With the growing power dissipation in modern high performance VLSI designs, nonuniform temperature distribution and limited heat-conduction capability have caused thermal induced performance and reliability degrad.tion. However, the problem modeled by finite difference method for interconnect reliability analysis has huge size if we require the resolution with wire width. In addition, the generated lumped circuit has significant number of input sources, and the bottleneck of traditional model reduction methods is the big number of input ports. In this paper, we propose a method of SPICE-compatible thermal simulation for interconnect reliability analysis. The lumped thermal circuit modeling with adaptive approach is used to reduce the problem size. The improved extended Krylov subspace(IEKS) method, independent of the number of input ports, is used for thermal simulation. The experimental results show that our method provides highly accurate results with performance improvement 15 × over T-Spice for the problem with node number 72428.

In order to map the spectral characteristics of the large variety of sounds a musical instrument may produce, different notes were performed and sampled in several intensity levels across the whole extension of a clarinet. Amplitude and frequency time-varying curves of partials were measured by Discrete Fourier Transform. A limited set of orthogonal spectral bases was derived by Principal Component Analysis techniques. These bases defined spectral sub-spaces capable of representing all tested sounds and of grouping them according to the distance metrics of the representation. A clustering algorithm was used to infer timbre classes. Preliminary tests with resynthesized sounds with normalized pitch showed a strong relation between the perceived timbre and the cluster label to which the notes were assigned. Self-Organizing Maps lead to results similar to those obtained by PCA representation and Kmeans clustering algorithm. © 2004 Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Improving logic capacity by time-sharing, dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs are employed to handle designs of high complexity and functionality. In this paper, we model each task as a 3D-box and deal with the temporal floorplanning/placement problem for dynamically reconfigurable FPGA architectures. We present a tree-based data structure, called T-trees, to represent the spatial and temporal relations among tasks. Each node in a T-tree has at most three children which represent the dimensional relationship among tasks. For the T-tree, we develop an efficient packing method and derive the condition to ensure the satisfaction of precedence constraints which model the temporal ordering among tasks induced by the execution of dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs. Experimental results show that our tree-based formulation can achieve significantly better solution quality with less execution time than the most recent state-of-the-art work. ©2004 IEEE.

Improving logic capacity by time-sharing, dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs are employed to handle designs of high complexity and functionality. In this paper, we use a novel topological floorplan representation, named 3D-subTCG (3-Dimensional sub-Transitive Closure Graph) to deal with the 3-dimensional (temporal) floorplanning/placement problem, arising from dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs. The 3D-subTCG uses three transitive closure graphs to model the temporal and spatial relations between modules. We derive the feasibility conditions for the precedence constraints induced by the execution of the dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs. Because the geometric relationship is transparent to 3D-subTCG and its induced operations, we can easily detect any violation of temporal precedence constraints on 3D-subTCG. We also derive important properties of the 3D-subTCG to reduce the solution space and shorten the running time for 3D (temporal) foorplanning/placement. Experimental results show that our 3D-subTCG based algorithm is very effective and efficient.

One of the phenomena that affect the water loss in newborn infants is the humidity. The evaporation is determined by the vapour partial pressure. As well as temperature control, the reduction of the vapour partial pressure oscillations has an important role in the establishment of thermal comfort for newborn infants in incubators. This work presents an algorithm based on multiple models to water vapour partial pressure control. The tests have been made in an acrylic prototype simulating a commercial incubator. The results shows that the implemented control algorithm presents oscillations minor to ±0.08 kPa.

The authors consider the switch-block design problem for three-dimensional FPGAs. A three-dimensional switch block M with W terminals on each face is said to be universal if every set of nets satisfying the dimension constraint (i.e. the number of nets on each face of M is at most W) is simultaneously routable through M. A class of universal switch blocks for three-dimensional FPGAs is presented. Each of the switch blocks has 15W switches and switch-block flexibility 5 (i.e. FS=5). It is proved that no switch block with less than 15W switches can be universal. The proposed switch blocks are compared with others of the topology associated with those used in the Xilinx XC4000 FPGAs. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed universal switch blocks improve routabilty at the chip level. Further, the decomposition property of a universal switch block provides a key insight into its layout implementation with a smaller silicon area.

Emerging of Capability Maturity Model (CMM) triggered the evolution of software developing process. Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), the new version of CMM, was introduced in 2001 with highly expectation in improving performance of software organizations. Researches indicated ISO 9001 and CMMI have many things in common. Organizations acquired ISO 9001 certifications should be able to save some efforts in pursuing CMMI. This paper analyzes the similarity between ISO 9001 and CMMI.

In this paper, we define and study a novel text mining problem, which we refer to as Comparative Text Mining (CTM). Given a set of comparable text collections, the task of comparative text mining is to discover any latent common themes across all collections as well as summarize the similarity and differences of these collections along each common theme. This general problem subsumes many interesting applications, including business intelligence and opinion summarization. We propose a generative probabilistic mixture model for comparative text mining. The model simultaneously performs cross-collection clustering and withincollection clustering, and can be applied to an arbitrary set of comparable text collections. The model can be estimated efficiently using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. We evaluate the model on two different text data sets (i.e., a news article data set and a laptop review data set), and compare it with a baseline clustering method also based on a mixture model. Experiment results show that the model is quite effective in discovering the latent common themes across collections and performs significantly better than our baseline mixture model.

This paper focuses on implementation issues of a virtual environment to support the interaction with a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), which is used to measure dimensions and form of mechanical parts. First, it gives an overview of the implementation, presenting the software "Avalon" and the basic architecture of the developed application. Then, it describes the execution environment, including the description of equipments and devices, characteristics and constraints, and system execution. Finally, it presents the conclusions of the work.

Many new services have emerged to realize ubiquitous computing environments, owing to the increasing supply of mobile devices and more widespread Internet and wireless network facilities. This paper introduces the U-Campus (Ubiquitous computing for Campus) service. This study has been conducted through interdisciplinary research by four participating departments. The U-Campus Project is part of the UTOPIA project (Ubiquitous computing TOwn Project: Intelligent context Awareness), which covers town- and city-wide environments. Currently, a test bed for U-Campus has been constructed to support various services such as U-Profile, U-Messaging and U-Campus Tour Guide services. Students, professors, school staffs, and campus visitors can easily access the various available campus services by using image-based sensors and mobile devices such as CDMA cellular phones or WiFi smart phones. The major purpose of this research is to provide a context-aware U-Campus environment to users by utilizing sensors and mobile devices currently available in the public sector and the marketplace.
