Unaddressed thermal issues can seriously hinder the development of reliable and low power systems. In this paper, we propose a statistical approach for analyzing thermal behavior under leakage power variations stemming from the manufacturing process. Based on the proposed models, we develop floorplanning techniques targeting thermal optimization. The experimental results show that peak temperature is reduced by up to 8.8°C, while thermal-induced leakage power and maximum thermal variance are reduced by 13% and 17%, respectively, with no additional area overhead compared with best performance-driven optimized design.

The crystal-field potential at the Er3+ ion surrounded by six oxygen ions is expanded in terms of polynomials. After converting it into equivalent angular momentum operators, the Stark-splitting of the 4I15/2 ground state of the Er3+ ion is calculated. Influence of the change in the environment of the Er3+ ion on the shift of the energy levels is investigated and compared with the observed Er photoluminescence spectrum in a-Si:H. The scattering of the calculated energy levels by the structural fluctuation around the Er3+ ion is also compared with the linewidth of the component photoluminescence lines.

Low frequency acoustic signals in shallow water are strongly affected by interference between multiple paths resulting from boundary interactions. As an acoustic source or receiver moves through this interference pattern, the spatial variation in transmission loss can result in strong temporal modulation of the received signal, which can be used to localize the source. Acoustic propagation models can produce accurate transmission loss predictions, but are sensitive to ocean environmental parameters such as bottom composition, bathymetry and sound speed profile. If the uncertainty in the undersea environment can be described by probability density functions of these parameters, Monte Carlo forward models can be used to produce an ensemble of possible transmission loss realizations. A probabilistic model representing this ensemble must include a density function of transmission loss at each location, as well as correlation of transmission loss between locations. In addition, the choice of probabilistic model has a large impact on the form of the resulting Bayesian localization algorithm. Previous results have shown that including spatial correlation of transmission loss can result in improved detection. This paper introduces a non-Gaussian probabilistic model for representing uncertainty in transmission loss predictions that includes correlation.

With the growing power consumption in modern high performance VLSI designs, nonuniform temperature distribution and limited heat-conduction capability have caused thermal induced performance and reliability degrad.tion. Electromigration is the main reliability concern and will become a more limiting factor of IC designs. It must be addressed together with a thermal reliability modeling. This issue also has been recognized in the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) 2002 update as one of the difficult challenges. Although the impacts of thermal effects on transistor and interconnect performance are well-studied, but still how thermal effects affect the reliability of power delivery is not very clear. As a result, traditional power-delivery designs without thermal consideration may cause soft-error, reliability degrad.tion, and even premature chip failures. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for power-delivery networks optimization with thermal reliability integrity. By considering thermal and power integrity, we are able to achieve high power supply quality and thermal reliability. For a 56 × 72 mesh, our design shows that the lifetime of the optimized ground network is 9.8 years. Whereas the lifetime of the ground network designed by a traditional method without thermal integrity is only 4.1 years.
