Indonesia is located along the archipelago which has abundance of volcanoes along the arc. Therefore, Indonesia has a very high geothermal energy potential, such as the Rendingan-Ulubelu-Waypanas Geothermal Field in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province. Geophysical exploration is required to characterize the subsurface geothermal system. One of the methods that can be used is gravity method. The data used in this study is an analog Rendingan-Ulubelu-Waypanas Geothermal Field Complete Bouguer Anomaly Map of 2005. The analog map was then converted into digital map for further data processing. Separation of regional and residual Bouguer anomalies has been performed using moving average and spectral filter methods, in which the spectral analysis was conducted in 1D and 2D. The value of Bouguer background density used for 2.5D subsurface modeling is 2.67 g/cc. The gravity anomalies obtained in this study can be interpreted as follow. The existence of high anomalies under Mount Waypanas was interpreted as a Tertiary intrusion of granite with a density contrast of 0.22 g/cc. While low anomalies in the northern part was interpreted as a Quaternary intrusion of diorite with a density contrast of -0.22 g/cc, which acts as the heat source of the system. The reservoir of the system is the Quaternary young volcanics exposed on the surface with averaged thickness of 1500 m. We concluded that the fluid flow in this geothermal system is the meteoric water from Mount Rendingan and Mount Tanggamus, which has a higher topography, flows to a lower topography area in the Mount Waypanas, The fluid flow also creates an upflow under Mount Rendingan. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. The Complete Bouguer Anomaly (CBA) map from 1997 gravity survey at Karaha-Telaga Bodas, West Java, Indonesia is used to make a model of the subsurface geothermal system. A two-dimensional cross-section of the system is produced using a 2.5-D forward modeling. Initially, the print CBA maps of the Karaha-Telaga Bodas geothermal system is digitized. Next, the digital map is separated by using the moving average and spectral filtering methods, so a regional and residual anomaly maps are obtained. The subsurface modelling is made based on geological information of the area to produce a model that can represents the real condition as similar as possible. The line chosen for modelling has a North - South orientation, passing through Karaha and Telaga Bodas to foresee both of the geothermal system in one cross-section. Subsurface model interpretation shows that there are two separate granodiorite intrusion body with density contrast of 0.5 g/cc below Karaha - Telaga Bodas. This conclusion coincides with the intrusion body found during drilling operation. The intrusion body is possibly the heat source of the system. The reservoir of this system is interpreted as volcanic breccia with thickness of two kilometres in Telaga Bodas and keeps thinning towards Karaha. The fluids of the Karaha-Telaga Bodas Geothermal System are estimated to come from acid sulphate water and meteoric water entering from Telaga Bodas, as well as meteoric water entering from Karaha. This paper reviews several effective ULF frequency ranges of geomagnetic field used by prior studies to detect earthquake precursor. Since the chosen frequency ranges are rather arbitrary across different studies, it is important to determine whether any particular range is more effective than others to predict earthquakes having different characteristics, i.e. magnitude, depth and epicentral distance. It is found that there is no significant correlation between any earthquake parameter with effective ULF frequency ranges. It is also concluded that frequency ranges of 0.02 - 0.04 Hz and 0.06 Hz are more optimal for earthquake prediction purpose. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Integrated Pore Pressure Model Estimation – Case Study of Jambi Sub-basin, South Sumatera, Indonesia

Pore pressure estimation is crucial in drilling wells for safety purposes also a very effective method for dealing with drilling accidents. Determination of overpressure is the main foundation in the evaluation to minimize the non-productive time (NPT). Here we present several models to generate pore pressure analysis of well from Jambi Sub-basin, South Sumatera, Indonesia. The model for estimation pore pressure is carried out by 3 methods: Eaton, Yan & Han, and Kan & Swan. Those methods will be compared to gain a more accurate model estimation within the study area. Kan and Swan's model show the best fit for estimation because this method is suitable for the formation of tester like MDT/DST on higher frequency with parameter of C1 = 0.001 and C2 = 0.0003 for Jambi Sub-basin. The velocity data to construct the 3D pore pressure model was also validated with well data using multi-attribute analysis. The multi-attribute analysis used 2 algorithms, namely step-wise regression and probabilistic neural network (PNN). The analysis show that PNN has a better correlation compared to step-wise regression. The analysis shows the overpressure zone depth is ranges from 1700 – 2000m on Gumai Formation with maximum pressure around 6500 psi. The peak of overpressure dominated by Gumai and Talang Akar formation is caused by the loading mechanism because the rate of sedimentation on thick shale sequence is higher than the rate of dewatering on those formations.

In regions with limited surface water supplies, hydraulic fracturing (HF) events consume high volumes of groundwater over the span of a few weeks. The sporadic pumping schedules from Rig/Frack Supply Wells (RFSWs) contrast with the seasonal pumping from irrigation wells and the steady year-round pumping from municipal wells. The objective of this study is to assess the impacts of groundwater pumping for HF on hydraulic heads in other sector water wells and layer-to-layer volumetric flux between the four layers that comprise the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer in south Texas. The study period spanned from 2011 to 2020. The pumping schedules of 2,500 RFSWs were estimated from reported water volumes for each of the 22,500 HF events. To assess the importance of spatial resolution in groundwater models the impacts of RFSW pumping were quantified using both an existing numerical groundwater model with 1 mile 2 grid cells and a simpler analytical model. The median annual drawdowns predicted by the numerical and analytical models ranged from 0.2 to 0.8 m and 0.2 to 6.6 m, respectively. The analytical model predicted more severe, but less frequent drawdowns than the numerical model. High temporal and spatial resolution models are required to plan for the impacts of pumping for HF supply on other sector wells. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

