We apply the chaos supremacy of laser chaos system to the high stabilization of THz waves. Stability was demonstrated by down converting the optical beats between laser longitudinal modes in the THz domain to the radio frequency domain and comparing a conventional free running CW laser diode to a chaotically oscillating laser diode. Because of their exceptional stability, chaotically oscillating lasers are attractive options for optical pump sources in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy systems. © 2023 IEEE.

This study aims to delineate the origin, purpose, process, and results of the research, focusing on investigating the impact of different exterior wall materials on outdoor thermal indicators in Nagoya, Japan. The ultimate goal is to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and improve urban outdoor thermal comfort. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is employed to evaluate two types of exterior wall materials: diffuse highly reflective (DHR) and retro-reflective (RR) materials. The research process involves assessing various outdoor thermal indices, such as wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT), standard effective temperature (SET*), and universal thermal climate index (UTCI), in order to comprehend the thermal performance of each material. The results of the study indicate that the RR material consistently outperforms the DHR material in terms of outdoor thermal comfort, despite having slightly lower solar reflectance. This is supported by lower surface temperatures and surface heat flow associated with the RR material, suggesting reduced indoor cooling loads and significant energy savings for cooling purposes. These findings highlight the potential of RR material in mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban outdoor thermal conditions. By establishing a critical relationship between exterior wall materials and outdoor thermal indicators, this study proposes the adoption of RR materials for urban building exteriors as a sustainable and economically viable solution to improve urban outdoor thermal comfort and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Al doping into 4H-SiC performed by irradiating pulse-width-expanded excimer laser to an Al film deposited on the 4H-SiC surface is investigated. An optical pulse stretcher was constructed to produce the laser pulse whose peak intensity was reduced as half as that of the original pulse and pulse width was expanded from 55 ns to 100 ns. The irradiation of the expanded pulses is found to reduce the ablation of the materials from the surface and enable irradiation of multiple shots. As a result, Al doping depth is significantly increased. The multiple shots of the expanded pulses are also found to decrease the sensitivity to spatial non-uniformity of laser intensity and increase the uniformity of doped region. © 2019 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

The recent success in human action recognition with deep learning methods mostly adopt the supervised learning paradigm, which requires significant amount of manually labeled data to achieve good performance. However, label collection is an expensive and time-consuming process. In this work, we propose an unsupervised learning framework, which exploits unlabeled data to learn video representations. Different from previous works in video representation learning, our unsupervised learning task is to predict 3D motion in multiple target views using video representation from a source view. By learning to extrapolate cross-view motions, the representation can capture view-invariant motion dynamics which is discriminative for the action. In addition, we propose a view-adversarial training method to enhance learning of view-invariant features. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the learned representations for action recognition on multiple datasets.

A cloud-based digital map has emerged as one of core enabling features for future automated driving. A cloud infrastructure for such digital maps must orchestrate vehicles, cloud servers and the connectivity infrastructure in collecting, analyzing, synthesizing and transferring the huge amount of digital map data. Since advanced driving features for future connected vehicles are often safety-critical, a data analytics framework for cloud-based digital maps inherits the same type of requirements. Unfortunately, due to the non-deterministic latencies of the wide area network, existing data analytics frameworks deployed on the current cloud infrastructure are not eligible for our purpose. In this paper, we propose a new real-time data analytics framework that guarantees the timeliness requirements for supporting cloud-based digital maps. We start with discussing a new computing model that exploits the computing resources of an edge node as well as those of a cloud server. We name it cloud edge computing where data communications between an edge node and a cloud server are avoided as much as possible by caching a geospatial subset of the global map data at an edge node. The proposed framework that runs on the cloud edge computing architecture has four crucial components. They cooperate to generate the up-to-date map data and deliver it to a moving vehicle in real-time. We also investigate two technical challenges that arise in dealing with the huge amount of digital map data. © 2016, FISITA. All rights reserved.

Accurate extraction of solder bumps in radiographs is a key factor in improving device quality. The conventional method, X-ray-energy subtraction, needs detailed research to determine parameters by numerous experiments and rich human experience. The parameters, however, are not published and are thus not considered general-purpose. Two automated methods were implemented with blind-source separation. The experimentation showed our proposed method using an algorithm called QL1-NMF automatically extracts solder bumps from radiographs well.

Previously, we developed a nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithm named QL1-NMF that is based on minimizing the quasi-L1 norm of an error matrix. When the data includes many outliers, the QL1-NMF algorithm returns better results than ISRA, which is one of the basic NMF algorithms. However, the update functions in the QL1-NMF algorithm are based on a differential function with distortion. Moreover, the solutions it provides sometimes diverge to infinity. The method therefore required improvement to enable it to produce more accurate analysis. In the work described in this paper, we replaced its update functions with others that were based on a simple differential function without distortion. We also contrived ways to implement adjustment factors into the update functions. computer simulation results confirm the revised algorithm works better than the previous one.

In this paper, we present an image-based 3D positioning method by using produced motion blur for a novel camera-based indoor navigation system. This system, avoiding adopting any expensive equipment, could provide exact 3D location and orientation for mobile users. High-intensity LED tube, which is expected to be the next generation of illumination source, is used as optical marker in this system. LED tubes are modulated to transmit ID information and the message is received by handy terminal which is equipped with one normal camera. The exposure time of a common camera is usually longer than flicker period of LED lamps, and this makes difficulties for ID recognition. We study a method to solve this problem. If camera is shaken by user's hand while the period of exposure, on captured image a streaked pattern would be produced and that could be used for retrieving ID number. Result of experiment shows this method is feasible.

In this paper, we present a new method that represents an overall musical time-varying impression of a song by a pair of mood trajectories estimated from lyrics and audio signals. The mood trajectory of the lyrics is obtained by using the probabilistic latent semantic analysis (PLSA) to estimate topics (representing impressions) from words in the lyrics. The mood trajectory of the audio signals is estimated from acoustic features by using the multiple linear regression analysis. In our experiments, the mood trajectories of 100 songs in ***'s Best of 2010 were estimated. The detailed analysis of the 100 songs confirms that acoustic features provide more accurate mood trajectory and the 21% resulting mood trajectories are matched to realistic musical mood available at ***. © 2011 ACM.
