Shear wave velocity analysis for site classification of Tadulako University using microtremor measurements

Shear wave velocity (Vs30) is one of the local condition parameters often used to determine buildings’ vulnerability to potential damage if an earthquake occurs. This parameter is essential for planning and evaluation in infrastructure development. Tadulako University, which is repairing the building and the layout of the campus area after the September 28, 2018 earthquake, needs to consider the parameters of the shear wave. Measurements of the Vs30 value have been carried out at 20 points spread across Tadulako University using the microtremor method. The value of Vs30 is then estimated to determine the classification of the surface soil. The results obtained indicate that the variation in value is not too significant; it is between 424 m/s – 530 m/s. This value is included in the C class site and has very dense soil and soft rock soil profile classification. The highest value is in the southwest part, and the lowest value is in the northeast part.

Measurement of vulnerability index to heatwave disaster in South Korea

The risk of heatwaves is increasing due to climate change and requires a proper understanding of socially vulnerable people to heatwave. High temperatures during summer can last for a long period which affects and increase the risk to people, society, and the environment in South Korea. Assessment of social vulnerability suggests a direction for creation of a basis for risk assessment. The risk assessment herein can play an essential role in establishing a response plan for heatwaves disaster. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the social vulnerability of individual risk factors on heatwaves-related patients across 248 administrative regions in South Korea in terms of spatial and temporal variation change based on related heatwave patients’ indicators which to be considered for the risk. In this study, the indicators were assessed through Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency during 2016 to 2019. For this purpose, the approach of SoVI (Social Vulnerability Index) is used to analyze the dataset which consists of 42 indicators derived from 6 categories such as gender, age, occupation, thermal symptom, time, and place of incidents. SoVI is considered for the construction of vulnerability indexes from high to low vulnerability level. The social vulnerability index results could be considered in the heatwaves risk assessment and enhance the understanding social vulnerability of the heatwaves in different places and time. Additionally, it suggests a direction for decision makers and planners to develop countermeasures disaster risk strategy in regards to heatwaves.

This paper presents a case study of reconstructing past landslide failure models in a napal geological formation by undertaking a series of geoelectrical tomographies and geotechnical bor-SPT surveys. Study area is located in the National Artery Road 135 Kilometres, Majene-Mamuju, West Sulawesi. Geological formation found in the area is Napal Pambauang Formation. Massive ground movement is obviously detected in the area, and several landslide events have been occured in the last 10 years. In order to derive an effective technnique of mitigating the landslide in the area, past landslide failure models are needed to reconstruct. Therefore, 2D geoelectric tomographies survey combined several geotechnical bors were undertaken. A Framework of geophysics and geotechnical investigations was developed and implemented. The results show that slope failure models can be mapped, following unique patterns in the subsurface resistivity models. The finding slope failure models are well agreement with successive scarp patterns founded in the slope area. Past and recent landslides and future landslide are derived and this can be employed to design effective landslide mitigation strategies. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A single ambient noise measurement has been found to be useful in investigating the near-surface geology in particularly for estimating site fundamental frequency. This single microtremor method is very attractive and has been successfully applied in many projects as the method is non-destructive, low cost, feasible for urban environments, fast, and deep penetration. Furthermore, this single microtremor method has been successfully applied in many projects. This paper presents the application of the single microtremor method to estimate the site fundamental frequency at a site in the historical city of Byblos, Lebanon. Pre-processing of industrial origin detection was carried out. Several durations of the measurements were investigated to obtain the most stable results. The site fundamental frequency was validated using one-dimensional site response analysis. The results are presented in this paper. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. The geochemical method is one of the methods used to know the characteristics of hot spring, and the estimation of subsurface temperature or geothermal reservoir. Analysis of chemical properties of hot springs through thermal chemistry by using trilinear diagram. The methods used are literature study and field observations such as mapping the distribution of hot water spring, titrimetric laboratory analysis, gravimetric, and spectrophotometer for the analysis of hot water spring through the geochemical approach in determining the type of hot water spring. The average temperature of 480C and pH of 7,85, clear color, smelled sulfur and taste salty. The result on the percentage value of the ion content in the hot springs samples that have been analyzed their chemical content, especially the anion content of CI, SO42−, and HCO3− CO32− indicates that hot spring type of Barasanga is a type of chloride. This is indicated by the large chloride ion content ranging from 85.486% to 90.627%.

Remote sensing techniques provide valuable insights into lithological interpretation and improve the accuracy of geological surveys. Due to the complex terrain of Langkawi Island, which is in the northwestern part of the Malay Peninsula, conducting detailed field investigations is challenging. However, advancements in technology have made remote sensing an effective method for surveying areas that are hard to access. In this study, Landsat 9 data, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, served as the primary source of information. The initial preprocessing of this data was done using ENVI software. After preprocessing, carefully selected band combinations and ratios were used to extract valuable geological insights. Remote sensing-based lithological interpretation is crucial in modern geological surveys. In this study, the band ratio technique was employed to map the lithological distribution. This study focused on the southern end of the Langkawi archipelago, specifically the Dayang Bunting and Tuba Islands, where the geological characteristics are of particular interest due to their unique geological history and topography. To achieve the objectives, the band ratio technique applied to satellite imagery allows for the derivation and analysis of the lithological distribution patterns on these islands. This study compared previously used band ratio combinations with those tested here to find the most effective for distinguishing lithology types. After testing 32 permutations, by comparing with the original geological map and combining previous field observations, the four most successful combinations were visually evaluated: RGB 2/3 2/5 2/6, 4/3 4/6 4/7, 2/4 2/6 2/7, and 5/2 5/6 5/7. On Dayang Bunting and Tuba Islands, these combinations revealed distinct colors, differentiating limestone, marble, and granite. Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reducing the noise in potential field data using an approximation based on vertical continuation filters

Noise attenuation plays an important role in interpreting potential fields. Some classical filters such as Gaussian, moving average and Hanning filters can be used to reduce the noise in data. However, these filters may lead to incorrect depth estimates. In this study, we introduce a new algorithm providing an approximation of potential field data using vertical continuation filters (upward and downward continuation), which provides improved performance in reducing noise as a low pass filter. We also simplify the downward continuation method based on Taylor series expansion, providing a formula for its coefficients. The applicability of the presented algorithm is estimated using synthetic datasets and a real dataset of the Olympic Peninsula (United States). We also estimate the effects due to the smoothing of data on the depth estimates using the Tilt-depth technique. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that it removes noise effectively and allows a more accurate quantitative analysis of potential field data.