CO2 injection into the hydrocarbon reservoir affects the subsurface mechanics and hydraulic condition. The injection has to be performed in a way that there will be no reservoir and/or top seal failure. In such case, a simulation of the injected fluid propagation needs to be performed to see its possible impact to the top seal and existing major faults. We use finite element method to perform this injection simulation. In this research, we use open source software Finite Element Heat and Mass Transfer Code (FEHM) to simulate CO2 injection processes into reservoir. Subsurface geological model was constructed in a dimension of 3000 m (easting) x 3000 m (northing) x 2000 m (vertical). Vertically, it consists of four layers which represent upper layer (400 m), top seal (200 m), reservoir (900 m), and basement (500m). The grid around the reservoir rocks is refined to give more detail results. The open hole injection is set at 850 - 890 m depth, 1500 m easting and 1500 m northing. The material is assumed to be isotropic. The initial pressure and temperature increase as a function of depth with a pressure gradient of 0.00981 MPa/m and a temperature gradient of 0.025 degrees C/m. A vertical fault is modelled at 600 m eastern to the injection well. Injection process is carried out with 6 kg/s of CO2 injection with simulation time for ten years to see its impact to the fault. A vertical fault is The modelling results show that the CO2 injection will not reactivate the fault at 10 years. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Seismic methods widely used to study the shallow subsurface for different purposes. Analysis of P-wave refraction cannot uniquely determine the seismic velocities as a function of depth when a low velocity layer is present. It is situation commonly encountered in geotechnical site investigation. Utilization of Rayleigh wave dispersion can be uses to determine the structure with existence of low velocity zone. In this study, we discuss efficiency and effectiveness of a joint inversion of Rayleigh wave dispersion curve which combining the genetic algorithm and the Occam's algorithm to delineate a low velocity zone. Numerical test is presented. The shear wave velocity and thickness errors which is the difference between the true and inverted model parameters is used to appraise the value accuracy inversion model. The result provides accurate solution models with is 2.3 % and is 13.4%. Finally, we demonstrates the joint inversion scheme to invert Rayleigh wave dispersion curve which calculated by phase-shift method from a real example data. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Shallow intrusions of igneous rocks are often found in the Kalisonggo area and form a columnar joint. The presence of shallow intrusions of igneous rocks in the study area is closely related to Mount Mujil as an ancient volcanic system. This study aims to prove the existence of igneous intrusion and subsurface conditions using the geomagnetic method. First Horizontal Derivative (FHD) is used to determine the edge boundaries of the anomalous source of the rock’s magnetic field. Quantitative interpretation is done by using 2.5 D modeling to determine the distribution of igneous intrusion in the study area. The results of data processing show the total anomaly value in the study area has a range of values ranging from -400 nT to 600 nT. Whereas the local anomaly value that has been reduced to the equator has a range of values between 350 nT and the lowest -400 nT with a closed contour closure pattern between the high anomaly and the low anomaly. Based on the cross-section results of 2.5 D incision 1 and 2, there are 3 layers of rock in the presence of boulder lava andesite. The andesite lava has a susceptibility value of 0.00004 SI which penetrates the bedding above it. The top layer is soil with a susceptibility value of 0.00001 SI. The next layer is the andesite breccia rocks with a susceptibility value of 0.00003 SI. The third layer is sandstone with a susceptibility value of 0.000005 SI. The model shows that the andesitic lava lumps did not break through the basement, this is following Van Bemmelen’s opinion that igneous rock in Kalisonggo is an avalanche.

Typical meteorological year (TMY) for a specific location is critical information when designing low-carbon and energy-saving buildings. However, in developing countries, long-term observations of weather are now readily available and even mixed with missing values. In this study, a nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) recurrent neural network model in combination with improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) method is demonstrated for treating the missing values in observed daily average air temperature at Bogor City in Indonesia. The prediction results for missing values indicate that the ICEEMDAN-NAR hybrid model performs very well with high accuracy when compared with the observed in the validation and model comparison phases. Particularly, the relatively lower frequency oscillation modes in observed data can be predicted well. Thus, this method can be used for relatively medium- and long-term prediction of missing values with respect to the given data/input period. critical to consider cities and buildings from the eyes of older people in society.

To characterize crustal azimuthal anisotropy in the Zhangjiakou-Penglai Fault Zone, we apply a recently-developed deconvolution approach to effectively remove near-surface reverberations in the receiver functions recorded at 64 broadband seismic stations. We subsequently determine the fast orientation(φ) and the magnitude of crustal anisotropy(δt) by fitting the sinusoidal moveout of the P to S converted phases from the Moho. The δt is found to range from 0.1 s to 0.54 s, with an average of 0.28±0.09 s. Fault-parallel anisotropy in the seismically active Zhangjiakou-Penglai Fault Zone is most likely related to the fluid-filled fractures, and the results in the fault zone support the existence of a broad shear zone at depth. Historical strong earthquakes mainly occurred in the segments of the fault zone with significant crustal anisotropy, suggesting that the measured crustal anisotropy is closely related to the degree of crustal deformation. The observed spatial distribution of crustal anisotropy suggests that the Zhangjiakou-Penglai Fault Zone has limited influence on the interior of the stable western North China Craton and the northwestern terminus of the fault zone probably ends at about 114° E.
