The capacity to deceptively move in hilly terrains is fundamental to agents in simulation systems for tactical and strategic military training. Such an ability to deceive the adversary can ensure a relevant advantage by hiding the real goals of a mission. Using pairs of real and deceptive mission goals, this paper investigates the planning of realistic deceptive routes for simulated agents. With real-world terrain elevation maps, it shows how to explore pathfinding algorithms with relevant path-smoothing characteristics (Theta* and WJPS*, contrasting with the standard $A^{*}$ algorithm) in terrains with pronounced relief features. The study analyzes the effects of terrain elevation costs and the representation of relief contour lines on the determination of more realistic deceptive paths. This work also investigates how users can adjust a Last Topographic Deceptive Point ($L D P_{T}$) calculation to enhance the pathfinding algorithm’s ability to produce more deceptively dense and topographically aware routes. Experimental results for different deceptive topographic path planning strategies are evaluated according to statistical models showing that Theta*, despite being slower than the base $A^{*}$ method in most cases, generated smoothed paths while maintaining a similar deception density for the proposed strategies. On the other hand, WJPS outperformed both in execution time for certain strategies while maintaining the smoothed path characteristic and resulting in a path with lower deceptive capacity.

Magnetic nanoparticles are developed for the biomedical applications such as hyperthermia and magnetic particle imaging. Magnetic relaxation determines the performance of magnetic nanoparticles in these applications. The magnetic relaxation was divided into two types as the Néel relaxation and Brown relaxations. In this research, the magnetization response associated with the Néel relaxation was observed by applying a pulse magnetic field in magnetic nanoparticles of the multicore structure. The measured Neel relaxation were roughly divided into fast and slow responses. The slow response was dominant compared to the fast part, which is consistent with the distribution of the particle core size of measured magnetic nanoparticles. Elucidating the Néel relaxation time of magnetic nanoparticles guide the design of particles suitable for the biomedical applications and determines the optimal magnetic field conditions.

To develop the biomedical application using magnetic nanoparticles, the magnetization properties associated with the magnetic relaxation with respect to magnetic nanoparticles internalized into cells were important. In this study, magnetization properties of magnetic nanoparticles internalized into the cultured adherent cells were measured by evaluating harmonic intensities derived from the magnetization response, which were compared to the magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in liquid and fixed with epoxy resin. In particular, the nano-volt harmonic signals were obtained in intracellular magnetic nanoparticles. It is indicated that the particle aggregation reduced the magnetization, and the particle physical rotation was inhibited in the intracellular environment.

Visual place recognition using 3D lidar in robotics is a popular research topic. Feature representation descriptors, such as scan-context descriptors, which are 2D descriptors obtained from 3D point clouds, are one of the research directions with great in-depth research value. This paper proposes a new method to improve the robot visual place recognition method based on scan-context descriptors. Our approach focuses on using a combination of loss functions and optimizers to improve the accuracy and robustness of the recognition system. Specifically, we introduce a custom loss function that encourages the network to learn more discriminative features and a Heun optimizer that enables faster and more stable convergence during training. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct experiments on the NCLT benchmark dataset. The results show that our method outperforms some existing methods in terms of recognition accuracy and computational efficiency. Our proposed method provides a promising solution for improving robot place recognition, which has significant implications for a wide range of robotic applications, including autonomous navigation, mapping, and localization. © 2024, CC BY.

