In this paper, based on 3d wavelet moments we present a new method called fractal scale descriptors for 3d objects. Just like wavelet moments, they are still robust to translation, rotation and scale, and have the multi-resolution features in the radial direction, which can handle noise to some extent and provide multi-level features to satisfy various requirements. Furthermore the new method is prior to the original 3d wavelet moments in computational complexity by using the fast algorithm of the spherical harmonics together with the Mallat algorithm of the wavelets.

This abstract describes ongoing work in developing large-scale knowledge repositories. The project addresses three primary aspects of such systems: integration of knowledge sources;access and retrieval of stored knowledge: scalable, effective repositories. Previous results have shown the effectiveness of description logic-based representations in integrating knowledge sources and the role of non-standard inferences in supporting repository reasoning tasks. Current efforts include developing general-purpose mechanisms for adapting reasoning algorithms for optimized inference under known domain structure and effective use of database technology as a large-scale knowledge base backend. This paper used surface curvatures and support vector machines for the identification of manufacturing processes in a database of mesh based CAD artifacts. The target is to classify prismatic machined and cast-then-machined parts into their respective classification to assist the manufacturing cost estimation. Current research on shape matching techniques has used shape functions to match the gross shapes of mesh models. However, they do not adequately discriminate artifacts manufactured by different processes. Our approach shows how different kinds of surfaces can distinguish different manufacturing processes. Statistics on surface curvatures are used to construct shape descriptors; then supervised machine learning classifier support vector machines are applied to separate the two classifications.

All engineering firms maintain archives of previously designed artifacts, often in the form of databases of computer aided design (CAD) data. Design repositories are an evolution of such databases to include more heterogenous information and to provide enhanced capabilities through the application of knowledge representation techniques. This paper introduces on-going work on applying description logic and the Semantic Web to constructing such design repositories.

We describe DAMLJessKB, a tool for reasoning with the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML) and performing inference on the Semantic Web. DAMLJessKB maps DAML’s semantics into facts and rules for use in a production system, such as the Java Expert System Shell (Jess). This article presents our underlying methodology and provides a detailed example of how DAMLJessKB can be used to make decisions about DAML-encoded engineering design knowledge. We believe that tools like DAMLJessKB are needed to help realize the full potential of the SemanticWeb and DAML. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The gene section ordering on solving traveling salesman problems is analyzed by numerical experiments. Some improved crossover operations are presented. Several combinations of genetic operations are examined and the functions of these operations are analyzed. The essentiality of the ordering of the gene section and the significance of the evolutionary inversion operation are discussed. Some results and conclusions are obtained and given, which provide useful information for the implementation of the genetic operations for solving the traveling salesman problem.

This paper provides a framework for information assurance within collaborative design, based on a technique we call role-based viewing. Such rolebased viewing is achieved through integration of multi-resolution geometry and security models. 3D models are geometrically partitioned, and the partitioning is used to create multi-resolution mesh hierarchies. Extracting an appropriately simplified model suitable for access rights for individual designers within a collaborative design environment is driven by an elaborate access control mechanism. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

This paper presents techniques for managing solid models in relational database management systems. Our goal is to enable support for traditional database operations (sorting, distance metrics, range queries, nearest neighbors, etc) on large databases of solid models. We introduce an approach to compare models based on shape using information extracted from the model boundary representation into Model Signature Graphs. We show how the Model Signature Graphs can be used to compute topological distances among models and how to use these measures to create metric spaces for indexing and clustering of solid models. We believe this work will begin to bridge the solid modeling and database communities, enabling new paradigms for interrogation of CAD datasets based on the engineering content of solid models. © 2001 by ASME.

This paper presents an approach to computer-aided design (CAD) that unites ideas from design with three-dimensional layouts and knowledge engineering. Our goal is to capture the structure, behavior, and function of CAD artifacts. We describe a software tool based on this approach, the conceptual understanding and prototyping (CUP) environment, for capturing the design intent inherent in the design process and authoring design semantics in previously created artifacts. CUP records design ideas, based on functional, geometric, and knowledge-based relationships among components in an electromechanical assembly. This design knowledge is stored using ontologies defined in XML. The goal of this work is to enable users to navigate intricate product data and design knowledge bases. © 2001 by ASME.
