This paper presents a novel pheromone update strategy for improving the clustering results of ant colony optimization (ACO). The proposed algorithm is motivated by the observation that most of the ACOs only keep track of the promising foraging information, which has the potential to lead to better solutions than all the other search directions in the pheromone table. This eventually makes the search converge to particular search directions in later iterations because the pheromone values on good routing paths will be reinforced. As such, the breadth of search (diversity) will be reduced, thus limiting the clustering results of ACO. The proposed algorithm adds a second pheromone table to ACO for recording the unpromising foraging information that is worse than all the other search directions and using a novel construction method to explore the new search directions. In other words, by leveraging the strengths of diversification and intensification, the proposed algorithm can find better solutions than traditional ACO. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we use it to solve the data clustering problem. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the quality of ant colony optimization.

In this paper, the successive module of the computer system for hand diseases diagnosis support is presented. Based on the upper surface borders of the metacarpophalangeal joints, syntactic description is constructed. Then, it is analysed to verify if considered border contains osteophytes. As has been presented, shape description introduced in this paper can be used to distinguish contour of the upper surface with and without osteophytes. This kind of diversification is required to build an intelligent system for joint diseases diagnosis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

This paper presents a novel ant colony optimization (ACO) based on an efficient solution construction strategy (transition operator) for improving the quality of the end results of job shop scheduling problem (JSSP). Inspired by the observation that the quality of the end results of ACO is largely affected by their operators-especially the transition operator, a novel solution construction strategy is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm uses two different strategies to compute the probability of solution construction to improve the end results. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms all state-of-the-art job shop scheduling algorithms evaluated in this paper and can significantly improve the quality of ant colony optimization for JSSP.

This paper presents a novel algorithm for tagging the relationship of test on the learning content called Binary Union-plus Tag (BUT). The proposed algorithm is motivated by the desire of students to re-study unacquainted content after a test. By binary coding items of content, BUT provides the users of an e-Learning system a certain range of content which lacks learning to connect to tests and content. It starts off with one of the content structures as a reference structure. Then, all the mistakes made on the test are mapped to the reference structure to highlight the re-studying area in the learning materials. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, it has been used on the learning process of two hundred grade students. Moreover, the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can considerably improve the achievement of students in terms of both locating the essential range of the content and providing the necessary matters.

One of the ways to improve the information content of a set of field data is that of combining the interpretation of disparate data sets. Electromagnetic and direct current resistivity methods suffer from inherent equivalence problem. Application of joint inversion for these measurements can overcome the problem of equivalence very well. In the present work, synthetic data from vertical electrical sounding (VES) and horizontal coplanar low-frequency induction sounding (EMHD) are inverted individually and jointly over different types of 1D earth structures. Global optimization with Monte Carlo Multistart algorithm was used in the calculations. The results obtained from the inversions of synthetic data indicate that the joint inversion significantly improves the solution reducing the ambiguity of the models. © 2010 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper proposes a sim-paramesium genetic algorithm to enhance the searching and optimizing speed of classical genetic algorithms. Based upon classical genetic algorithms, the sim-paramesium genetic algorithm employs additional operators, such as asexual reproduction, competition, and livability in the survival operation. Taking the advantages of these three operators, the searching and optimizing speed can be increased. Experiments indicate that simulations with the proposed algorithm have a 47% improvement in convergence speed on the traveling salesman problem. Also, while applying the proposed method to solve the graph coloring problem, the proposed algorithm also has a 10% improvement in solution qualities. Furthermore, since these operators are additional parts to the original GA, the algorithm can be further improved by enhancing the operators, such as selection, crossover, and mutation.

General-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) is a fast developing method of high performance computing (HPC). In some cases even a low-end video card can be several to dozens times faster than a modem CPU core. Seismic wave filed modeling is one of the problems of this kind. But in some modern methods of seismic exploration or seismology it is possible that hundreds of thousands of forward modelings are needed for final solution of the computational problem. Using mulit-GPU and hybrid CPU-GPU computations in distributed computer environments seems to be a natural next step in development of these method of HPC.

The ground deformations can be caused by many different factors. One of them is coal exploitation. It can cause not only strong and abrupt ground movements but also small, long period deformations which can occur even several years after exploitation is finished. In both cases these displacements are serious menace for surface and subsurface infrastructure. In this work the PSInSAR data were used to study small, long lasting ground deformations which occurred in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (south Poland) in the years 1992-2003. In this region the intensive coal exploitation has been carried on. Additionally this area has complicated geological structure. These factors make studied region particularly threatened with terrain deformations. The subsidence phenomenon was detected in this region using PSInSAR method. PSInSAR technique is a dynamically developed branch of satellite radar interferometry. It exploits a set of dozens satellite SAR images in order to detect small ground deformations for large areas. PSInSAR technique derives information only about ground movements for stable radar targets, so called PS points. They correspond with man-made features on the ground like buildings, bridges etc. In the Upper Silesian Coal Basin the values of ground deformations were measured for more then 120000 PS points. Their location is very irregular. In order to study the origin of this ground displacements the values of deformations have to be estimated in no-observed locations. In this work this estimation was performed using kriging which is a geostatistical method of interpolation. It is very computationally expensive method because it requires the solution of a large linear system for each grid node in which the interpolation is done. Because the PSInSAR dataset is very large the kriging computations were done in parallel environment.