This innovative practice full paper presents an inter-disciplinary Project-Based Learning (IPBL) approach that relies on a challenge as a key part of the learning process. A project is proposed to the students from the perspective of creating a direct association between learning and doing. In this paper, we present a variation of PBL adding the interdisciplinary factor: we united students from different areas (digital games and music production) under the common objective of producing a complete sounded digital game. An additional difficulty was overcome since all classes took place remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To accomplish this challenge, a remote structure of classes was created to facilitate interaction between students as much as possible. During one semester, 2 groups of undergraduates from these two areas studied different modules organized in parallel under the general objective of an integrative project. The integrated project spanned 17 weeks, with classes structured to accommodate the evolving needs of project development. Initially, the first three weeks operated independently, allowing for focused exploration within each module. Subsequently, collaborative efforts were emphasized during weeks 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, and 15, fostering synergy and collective progress across both domains. Game students were given the mission of producing a game from scratch. To music production students the mission was making a full package of sound and music to each respective game. Facing a common schedule, all students had periodic meetings to align production and deadlines. In the end 10 games were produced and sounded. Initial hypotheses were raised about what we expected because of this experience. To assist in the analysis of the results, all the students involved responded to surveys about what they experienced. The successes and the need for improvements observed are detailed in this paper based on the application of the proposed methodology during the period

This paper proposes a novel grid-connected inverter with LCL filters applied to IRM-ILQ (Inverse Reference Model - Inverse Linear Quadratic) control strategy. The IRM, which is feed-forward control, allows for realizing the fast response to current control without delay. The ILQ control gives an analytical solution for optimal control, and response speed in the closed-loop system is controlled. The IRM-ILQ control method simultaneously provides target tracking and error convergence, basically the IRM-ILQ control is the two-degree of freedom control. Owing to it, it can suppress surge current less than 58.6% during momentary power failure and make power factor keep unity even when command current value changes. The proposed grid-connected inverter is confirmed current tracking and an impressive adaptability to varying amplitude and phase of current by numerical simulations.

The indoor positioning system is used to determine the location of people or objects in an enclosed space. It can be used in many applications such as navigation or even active marketing to provide a better experience to customers. There are various solutions to perform indoor localization. In this paper, the focus is on the use of Bluetooth Low Energy beacons to determine the position of the customer or object in the room. Therefore, the goal of this work is to use low-cost HM-10 BLE boards to test their accuracy and use as beacons. After collecting and analyzing the data, it was determined that HM-10 is a viable solution for beacons. When using the log-distance path loss model to determine distance, the experiments show variations between different HM-10 boards, suggesting the need for calibration to obtain more accurate results.

Nowadays we are experiencing a way of life that never existed before. The pandemic has sharply changed our habits, customs, and behavior. In addition, a lot of work was suddenly requested for city managers challenging them to develop strategies to try stopping the pandemic progression. Urban environments must be dynamic and managers need fast decisions when working on crisis situations. In this paper we present LODUS, a framework able to simulate urban environments on a multi-level approach, combining macro and micro simulation information in order to provide accurate information about population dynamics. Furthermore, the framework LODUS is a powerful tool when performing an urban viability study, since the simulation results are able to highlight and predict attention points prior to an urban environment to be built. © 2022, CC BY.

Cloud Computing is a technology widely used in academia and industry, providing varied services on demand. Blockchain technology was developed initially for the creation of a crypto-currency and nowadays is being exploited for several other applications, such as health, agriculture, IoT and education. Some work initiatives are already taking place with the integration of these two technologies, either for research or for cloud service provision. This article aims to present a preliminary discussion on some aspects of integration between blockchain and cloud computing. Contributions of this paper include: (i) presentation of two integrated commercial cloud computing and blockchain environments; and (ii) some research opportunities on the use of both environments.

Generally, a position detector has been used to drive the Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (SPMSM), because the current and voltage must be controlled according to the magnetic pole position of the rotor. However, using a position detector causes problems such as more expensive and lower reliability due to position detector failure. Therefore, the speed sensor-less control, which estimates the magnetic pole position from voltage and current without using a position detector, is required. Harmonic components in the output voltage waveform of the PWM inverter used to drive the SPMSM can cause problems such as Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Harmonic components can be suppressed by using an LC filter. In addition, IRM-ILQ control, which combines modern control theory's Inverse Linear Quadratic (ILQ) control and Inverse Reference Model (IRM), can achieve stable and robust SPMSM drive despite with LC filter. In this paper, robustness of speed sensorless control based on IRM-ILQ current control for SPMSM with active LC filter is described. In simulation, the proposed method allows stable control even when there are parameter errors.
