupational health and safety professionals, students, instructors from several institutions in Germany and abroad, attended the symposium. The main objective of the symposium was to create awareness on global challenges and opportunities in work-related respiratory diseases. One keynote lecture and six presentations were made. While the keynote lecture addressed issues on occupational diseases in the twenty-first century, the six presentations were centered on: Prevention and control of work-related respiratory diseases, considerations;Occupational health and safety in Mining: Respiratory diseases;The prevention of TB among health workers is our collective responsibility;Compensation and prevention of occupational diseases and discussion on how artificial intelligence can support them: Overview of international approaches;Work-related Asthma: Evidence from high-income countries;and The role of imaging in the diagnosis of work- related respiratory diseases. A panel discussion was conducted following the presentations on the importance and challenges of data acquisition which is needed to have a realistic picture of the occupational safety and health status of workers at different levels.
