Artificial intelligence (AI) relies on pattern recognition and classification algorithms to achieve accurate and efficient decision-making. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state-of-the-art for processing 2D image data, but their high computational and data requirements limit their use in resource-constrained environments. Hyperdimensional computing (HDC) offers a lightweight alternative, excelling in 1D tasks, but struggles to achieve competitive accuracy for 2D image classification. Hybrid frameworks combining HDC with CNNs have been proposed to improve accuracy but inherit the computational demands of deep learning, making them unsuitable for edge and IoT devices. To address this, we propose TransHD, a framework integrating lightweight spatial transformer networks (STNs) with HDC to enhance image classification performance while maintaining efficiency. TransHD achieves up to 9% higher accuracy than base HDC models on MNIST and Fashion-MNIST using only 30% of the training data, and reduces computational complexity by 2.5x through optimized STN feature map usage. On resource-constrained platforms like the Raspberry Pi 4, TransHD accelerates inference times by 3.4x and improves energy efficiency by 3.2x, with an accuracy trade-off of approximately 3% compared to CNNs. This study demonstrates the potential of combining HDC with STNs to develop efficient AI solutions for IoT and edge computing, where low energy consumption and computational efficiency are critical. © 2020 IEEE.

Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women worldwide. Early detection helps in reducing the number of deaths. Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a newer approach for breast screening, which has many advantages over handheld mammography such as safety, speed, and higher detection rate of breast cancer. Tumor detection, segmentation, and classification are key components in the analysis of medical images, especially challenging in the context of 3D ABUS due to the significant variability in tumor size and shape, unclear tumor boundaries, and a low signal-to-noise ratio. The lack of publicly accessible, well-labeled ABUS datasets further hinders the advancement of systems for breast tumor analysis. Addressing this gap, we have organized the inaugural Tumor Detection, Segmentation, and Classification Challenge on Automated 3D Breast Ultrasound 2023 (TDSC-ABUS2023). This initiative aims to spearhead research in this field and create a definitive benchmark for tasks associated with 3D ABUS image analysis. In this paper, we summarize the top-performing algorithms from the challenge and provide critical analysis for ABUS image examination. LiDAR-camera extrinsic calibration (LCEC) is the core for data fusion in computer vision. Existing methods typically rely on customized calibration targets or fixed scene types, lacking the flexibility to handle variations in sensor data and environmental contexts. This paper introduces EdO-LCEC, the first environment-driven, online calibration approach that achieves human-like adaptability. Inspired by the human perceptual system, EdO-LCEC incorporates a generalizable scene discriminator to actively interpret environmental conditions, creating multiple virtual cameras that capture detailed spatial and textural information. To overcome cross-modal feature matching challenges between LiDAR and camera, we propose dual-path correspondence matching (DPCM), which leverages both structural and textural consistency to achieve reliable 3D-2D correspondences. Our approach formulates the calibration process as a spatial-temporal joint optimization problem, utilizing global constraints from multiple views and scenes to improve accuracy, particularly in sparse or partially overlapping sensor views. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that EdO-LCEC achieves state-of-the-art performance, providing reliable and precise calibration across diverse, challenging environments. Transformer-based architectures start to emerge in single image super resolution (SISR) and have achieved promising performance. However, most existing vision Transformer-based SISR methods still have two shortcomings: (1) they divide images into the same number of patches with a fixed size, which may not be optimal for restoring patches with different levels of texture richness;and (2) their position encodings treat all input tokens equally and hence, neglect the dependencies among them. This paper presents a HIPA, which stands for a novel Transformer architecture that progressively recovers the high resolution image using a hierarchical patch partition. Specifically, we build a cascaded model that processes an input image in multiple stages, where we start with tokens with small patch sizes and gradually merge them to form the full resolution. Such a hierarchical patch mechanism not only explicitly enables feature aggregation at multiple resolutions but also adaptively learns patch-aware features for different image regions, e.g., using a smaller patch for areas with fine details and a larger patch for textureless regions. Meanwhile, a new attention-based position encoding scheme for Transformer is proposed to let the network focus on which tokens should be paid more attention by assigning different weights to different tokens, which is the first time to our best knowledge. Furthermore, we also propose a multi-receptive field attention module to enlarge the convolution receptive field from different branches. The experimental results on several public datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed HIPA over previous methods quantitatively and qualitatively. Researchers desperately ought to build an efficient turbine problem detection & simulation environment given the quick increase in wind energy capacity and the steadily rising operational cost duration of wind generators. The two aspects of fault identification & fault prediction are employed to describe the primary problem features of wind generators. We examine and synthesize the studies on fault detection techniques that rely on vibrating, electrical impulse evaluation, and pattern matching to address the challenging difficulties of defect detection. During the same period, we highlight the computationally efficient, constraints, and potential directions of distinct approaches. We review recent study developments & suggest a defect forecasting model that utilizes a physical breakdown prototype with data analysis theory fused depending on the mechanics and electronic subsystem degradation features of wind energy. In this study, we employ the Internet of Things (IoT) on Deep Learning (DL) architecture to forecast and identify wind energy generation issues. The testing findings demonstrate the method's ability to diagnose faults logically and forecast their types. © 2022 The Authors

