Analysis of small island environmental carrying capacity in Panggang Island, Jakarta, Indonesia

To support continuity of life, information on the availability of natural resources is needed. Natural resources need in a region must not exceed their availability. Panggang Island is a small island with an area of 13.76 ha and a population density up to 4,388 people in 2019. The land use of the island is intended as a residential area. With a small area and dense population, the ability of the environment to support life in Panggang Island is concerning. This study aims to determine the carrying capacity of water and land in Panggang Island. Water carrying capacity analysis is carried out by comparing the amount of water resource availability with standard water needs. The Thornthwaite Mather method is applied to calculate the water resource availability. Land carrying capacity analysis is based on a comparison of the amount of actual residential land with minimum space requirements of each individual according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 03-1733-2004). The results showed that Panggang Island has a very low carrying capacity for water and land. The water and land carrying capacity index reaches 0.12 and 0.98 respectively. This shows that the demands of residential land and water in Panggang Island are higher than the resources.

The sea has economic potential such as marine tourism, energy, maritime industry, marine transportation, marine building and services, and fisheries. Indonesia has fishery resources with high biodiversity and easily accessible (renewable resources). Indonesia's fishery production reached approximately 12.6 million tonnes, of which marine catch accounted for about 6.71 million tonnes, inland capture for 0.51 million tonnes and the rest is in aquacultures. In addition, Indonesia is facing the problem of illegal fishing by foreign fishing vessels from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan and Cambodia. Foreign fishing vessels conducting illegal fishing are not only found in the EEZ, but also in territorial and archipelagic waters. Based on the findings of this study, the illegal fishing policy has a positive impact by reducing illegal fishing activities in the short term and increasing fisheries stocks. However, negative impacts were also found, the national fisheries business has decreased by number, especially local fishermen business, so that fishermen are unable to optimize their capture fisheries activities. Some local fishermen benefit economically from illegal fishing, this is what causes illegal fishing activities to continue. The policies that have been implemented have not been optimal in ensuring that fishermen are more prosperous. A sovereign state not only owns the territory and defends it from foreign disturbances, but must realize the welfare of its people, including fishermen. The purpose of this research is to see the effectiveness of fisheries policies in Indonesia to tackle illegal fisheries and improve fishermen's welfare. Integration of Satellite-Derived Bathymetry and Sounding Data in Providing Continuous and Detailed Bathymetric Information

A hydrographic survey can be a cumbersome sometimes. The data can be sparse, providing it can be costly, and it took a lot of manpower and time. Space-borne data like multispectral images can be a helpful tool towards hydrographic survey, especially in the shallow water area. The company like EOMAP and TCARTA make use of Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) as a tool and product. Would it be great if it also can be applied in Malaysia, especially on the low-risk job or survey planning? Enlarging the survey area and providing a continuous and detailed water depth information is the main objective in this research. In order to complement with convenience and cost reduction, the author used Landsat 8 '(free downloadable images)' in this research. Structuring the procedure is the central part of the process involving pre-processing and processing step until the final product obtained. In this research, the author used various kind of bathymetry algorithms such as Single-Band Algorithm (SBA), Green-Band Algorithm (GBA), and Stumpf. Moreover, the author also uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tool from ArcMap and Spear Relative Water Depth: Log-Ratio Transform tool from ENVI to derived bathymetry. All of this bathymetry algorithm gives out a different concept with a different statistical approach. The final result then will be compared and evaluated with Single-Beam Echosounder data (ground truth).

Indonesia is located in and surrounded by areas that have active plate movements, making its coastal and marine areas prone to tsunami, and creating negative impacts, such as damage to properties and increase in death rates. One of these areas is the coastal area in Pangandaran Regency, West Java. This study aimed to analyze the level of building vulnerability and impact of losses as a result of tsunami. The research method combined data of buildings that have been classified based on their type and uses with data of inundation caused by tsunami and coefficient of Damage Ratio. The study results showed that the type of buildings in the tourism area of Pangandaran Regency is dominated by 1-story permanent buildings (P1), in which 2,050 out of 3,103 buildings were identified as residences and businesses. In general, based on the coefficient of Damage Ratio in the tourism area of Pangandaran Regency, vulnerability level of buildings is within 51%-70%, which is considerably high and indicates that the buildings could suffer heavy damage if they are hit by tsunami. The tourism industry in the area lost 700 million rupiahs and fisheries industry lost 6.055 billion rupiahs due to the 2016 tsunami. Eight hotel/resort buildings have been recommended as temporary evacuation sites or shelter in the event of a tsunami.

