Aim Plant senescence largely influences the global carbon cycle by regulating the growing season length. However, the driving mechanisms of plant senescence remain unclear, particularly the role of developmental factors. This study aims to investigate how environmental and developmental factors drive autumn senescence and evaluate whether woody and herbaceous plants exhibit divergent responses to these drivers. Location Eurasia. Time Period 1982–2014. Major Taxa Studied Woody and herbaceous species. Methods Using 120,833 long-term ground phenological observations, we employed partial correlation analysis to investigate the influence of environmental and developmental factors on senescence termination. Experimental records from literature and pasture survey observations from China were separately utilised to further validate the influence of developmental factors on senescence termination. Structural equation modelling was applied to analyse the pathways of growth onset affecting senescence termination. Additionally, multiple linear regression was used to examine the tendency of the sensitivity of senescence termination to plant development rate. Results We find that earlier growth onset primarily leads to earlier senescence termination directly in herbaceous plants, but indirectly in woody plants by accelerating early-season development. The sensitivity of senescence termination to plant development rate shows a declining trend, particularly in early-season negative effects on woody plants and late-season positive effects on herbaceous plants, suggesting diminished impacts of future warming on senescence timing. The impact of growing season photosynthetic activity on senescence termination is not pronounced for both woody and herbaceous plants. Extracting human emotions at different places based on facial expressions and spatial clustering analysis

The emergence of big data enables us to evaluate the various human emotions at places from a statistic perspective by applying affective computing. In this study, a novel framework for extracting human emotions from large-scale georeferenced photos at different places is proposed. After the construction of places based on spatial clustering of user generated footprints collected in social media websites, online cognitive services are utilized to extract human emotions from facial expressions using state-of-the-art computer vision techniques. And two happiness metrics are defined for measuring the human emotions at different places. To validate the feasibility of the framework, we take 80 tourist attractions around the world as an example and a happiness ranking list of places is generated based on human emotions calculated over 2 million faces detected out from over 6 million photos. Different kinds of geographical contexts are taken into consideration to find out the relationship between human emotions and environmental factors. Results show that much of the emotional variation at different places can be explained by a few factors such as openness. The research may offer insights on integrating human emotions to enrich the understanding of sense of place in geography and in place-based GIS. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A 2.1 year periodic oscillation of the γ-ray flux from the blazar PG 1553+113 has previously been tentatively identified in ∼ 7 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. After 15 years of Fermi sky-survey observations, doubling the total time range, we report > 7-cycle γ-ray modulation with an estimated significance of 4 σ against stochastic red noise. Building extraction is still a difficult issue in the field of remote sensing. In order to extract the buildings with similar structures efficiently, an algorithm based on multi-subgraph matching is proposed using only the panchromatic high-resolution remotely sensed imagery (RSI). Firstly, scale-invariant feature transform feature is detected within both RSI and building template, and the corresponding graphs are constructed. Then, binary matching rules are defined to reconstruct the graphs to reduce the complexity. At last, according to the homogeneity of the building top, disconnected subgraphs are isolated from the reconstructed graphs. To improve the algorithm accuracy, the matched subgraphs are optimized on the basis of the differences in the structure and size. For verifying the validity of the proposed method, nine representatives are chosen from GF-2 images covering Guangzhou, China. Experimental results show that the precision and recall of the proposed method are 97.73% and 87.16%, respectively, and its overall performance F1 is higher than the three other similar methods.

An approach to building area extraction from high-resolution remote sensing imagery is proposed based on the local gradient orientation density function (LGODF) and the bimodal density function (BDF). Firstly, the LGODF is calculated by moving the window of 35 × 35 based on the gradient magnitude and the gradient direction of each pixel in the image. Then, the BDF is obtained by multiplying the movable bimodal Gaussian mixture function and LGODF in each window. Finally, peaks with difference of 90° are searched for in the BDF, and the central point of the corresponding windows are determined as building pixels. For the validity of the proposed method, seven representative sub-images from PLEIADES images covering Shenzhen China are selected. Experimental results reveal that the precision achieve 94.08% and the recall up to 96.70%.

We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical and/or X-ray binary systems co-located with LAT sources also likely harbor gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to ≤ 11 known before Fermi. Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with 6 undetected in radio. Overall, ≥ 236 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power E decreases to its observed minimum near 1033 erg s−1, approaching the shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. Building extraction from panchromatic high-resolution remotely sensed imagery based on potential histogram and neighborhood Total variation

In order to extract buildings using only gray information, this article proposed an approach for recognizing and extracting buildings from panchromatic high-resolution remotely sensed imagery based on shadows and segmentation. First, shadows were detected by potential histogram function. Second, the value of neighborhood total variation for each pixel was calculated, and then binarization and annotation were implemented to generate lable regions whose centroids were used as the seeds of the region growing segmentation, candidate buildings were selected from the segmentation result with the constraint of aspect ratio and rectangularity. At last, shadows were processed with open, dilate and corrode operations respectively, buildings were extracted by computing the adjacency relationship of the processed shadows and candidate buildings, and the building boundaries were fitted with the minimum enclosing rectangle. For verifying the validity of the proposed method, eighteen representative sub-images were chosen from PLEIADES images covering Shenzhen, China. Experimental results show that the average precision and recall of the proposed method are 97.95 % and 79.40 % for the object-based evaluation, and are 98.75 % and 83.16 % for the area-based evaluation respectively, and it has more 10 % and 6 % increase in the overall performance for above two evaluation criterion comparing with two other similar methods.

Surveys show that more than 80% authentication systems are password based and these systems are increasingly under direct and indirect attacks. In an effort to protect the Positive Authentication System (PAS), the negative authentication concept was introduced [9]. Here, the representation space of password profile is called self-region; any element outside this self-region is defined as the non-self-region. Then anti-password detectors (clusters) are generated covering most of the non-self-region while leaving some space uncovered to reduce detector generation time and obfuscation. In this work, we investigate a Grid-based NAS approach, called G-NAS, where anti-password detectors are generated deterministically. This approach allows faster detector generation compared to previous NAS approaches. We reported some experimental results of G-NAS using different real-world password datasets. Results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach and exhibited significant improvements compared to NAS approaches. It appears to be more robust and scalable with respect to the size of password profiles and able to update of detector sets on-the-fly.

Exploring a "real life use case", the present study analyzed Internet free and open map systems and elected OpenStreetMap as appropriate for undergraduate students who have studied and tested it. OpenStreetMap (OSM) proved to be easily used by students, mainly due to the community-oriented characteristics of this "Volunteered geographic information" - system (VGI). The test conducted by this research work was the adoption of tasks such as mapping towns within cartography disciplines, which confirmed the ability of OSM to contribute to the learning process, using their "local knowledge", motivated for involving real-life problems of their local neighborhoods as problem-oriented learning approach. A learning step flow (script) indicated that such conditions can be explored in formal academic (cyber-) cartographic education in both ways: cartographic production and education can mutually benefit from each other - based on a collaborative framework pushed by local real-life challenges. Overall, this paper will be of interest to lecturers and students considering using OSM as a "learn by doing" platform for "Location-based service applications" (LBS).
