Recently, discovering high-performance electrocatalytic materials for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) has been one of the most crucial tasks. This paper successfully fabricates low-cost plate-like bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) material through a simple one-step hydrothermal route, employed as a novel electrocatalyst to adorn the graphite felt (GF) for use as the negative electrode in VRFB. The experimental results show that BiVO4-3h exhibits the optimal electrocatalytic activity and reversibility for the vanadium redox couples among all samples. The energy efficiency of the VRFB cell assembled with BiVO4-decorated GF as the negative electrode is found to be 75.42% at 100 mA cm−2, which is about 10.24% more efficient than that of the cell assembled with heat-treated graphite felt (HT-GF) electrode. The possible reasons for the activity enhancement can be ascribed to the existence of oxygen vacancies in the BiVO4 lattice structure and the relatively high surface area of BiVO4, which provide more active sites for facilitating the vanadium redox reactions. Furthermore, the BiVO4-GF electrode obstructs the competitive irreversible hydrogen evolution reaction on the negative side of the cell, and it also has better wettability. On the social and cognitive dimensions of wicked environmental problems characterized by conceptual and solution uncertainty

We develop a quantitative framework for understanding the class of wicked problems that emerge at the intersections of natural, social, and technological complex systems. Wicked problems reflect our incomplete understanding of interdependent global systems and the systemic risk they pose;such problems escape solutions because they are often ill-defined, and thus mis-identified and under-appreciated by communities of problem-solvers. While there are well-documented benefits to tackling boundary-crossing problems from various viewpoints, the integration of diverse approaches can nevertheless contribute confusion around the collective understanding of the core concepts and feasible solutions. We explore this paradox by analyzing the development of both scholarly (social) and topical (cognitive) communities - two facets of knowledge production studies here that contribute towards the evolution of knowledge in and around a problem, termed a knowledge trajectory - associated with three wicked problems: deforestation, invasive species, and wildlife trade. We posit that saturation in the dynamics of social and cognitive diversity growth is an indicator of reduced uncertainty in the evolution of the comprehensive knowledge trajectory emerging around each wicked problem. Informed by comprehensive bibliometric data capturing both social and cognitive dimensions of each problem domain, we thereby develop a framework that assesses the stability of knowledge trajectory dynamics as an indicator of wickedness associated with conceptual and solution uncertainty. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology that enables the treatment of high-salinity wastewater. To monitor the state and trends of MD technology for wastewater treatment, the patent filings from the last nine years were analyzed. A total of 72 documents with a special focus either on the membrane itself or on the equipment and process were found. China, United States and Japan play a leading role in the development of these technologies. Most of the inventions concentrating on the membrane apply polymers as the material. Inventions describing the equipment and process are mainly related to system and module design, but also cover the combination of MD with other technologies, the treatment customization to a specific type of wastewater, fouling control and cleaning, and energy recovery. Finally, enhancements in water flux and energy efficiency are found to be key factors to broaden the application of MD technology in wastewater treatment.

According to statistics of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (Taiwan) in 2016, the first of Top Ten causes of death was cancer. In this category, percentages of trachea, bronchus and lung cancer were the highest. Thus, it is particularly important to study the disease. Coverage rate of national health insurance in Taiwan is up to 99.6%. Database of the national health insurance includes insurance information of the public. It is currently the mostly complete, mature and continuous clinical medial empirical data. With precise data and sufficient samples, they become the most appropriate and precise data for prediction of effectiveness of clinical illness treatment and comorbidity analysis. This study focuses on non-small cell lung cancer. It obtains cancer registration files from two million files in database of national health insurance, and screens patients who have suffered from ICD C33-34 "trachea, bronchus and lung cancer". It then connects with OPDTE of outpatient services of national health insurance to include factors of comorbidity of disease in model design and treat DEATH as analytical figure after treatment and prognosis. By linear and non-linear data mining, it studies effects of different therapies on survival rate of lung cancer patients in three years and establishes prediction model. Through Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Logistic Regression (LR), this study successfully establishes prediction model of survival rate of treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. When the best point of LR model: Sensitivity = 77.3 and Specificity = 73.8, it includes 81% (AUROC, Area Under ROC curve) of model precision rate. When the best point of ANN model: Sensitivity = 77.6 and Specificity = 76.8, it can include 83% (AUROC) model precision rate. It shows that model precision rate of ANN is higher than logistic regression model. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

