A comprehensive analysis of wind power integrated with solar and hydrogen storage systems: Case study of Java's Southern coast

Wind and solar energy are vital to the global transition toward sustainable energy systems, driven by the need to reduce fossil fuel dependence, mitigate climate change, and enhance energy security. This study aims to optimize system performance by integrating hydrogen technology and addressing capacity shortages and excess energy. First, a comprehensive analysis of wind characteristics in a strategically important area to meet unaccomplished Indonesia's 2023 wind energy targets, focusing on Java's southern coast using wind speed data from the System Advisor Model (SAM), was conducted. Four scenarios are then evaluated: wind turbine (WT)-battery energy storage system (BESS), WT-photovoltaic (PV)-BESS, WT-fuel cell (FC)-electrolyzer (EL)-hydrogen tank (H2T), and WT-PV–FC–EL-H2T. Key metrics analyzed include excess energy, Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), Net Present Cost (NPC), capacity shortage (CS), and electrolyzer full-load hours (EFH). Results show that average wind speeds reach 4.2 m/s in Pandeglang, with the WT–FC–EL-H2T system being the most reliable, exhibiting a 5% capacity shortage and 68.5% excess electricity. The WT-PV–FC–EL scenario is the most cost-effective, with a COE of $0.508/kWh and an NPC of $2.6 million. These findings provide valuable insights for improving sustainable energy infrastructure in the region. © 2024 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

Contribution: In this work-in-progress paper we describe the process of creating and validating a conceptual assessment in the field of sedimentology for undergraduate geoscience courses. The mechanism can aid future geoscience educators and researchers in the process of academic assessment development aligned with learning objectives in these courses. Background: Prior literature review supports the benefits of using active learning tools in STEM (Science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics) courses. This paper is part of a larger project to develop and incorporate research-based active learning software in sedimentology and other geoscience courses to improve grade point average (GPA) and time to graduation for Hispanic students at Texas A&M University. To evaluate the novel tool, we designed and validated the conceptual assessment instrument presented in this work. Research Question: What is the process to develop and validate a conceptual assessment for sedimentology? Methodology: This paper follows quantitative analysis and the assessment triangle approach and focuses on cognition, observation, and interpretation to design and evaluate the conceptual assessment. In the cognition element of the triangle, we explain the mechanism for creating the assessment instrument using students' learning objectives. The observation element explains the mechanism of data collection and the instrument revision. The interpretation element explains the results of the validation process using item response theory and reliability measures. We collected the conceptual assessment data from 17 participants enrolled in two courses where sedimentology topics are taught. Participants were geology majors in one of the courses and engineering majors in the other. This work aims to present the current scenario of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Brazil and fundamental criteria for prospecting potential areas. It reviews and applies the existing scientific literature used worldwide for CCS projects. By integrating information, we expect to provide comprehensive insights into CCS in Brazil and outline methods and criteria for screening and select areas in Brazilian sedimentary basins. This work is based on applied research methodologies. A survey was conducted to examine the current Brazilian context, including the potential sectors for CCS in the country and ongoing developments. Additionally, several previous works on projects worldwide were reviewed to formulate criteria for assessing the prospectivity of CO2 storage areas, which can be applied at scale. By combining Brazil's current status and CCS methodological references, we integrated information to propose an applicable site screening and selection criteria for Brazil. Furthermore, we elucidated some of the potential and challenges that the country faces. In Brazil, energy and industry are the principal sectors for decarbonization with CCS, including the oil and gas sector, bioenergy, thermal power plants, refineries, and steel, cement and chemical industries. Ongoing research is focused on specific storage sites and other CCS technologies. Currently, Brazil's CO2-EOR in the Pre-salt fields is globally recognized. Research is also being conducted on saline aquifers in the Paraná Basin to use CCS with bioenergy (BECCS). Additionally, there is a pilot project under development in the Parecis Basin. Despite these advancements, there have been no few approaches concerning methodologies and criteria for prospecting areas for permanent storage in Brazil. In this study, we propose a methodology for selecting and developing qualified CCS sites, which involves regional analysis, site screening, site selection, and site characterization. From November 2015 to February 2016, seismic swarm activity occurred around Jailolo volcano, a long-dormant and few-studied volcano located on Halmahera Island, North Moluccas, Indonesia. We perform seismic ambient noise tomography method to delineate the sub-surface seismic structure beneath Jailolo volcanic complex. We use the vertical seismogram data from 29 temporary short-period seismic stations of 7G Seismic Network from January to March 2017 observation. The 7G Seismic Network was collaborative research between the Indonesian Agency of Meteorology, Climatology, geophysics (BMKG), Indonesia, and the German Research Centre for Geoscience (GFZ). We cross-correlated vertical components of pair stations to estimate Green's Rayleigh wave function. More than 350 group velocities were estimated. We measure the dispersion characteristic of Rayleigh wave group velocity by applying the frequency-time analysis (FTAN) technique. We compare Green Function and the dispersion curve by applying different band-pass filters. The Green Function of Rayleigh wave is clearly seen in causal and/or acausal part by applied 0.01-0.5 Hz band-pass filter and then dispersion curve is picked within 2-10 s. The Rayleigh group velocities average is 0.6-0.9 km/s. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The application of seismic reflection and electrical resistivity methods (2D and 3D) in geotechnical investigations is explored through a case study in Northern Greece. These methods were employed to Mavropigi lignite open pit mine and the surveyed area is the next step in mining expansion. The main aim of the geophysical survey was to map the bedrock, the contact between the Neogene and Schist/Carbonate formations as well as to estimate the thickness of the carbonate rocks on top of the Schist formations in order to study the stability of the final mine slopes. Migration velocity of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data is a low wavenumber attribute crucial for migration. Obtaining a migration velocity model, which is considered closer to a Root Mean Square (RMS) model, from zero-offset (ZO) data requires analysis of the available diffractions whose density and (x, t) coverage is random. Thus, accuracy and efficiency of such a velocity model either for migration or its usage for interval velocity model estimation is not guaranteed. Here, with the aid of an Artificiaal Intelligence (AI) algorithm, which detects diffractions and usage of their kinematic information, we generate a diffraction velocity model used for the assignment of 2D weights for weighted multipath summation. The scope is to efficiently focus the scattered energy within a GPR section. We describe this methodology and demonstrate its application in enhancing the lateral continuity of reflections. We compare it with the multipath summation using lD weights with simulated data and present its application on marble assessment GPR data for imaging cracks in the subsurface structure.