Geospatial information is increasingly needed for the development of Indonesia's Special Economic Zones (SEZ) concept. Pangandaran Raya is one of the areas that have been proposed as one of the SEZ locations, having nature and coastal tourism as its primary economic activities, and certainly in need of geospatial information for its land, coastal, and marine areas. However, land, coastal, and marine geospatial information in Pangandaran have been collected and processed separately by different institutions and have caused an absence in data continuity in terms of resolution, reference, and data format. This paper aims to integrate the topographic and bathymetric data of Pangandaran to generate seamless digital elevation model of Pangandaran coastal area. Verification was done by calculating the RMSE of the difference between elevation produced by the seamless digital elevation model and elevation that had been observed with RTK in the field. The results show that the RMSE of the seamless digital elevation model was 27 cm and there were 6 factors that had controlled the quality of seamless digital elevation model. The main factor that had controlled the quality of seamless digital elevation model was topographic data quality.

The Land is a fundamental factor in production activity. Accordingly, it is closely related to economic growth—which supports the living needs of human beings. In many cases, human activities related to land use are often uncontrollable, impacting many negative effects on the environment, both locally and globally. More broadly, these activities will lead to some changes in land cover and some other physical features such as climate. In order to understand the phenomenon of land cover changes, we approach them through modelling. To detect any changes in land cover in a region, it is necessary to identify the driving factors causing land-cover change. The relation between driving factors and response variables can be evaluated by using regression analysis techniques. In this case, land cover change is a dichotomous phenomenon, i.e., binary. Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) model is one of the regression analyses which can be used to describe the nature of dichotomy. From the results of this study, the driving factors causing land-cover change in West Java were found, those are: the distances to the central business districts in some certain areas such as Bandung City, Bekasi Regency, Bekasi City, Bogor Regency, Karawang Regency, and Sukabumi Regency; the distance to the the capital of the province; the distance to the main roads; the population numbers; and some physical features of the land such as slope, curvature, and height. This predictive model had an accuracy level of 49,79%, which equals to 1.827.217,44 ha area.

Analysis of tsunami hazard in the Southern Coast of West Java Province - Indonesia

The Southern Coast of West Java Province in the Java Islands is one of prone and exposed area to tsunami hazard. It has about 428 kilometers coastline length, covering 5 administrational regencies (i.e. Sukabumi, Cianjur, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Pangandaran). It is a strategic area that support many economic activities including tourism, fisheries, electricity power plants, agricultures, markets as well as social factors such as coastal villages, schools and other public facilities. The existence of this strategic area is threatened by the potential for a tsunami disaster mainly from megathrust along the Southern Coast of Java Island. On 2006, a tsunami earthquake of M7.7 occurred off Pangandaran Regency with tsunami height of 5-8 meters and inundated about 500 meters along southern coast of West and Central Java Province. The tsunami caused more than 600 casualties and damage to buildings, public facilities and insfrastructure. Yet, the Indonesia National Earthquake Source and Hazard Map suggest a bigger threat of a plausible M8.7 – M9.2 megathrust earthquake off Java island. This research aims to analyze and map potential areas affected by the tsunami in the South Coast of West Java Province based on numerical modelling carried out with Cornell Multi-grid Coupled Tsunami Model (COMCOT) v1.7 based on the several megathrust earthquake scenarios in southern off West Java. The results of tsunami modelling show that the highest impact is generated in the Sunda Straits & West Java - Central Java Megathrust Scenarios with highest tsunami inundation and the fastest travel time occurred in Cianjur Regency with 26,7 meters height and estimated arrival time of tsunami wave approximately 10 minutes after the mainshock, while the farthest inundation distance is estimated in Sukabumi Regency about 5.8 kilometers from the coast due to existence of river.

Deformation analysis of Mentawai islands based on observation GPS data 2013-2016

The islands of Sumatra accommodate the collision of the Indies-Australian plate pressing the Eurasian plate at a speed of 5-6 cm/yr at the boundary between the plates along the west coast of Sumatra (Natawidjaja, D.H., 2007). The oblique collision between the two plates formed a subduction zone in the western part of the island of Sumatra and a number of fault segments on the island of Sumatra. Subduction zones and cesareans segments that are formed actively move so often cause earthquakes in the region. Mentawai islands are located in the westernmost part of Sumatra and belong to the subduction zone of Mentawai Segment Mentawai Islands movement can be identified using GPS observation data. The data used are GPS observation data from 2013 to 2016 coming from Sumatran GPS Array (SuGAr) Network. The data is processed using software GAMIT / GLOBK 10.6. The results of the GPS data processing will be processed to produce velocity velocities and strain values of each GPS observation station used to observe deformation activity on the Mentawai Islands. The results of GPS observation data processing showed vector movement in Mentawai Islands referenced to Sundaland Block leads to the northeast on the northern part of the Mentawai Islands, heading southwest to the southern part of the Mentawai Islands, and heading north to the central part of the Mentawai Islands. The strain obtained from data processing showed that the Mentawai Islands experienced an interseismic phase in the north, a post-seismic phase in the south and a transitional phase in the middle.