With advancements in the science of detection and attribution studies, the influence of climate change over many events has now been quantified. Because of the rapidly increasing temperatures, vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year of age) were exposed to 3·7 billion more heatwave days in 2021 than annually in 1986–2005 (indicator 1.1.2), and heat-related deaths increased by 68% between 2000–04 and 2017–21 (indicator 1.1.5), a death toll that was significantly exacerbated by the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the local cooling and overall health benefits of urban greenspaces, only 277 (27%) of 1038 global urban centres were at least moderately green in 2021 (indicator 2.2.3), and the number of households with air conditioning increased by 66% from 2000 to 2020, a maladaptive response that worsens the energy crisis and further increases urban heat, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Background: Recent studies have reported that air pollution is related to kidney diseases. However, the global evidence on the risk of death from acute kidney injury (AKI) owing to air pollution is limited. Therefore, we investigated the association between short-term exposure to air pollution—particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)—and AKI-related mortality using a multi-country dataset. Methods: This study included 41,379 AKI-related deaths in 136 locations in six countries during 1987–2018. A novel case time-series design was applied to each air pollutant during 0–28 lag days to estimate the association between air pollution and AKI-related deaths. Moreover, we calculated AKI deaths attributable to non-compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines. Results: The relative risks (95% confidence interval) of AKI-related deaths are 1.052 (1.003, 1.103), 1.022 (0.994, 1.050), and 1.022 (0.982, 1.063) for 5, 10, and 10 µg/m3 increase in lag 0–28 days of PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2, respectively. The lag-distributed association showed that the risk appeared immediately on the day of exposure to air pollution, gradually decreased, and then increased again reaching the peak approximately 20 days after exposure to PM2.5 and O3. We also found that 1.9%, 6.3%, and 5.2% of AKI deaths were attributed to PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2 concentrations above the WHO guidelines. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that public health policies to reduce air pollution may alleviate the burden of death from AKI and suggests the need to investigate the several pathways between air pollution and AKI death. © 2023 The Author(s)

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A virus infect the respiratory tract through surface proteins, causing similar symptoms. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, both viruses have posed significant ongoing global health threats. Like the influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2 evolves into variants that can reduce vaccine efficacy. Thus, herbal medicines are being explored as supplementary options to enhance protection against these infections. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of chlorogenic acid (3-CQA) and related extracts from green coffee beans and Echinacea purpurea against SARS-CoV-2 variants and H1N1 infection. The methods employed included an ELISA-based trimeric spike protein binding assay, viral infection assays, plaque assays, and molecular docking studies. Results showed that 3-CQA blocked spike protein/angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) binding for most SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, except the Delta variant. Extracts from Green coffee bean and E. purpurea effectively blocked all variants tested. Additionally, antibodies blocked spike protein binding up to Omicron BA.2. Molecular docking suggested that 3-CQA binding to Omicron BA.1, BA.2, and BA.4, though not to the Delta spike protein, may lead to steric hindrance, preventing receptor-binding domain interactions with ACE2. Finally, both 3-CQA and E. purpurea extract showed preventive effects against H1N1 viral infection, though with lower potency compared to SARS-CoV-2. In conclusion, 3-CQA has potential as a phytoconstituent marker for herbs with bioactive properties against SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 viral infections. © 2024 Center for Food and Biomolecules, National Taiwan University

This is the third special issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (JAFC) based on the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) technical program, at the 262nd American Chemical Society National Meeting. This was the first national meeting held in a hybrid format, both virtually and in-person in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., on August 22-26, 2021. The AGFD proudly hosted 12 symposia, including three award symposia. There were 34 sessions held in total, with 143 oral presentations and 49 poster presentations. This meeting was highly successful in terms of attendance, and technology issues experienced at the previous virtual meetings were successfully resolved.