Automatic Weather Station (AWS) has an anemometer to measure surface wind speed. In operation, the anemometer has a potential to damage internal components, causing data loss. Imputation is an alternative solution for missing data treatment. This study aims to utilize the spatial relationship of wind speed measurement on multi sites AWS in the imputation model. The imputation of the wind speed dataset uses Multivariate Imputation Chained Equation (MICE) algorithm with the input being the results of anemometer measurements at several surrounded points. The research focuses on the AWS Cisurupan site in the period 1 January 2019 - 31 December 2022. The wind speed dataset has a sampling interval of 10 minutes. MICE algorithm is able to overcome missing data on AWS wind speed measurement using the AWS neighbors input. MICE-based data imputation performance still meets WMO operational requirements for wind speed measurements with a maximum percentage of missing data of 15%. Mean average percentage error (MAPE) value obtained is less than 10%.

The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method utilizes low-frequency surface waves, to characterize the shallow subsurface layers. It is a very useful tool in geotechnical engineering for evaluating soil quality and mapping the characteristics of the upper sedimentary layers. Despite its efficiency, the limited productivity of conventional MASW due to its relatively slow data acquisition process presents a challenge, especially for large-scale projects, such as those carried out in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. To address this issue, we introduce the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves-Dual Streamer (MASW-DS) technique to enhance fieldwork productivity by almost 90%. This approach involves towing two parallel land streamers simultaneously behind a truck and enabling the acquisition of data from the two adjacent MASW profiles with a single source activated between the two land streamers. Our study evaluates the precision and effectiveness of MASW-DS through a set of synthetic and real data testing across diverse sites, demonstrating its potential for expedited surveys and reduced project costs. While MASW-DS introduces assumptions that may impact the resulting S-wave profiles, our findings indicate its comparable performance to conventional MASW, with negligible differences in dispersion curves and promising results, even in challenging geological settings. The proposed technique managed to reproduce the S-wave profiles resulting from the classic MASW deployment in the framework of an acceptable error for engineers. These results prove the reliability of the MASW-DS technique for subsurface characterization while achieving significant time and cost savings. MASW-DS also holds the potential for further enhancement by towing more than two land streamers simultaneously, positioning it as a valuable and effective tool for geotechnical investigations and civil engineering projects worldwide. © 2024, The Authors. Majes is one of the largest agricultural areas in the Arequipa region (southern Peru). Low seasonal precipitation and increasing water demands for agricultural irrigation, industry, and human consumption have made water supply projections a major concern. Agricultural development is becoming more extensive in this dry, sunny climate where crops can be grown year-round. However, because this type of project usually involves significant perturbations to the regional water cycle, understanding the effects of irrigation on local hydrology is crucial. Based on the watershed-scale Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), this investigation focuses on the impacts of intensive irrigation on hydrological responses in the Majes region. This study is unique because we allow for crop-field scale input within our regional-scale model to provide information at this smaller scale, which is important to inform local stakeholders and decision makers. Each hydrologic response unit (HRU) was generated to represent an individual crop field, so that management practices could be applied according to real-world scenarios. The management file of each HRU was modified to include different operation schedules for crop rotation, irrigation, harvest, and tillage. The model was calibrated and validated against monthly observed stream discharge during the 2009–2020 period. Additionally, evapotranspiration, irrigation water volume, and daily stream discharge downstream of the local river (Siguas) were used to verify the model performance. A total of 49 sub-basins and 4222 HRUs were created, with 3000 HRUs designated to represent individual crop fields. The simulation results revealed that infiltration from agricultural activities in Majes represents the majority of annual groundwater return flow, which makes a substantial contribution to streamflow downstream of the Siguas River. The research was conducted to determine the subsurface layer type in the Sutami Dam area using magnetic methods. This study aims to determine the subsurface soil type in the area around the Sutami Dam. The instrument used in data collection was the Proton Precession Magnetometer (PPM) Scientrex Model G-8. The data collection area covers the Kromengan region (112.494oE;8.129oS) to the Sukorame area (112.358oE;-8.213oS). The area covers the Sutami Dam area. The research area is 15 km x 15 km or with an area of 225 KM with a space between points 300 m. From the data acquisition, it was found that the number of data collection points was 1372 points. The types of subsurface layers based on the 2,5 D Talwani modeling are soil, pumice, limestone, sandy tuff, sandstone, andesite, and lava. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing.