Reinforcement learning compensated extended Kalman filter for attitude estimation

Inertial measurement units are widely used in different fields to estimate the attitude. Many algorithms have been proposed to improve estimation performance. However, most of them still suffer from 1) inaccurate initial estimation, 2) inaccurate initial filter gain, and 3) non-Gaussian process and/or measurement noise. This paper will leverage reinforcement learning to compensate for the classical extended Kalman filter estimation, i.e., to learn the filter gain from the sensor measurements. We also analyse the convergence of the estimate error. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated on both simulated data and real data. © 2021, CC BY.

Sequence-based filtering for visual route-based navigation: Analysing the benefits, trade-offs and design choices

Visual Place Recognition (VPR) is the ability to correctly recall a previously visited place using visual information under environmental, viewpoint and appearance changes. An emerging trend in VPR is the use of sequence-based filtering methods on top of single-frame-based place matching techniques for route-based navigation. The combination leads to varying levels of potential place matching performance boosts at increased computational costs. This raises a number of interesting research questions: How does performance boost (due to sequential filtering) vary along the entire spectrum of single-frame-based matching methods? How does sequence matching length affect the performance curve? Which specific combinations provide a good trade-off between performance and computation? However, there is lack of previous work looking at these important questions and most of the sequence-based filtering work to date has been used without a systematic approach. To bridge this research gap, this paper conducts an in-depth investigation of the relationship between the performance of single-frame-based place matching techniques and the use of sequence-based filtering on top of those methods. It analyzes individual trade-offs, properties and limitations for different combinations of single-frame-based and sequential techniques. A number of state-of-the-art VPR methods and widely used public datasets are utilized to present the findings that contain a number of meaningful insights for the VPR community. Grasping by Spiraling: Reproducing Elephant Movements with Rigid-Soft Robot Synergy

—The logarithmic spiral is observed as a common pattern in several living beings across kingdoms and species. Some examples include fern shoots, prehensile tails, and soft limbs like octopus arms and elephant trunks. In the latter cases, spiraling is also used for grasping. Motivated by how this strategy simplifies behavior into kinematic primitives and combines them to develop smart grasping movements, this work focuses on the elephant trunk, which is more deeply investigated in the literature. We present a soft arm combined with a rigid robotic system to replicate elephant grasping capabilities based on the combination of a soft trunk with a solid body. In our system, the rigid arm ensures positioning and orientation, mimicking the role of the elephant’s head, while the soft manipulator reproduces trunk motion primitives of bending and twisting under proper actuation patterns. This synergy replicates 9 distinct elephant grasping strategies reported in the literature, accommodating objects of varying shapes and sizes. The synergistic interaction between the rigid and soft components of the system minimizes the control complexity while maintaining a high degree of adaptability. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been considered as a widespread technical solution in recent years to meet the explosive data and massive device connections demands. On the other hand, Backscatter communication (BackComm) also equally evolved as a potential candidate to realize future Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. By deploying BackComm in UAV-enabled IoT system allows an efficient utilization of the network resources, especially, in remote areas and smart cities. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a UAVassisted multi-node BackComm network over generalized - shadowed fading channel. Closed-form expressions are derived to study the system performance through outage probability and average BER. Additionally, we obtain a simplified asymptotic expression in a high SNR regime, from which we gain insight into how the channel and system parameters affect the overall performance. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the derived theoretical results. © 2020 Association for Computing Machinery.

EEG signal contains a wealth of information about brain activity, but the recording process is inevitably contaminated by EOG artifacts. An effective method to remove EOG artifacts can provide a guarantee for subsequent EEG analysis. In this paper, we compare the performance of four ICA algorithms in removing EOG artifacts from EEG signals of methamphetamine addicts. From the perspective of time domain and power spectral density, all the four algorithms can effectively remove the EOG artifacts without obvious difference. In terms of PSNR, MI and processing speed, FastICA algorithm can achieve higher processing speed and reconstruct signals better than the other three algorithms.
