Through the analyses of several educational softwares we noticed the need of improving group development in such environments, considering the students socio-cognitive development and the dynamic of group work. The present article presents some aspects to be considered when planning and developing learning virtual/digital environments.

She has been studying aspects of language communication and culture on the Internet since 1991. Her interests include the nature and implications of playfulness in digital communication consequences of the loss of the text as material object in computerized communication the new media and the future of performativity email and the history of letter-writing gender play and performance on the Internet and virtual theatre. During the 1996-97 academic year she is on sabbatical at the Center for Folklife Programs & Cultural Studies The Smithsonian Institution Washington DC where she is working on a book Keybo@rd K@perz: Play Culture and Communication in the Early Digital Age. Lucia Ruedenerg-Wright became interested in online communications while completing her Ph.D. in Performance Studies at New York University. After a postdoctoral year at the Dept. of Behavioral Sciences Ben Gurion University in BeerSheva Israel she began to teach Internet skills and issues in the Dept. of Education Ben Gurion University and in the Dept. of Communication & Journalism The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition she participated in the founding of the Ramat-Negev Freenet in the northern Negev Desert and has researched its impact on residents of the region. Currently she is Webmaster for the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University and teaches an Internet course remotely via the Internet at Ben Gurion University Department of Education. Digital writing is strikingly playful. This playfulness flourishes particularly in synchronous chat modes on the Internet. This paper is a study of writing, play and performance on IRC (Internet Relay Chat). We analyze a “virtual party” on IRC, whose highlight was a typed simulation of smoking marihuana. Three interrelated, yet analytically distinct types of play are discussed: 1) play with identity; 2) play with frames of interaction; and 3) play with typographic symbols. We adopt a qualitative, textual, and micro-sociolinguistic approach, drawing on work in discourse analysis, the study of orality and literacy, and the anthropology of play and performance. In all play there is reduced accountability for action. In the material world, masks and costumes at carnival time liberate participants; here, the ephemeral, non-material medium, the typed text, and the use of nicknames provide the mask. Although the improvisation analyzed here is typed and occurs between geographically dispersed strangers, it has fascinating affinities with “live” interactional forms such as jazz, charades, and carnivals.

Big companies in the Information Technology (IT) industry have been increasingly distributing on a world scale their software development units to countries in Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America through offshore development centers. This is a strategy to increase competitiveness and reduce costs. In this context, emerging countries, like Brazil and its initiatives focused on the development of hardware and software industry, have become an attractive option to receive investments in the IT sector. This paper analyzes the major factors that have attracted foreign IT companies to investment in Brazil. The challenges of keeping these investments in the country are also analyzed. This study is an exploratory case study based on the concrete experience of implementation of an offshore software development center, belonging to Dell Inc., in Brazil. © 2003 John Wiley & Sons.

This paper intends to describe the design process related to an algorithms and programming environment to support the beginner's learning process. The system has a set of tools and functionalities, and agent named AMIGO to help the teacher to organize student's information. The agent's tasks are: collects student profile information, and to organize the tasks related to student's activities and evaluation process. The system framework has a uphold methodology that justify and gives support to the choice made during our design process. We do not intend to show experimental results. We claim that we can build educational environments taking advantages from agents technology, and a mixed methodology based on presential and virtual classes. We believe it is not possible to create good and helpful educational software without those premises.

Human systems integration and advanced technology in engineering department workload and manpower reduction

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

It is believed that for the newly blind, to use large size Braille is more effective than to use that of standard size in practising Braille recognition. On the other hand, it may be preferable to use small size Braille for young blind children. Taking account of these facts, we have developed a "size-variable Braille printing system", which can produce Braille of arbitrary size on swell paper (micro-capsule paper). Our system takes, as input data, the same input data as that for Braille printers and produces a LATEX file to typeset Braille image as output data. This system can be applied to more general representations of Braille text since it is possible to draw symbols other than Braille on the paper. In this research, two-dimensional expression of fractions in Braille is presented. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

One of the major issues in the Internet is the quality control for network system usability. To improve network system quality of service, system administrators should evaluate how their systems are working, and should operate their systems to perform users' requests and optimize performance. To manage network system performance, it is important for administrators to be aware of system usability factors such as access delay, processing time and data transfer throughput. Several ways to measure network performance have been developed. However, performance management is still difficult because of the lack of effective tools to evaluate network system usability. The goal of our work is to develop a new quality evaluation system for network system usability. In our approach, we measure system usability and performance through mechanisms installed in the clients. The purpose of our system is to make clear the behavior of the client applications, and allows us to measure system performance for system usability. We describe the fundamental concept for client observation and its performance indices, and the design and implementation of the performance evaluation system through observation. Also, we confirm the effectiveness of our system through experiments.

This paper concerns the decentralized design for a MIMO system. The decentralized design means the design of the combination of a pre-compensator and decentralized controllers. An advantage of this idea is that we can regard the decentralized controllers as SISO controllers, if the pre-compensator sufficiently decouples the plant. As a result, it is easy to comprehend the relationship between the controllers and specifications. However, it may occur that the structural restriction of the decentralized controllers results in a poorer performance than a centralized controller. This paper shows that the decentralized design proposed realizes a performance equal to the centralized one in the mixed sensitivity problem based on certain assumptions.

This paper proposes a method for measuring semantic similarity between words as a new tool for text analysis. The similarity is measured on a semantic network constructed systematically from a subset of the English dictionary, LDOCE {Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). Spreading activation on the network can directly compute the similarity between any two words in the Longman Defining Vocabulary, and indirectly the similarity of all the other words in LDOCE. The similarity represents the strength of lexical cohesion or semantic relation, and also provides valuable information about similarity and coherence of texts. © 6th Conference of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics, EACL 1993 - Proceedings.
