Reactive surface intermediates over Ni-grafted TiO2 nanotube arrays towards hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline and chloride media

In this study, the Ni nanoparticles grafted TiO2 nanotubes electrode improved by surface reconstruction (s-Ni/TiO2/Ti) shows the facile hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the alkaline and chloride solutions. Nickel nanoparticles were electrochemically grafted on the anodic TiO2 nanotubes under different conditions. The heat treatment of TiO2 nanotubes contributes to the enhancement of electrical conductivity and template adherence. The surface reconstruction is indicated to create heterojunction intermediates, Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH, on the surface of Ni nanoparticles. An extremely low overpotential of 126 mV is required for HER on the s-Ni/TiO2/Ti electrode in 1.0 M KOH solution, showing higher activity than Pt/C. Besides, the developed electrode exhibits an overpotential of 127 mV for HER in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl solution. The long-term stability over 100 h suggests a highly active and inexpensive material choice for substituting the precious electrocatalysts in corrosive media such as seawater. © 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Synthesis of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) containing high glycolide contents by ring-opening polymerization as well as their structural characterizations, thermal properties, morphologies, and hydrophilicity

Random copolymers, poly(l-lactide-r-glycolide) are synthesized by one-pot ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide and glycolide in the presence of stannous octoate and 1-dodecanol. Block copolymers, poly(l-lactide-b-glycolide) are synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide to generate poly(l-lactide) first and then further ring-opening polymerization of glycolide in the presence of poly(l-lactide) and stannous octoate. The composition ratio of l-lactide and glycolide is determined by the integration of the corresponding signals from 1H NMR spectra, which is consistent with the feeding ratio. Very few hetero-sequences can be observed for block copolymers due to well-defined microstructures. The block copolymers are more thermally stable than that of the random copolymers. The degree of crystallinity of the bock copolymers is relatively high compared to that of the random copolymers. The image of the block copolymers determined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) shows partial aggregate domains containing spherical particles with an average diameter of around 200 nm, which is very different from that of the random copolymers. Block copolymers are more hydrophilic than that of the random copolymers due to the ordered structure and amphiphilic behavior of the block series. © 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Many people suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Nowadays, CKD is one of the top ten causes of death. CKD should via invasive examination to understand participants health status. If a non-invasive identification model can be established, it can provide users with self-assessment which let users quickly understand their physical condition. This study used machine learning method to establish an identification model of Chronic Kidney Disease. This study found the associated factors with kidney failure from the literature. Selected MJ database as information resources. Used two different factor selection methods to training model. Compared the performance with K-Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree, Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boosting and Vote Algorithms, used the better one to establish the model. In this study, the best model used Vote algorithm to establish the model, and can only use 13 non-invasive factors. The accuracy is 88%, the precision is 73%, the sensitivity is 69%, the specificity is 93%, and the AUC is 0.92. The contribution of this study is to use non-invasive factors to identify Chronic Kidney Disease, but it is a preliminary evaluation and ultimately requires doctors to diagnose. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In Taiwan, diseases with cardiovascular include heart disease and cerebrovascular disease among the top ten causes of death. With the development of data mining in the medical field, it can be used to establish the risk prediction models of disease as a tool to assist physicians in decision-making in diagnosis. The purpose of this study is taking Taiwanese health examination data as an example, to identify the significant risk factors of cardiovascular disease and to establish the risk assessment model of cardiovascular disease using data mining. Using Chi-square test and Information Gain identify the correlation between various factors and cardiovascular diseases. Using eight algorithms such as decision tree, random forest, XGBoost, neural network, logistic regression, support vector machine, K nearest neighbor algorithm and voting algorithm to establish the risk assessment model of cardiovascular disease and using confusion matrix and AUC as model evaluation. Compare model performance with different factor combinations. Experiment result shows that it finds 22 questionnaires and biochemical variable risk factors affecting cardiovascular disease and 10 questionnaire factors. ANN and VOTE with 22 factors of Information Gain (threshold > 0.01) are the best models. Both models have the same accuracy (0.88) and AUC (0.90). The best model of questionnaire variable is ANN with the accuracy rate is 0.89, and the AUC is 0.91. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Microplastics in wastewater and sludge from centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants: Effects of treatment systems and microplastic characteristics

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors

The past few years have witnessed significant progress in emerging disease detection techniques foraccurately and rapidly tracking rice diseases and predicting potential solutions. In this review we focuson image processing techniques using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models related tomulti-scale rice diseases. Furthermore, we summarize applications of different detection techniques,including genomic, physiological, and biochemical approaches. In addition, we also present the state-ofthe-art in contemporary optical sensing applications of pathogen–plant interaction phenotypes. Thisreview serves as a valuable resource for researchers seeking effective solutions to address the challenges of high-throughput data and model recognition for early detection of issues affecting rice cropsthrough ML and DL models.

Recently, discovering high-performance electrocatalytic materials for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) has been one of the most crucial tasks. This paper details the successful fabrication of a low-cost platelike bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) material through a simple one-step hydrothermal route, employed as an electrocatalyst to adorn graphite felt (GF) for use as the negative electrode in VRFBs. The experimental results show that BiVO4-3h exhibits the optimal electrocatalytic activity and reversibility for the vanadium redox couples among all samples. The energy efficiency of the VRFB cell assembled with BiVO4-decorated GF as the negative electrode is found to be 75.42% at 100 mA cm-2, which is about 10.24% more efficient than that of the cell assembled with a heat-treated graphite felt (HT-GF) electrode. The possible reasons for the activity enhancement can be ascribed to the existence of oxygen vacancies in the BiVO4 lattice structure and the relatively high surface area of BiVO4, which provide more active sites for facilitating the vanadium redox reactions. Furthermore, the BiVO4-GF electrode obstructs the competitive irreversible hydrogen evolution reaction on the negative side of the cell, and it also has better wettability. Impressively, BiVO4-GF as the negative electrode shows good stability over 100 cycles. © 2023 American Chemical Society.

In full-scale units, the real application of nanoparticles photocatalytic degradation is still challenging due to the requirement of post separation for recovery of fine particles. This work investigated the removal efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles coupling with graphene oxide (GO) sheets immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix via solution-casting and a heat-treatment process to achieve the TiO₂/GO/PVA nanocomposite film as a photocatalyst. The operative parameters were focused on initial solution pH value, GO concentration, and heat-treatment time, which subsequently determined the optimal indices for the catalyst film. The structure characterization of the Ti–O–C bond indicated that a strong interaction between GO and TiO₂ had been formed at the hydrolysis process while TiO₂/GO nanoparticles were chemically embedded in PVA matrix by the heat-treatment method. The photocatalytic degradation of PFOS and PFOA produced a nanocomposite film with 25 wt% TiO₂/GO that was treated at 120 °C for 3 h and exhibited a remarkable removal activity in acidic solution with a pH of 3. This condition efficiently degraded PFOS and PFOA by approximately 95.99 % and 96.89 %, respectively, through a photocatalytic reaction. This research presents a straightforward method to synthesize TiO₂/GO/PVA catalyst that influences persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under ultraviolet irradiation, which is of practical significance for environmental applications. © 2024 The Authors
