Breast cancer is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate among women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel therapies to effectively treat this disease. In this study, iron selenide nanorods (FeSe2 NRs) were designed for use in magnetic hyperthermic, photothermal, and chemodynamic therapy (MHT/PTT/CDT) for breast cancer. To illustrate their efficacy, FeSe2 NRs were modified with the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX). MTX-modified FeSe2 (FeSe2-MTX) exhibited excellent controlled drug release properties. Fe2+ released from FeSe2 NRs induced the release of •OH from H2O2 via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, enhancing the efficacy of CDT. Under alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation and 808 nm laser irradiation, FeSe2-MTX exerted potent hyperthermic and photothermal effects by suppressing tumor growth in a breast cancer nude mouse model. In addition, FeSe2 NRs can be used for magnetic resonance imaging in vivo by incorporating their superparamagnetic characteristics into a single nanomaterial. Overall, we presented a novel technique for the precise delivery of functional nanosystems to tumors that can enhance the efficacy of breast cancer treatment. © 2024 The Authors. Contract-Inspired Contest Theory for Controllable Image Generation in Mobile Edge Metaverse

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

The 5-level tone value labeling system helps characterize pitch contours of syllables for L2 Mandarin learners and teachers to facilitate tone acquisition and tone error analysis, respectively. In the past, linguistic experts did the tone value labeling and initially used it to represent or analyze the pitch contours of monosyllables. Some L2 Mandarin teachers also used the tone value labeling system to analyze pitch contours of continuous speech and illustrate pitch realizations for L2 Mandarin learners. However, the pitch contours of the labeled tone values of continuous speech were rarely objectively measured or analyzed. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of tone values of a continuous read speech corpus uttered by six Romance L2 Mandarin learners. The pitch contours of the tone value classes were explored, and some experiments related to the automatic recognition of tone and tone value classes were reported. We expect the results reported by this study to shed light on the development of an automatic tone value classification mechanism, which will be used in computer-assisted pronunciation training for L2 learners in the future.

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) has recently made significant advancement as a key material for electronic component design owing to its compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technologies. A comprehensive analysis of reliability-related issues is required to determine the true potential of a-IGZO-based devices for next-generation electronics applications. To address this objective, we electrically characterize scaled-channel a-IGZO thin film transistors (TFTs) under positive bias (temperature) stress (PB(T)S). Both PBS and PBTS are characterized by positive and negative V_th shift, respectively, during the various gate stresses. In particular, the negative V_th shift is explained by the generation of donor-like traps stimulated by ionization of oxygen vacancy/hydrogen at elevated temperature. The TFTs exhibit relatively decent stability during the PBS operation. The analysis of devices with variant channel dimensions implies that long-channel devices exhibit relatively higher stability and performance compared to the short-channel ones. We also observe that the V_th can be controllably adjusted by employing the top gate (TG) with bottom gate sweep. Moreover, the stress-induced partial recovery mechanism is experimentally observed owing to detrapping of charges. Generally, the reported results infer a perceptive understanding of scaled-channel a-IGZO-TFTs which helps with shaping performance-enhancement strategies. © 2024 The Author(s). Speech synthesis has been successfully exploited for mapping from text sequence to speech waveform where high-resource languages have been well studied and learned from a large amount of text-speech paired data in public-domain corpora. However, developing speech synthesis under low-resource languages is challenging for speech communication in local regions since the collection of training data is expensive. In particular, the speaker-aware speech generation under low-resource settings is crucial in real world. Such a problem is increasingly difficult in case of very limited speaker-specific data. This paper presents a speaker-aware speech synthesis under low-resource settings based on an encoder-decoder framework by using transformer. Knowledge transfer is performed by incorporating a speaker-aware embedding through first learning a pretrained transformer from multi-speaker data of a low-populated spoken language and then fine-tuning the transformer to a target speaker with very limited speaker-specific embeddings. Experiments on low-resource Taiwanese speech synthesis are evaluated to show the merit of speaker-aware transformer in terms of Mel cepstral distortion and mean opinion score.

Automatic liver tumor detection from computed tomography (CT) makes clinical examinations more accurate. However, deep learning-based detection algorithms are characterized by high sensitivity and low precision, which hinders diagnosis given that false-positive tumors must first be identified and excluded. These false positives arise because detection models incorrectly identify partial volume artifacts as lesions, which in turn stems from the inability to learn the perihepatic structure from a global perspective. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel slice-fusion method in which mining the global structural relationship between the tissues in the target CT slices and fusing the features of adjacent slices according to the importance of the tissues. Furthermore, we design a new network based on our slice-fusion method and Mask R-CNN detection model, called Pinpoint-Net. We evaluated proposed model on the Liver Tumor Segmentation Challenge (LiTS) dataset and our liver metastases dataset. Experiments demonstrated that our slice-fusion method not only enhance tumor detection ability via reducing the number of false-positive tumors smaller than 10mm, but also improve segmentation performance. Without bells and whistles, a single Pinpoint-Net showed outstanding performance in liver tumor detection and segmentation on LiTS test dataset compared with other state-of-the-art models. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

In the digital transformation era, Metaverse offers a fusion of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and web technologies to create immersive digital experiences. However, the evolution of the Metaverse is slowed down by the challenges of content creation, scalability, and dynamic user interaction. Our study investigates an integration of Mixture of Experts (MoE) models with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) for mobile edge computing to revolutionize content creation and interaction in the Metaverse. Specifically, we harness an MoE model's ability to efficiently manage complex data and complex tasks by dynamically selecting the most relevant experts running various sub-models to enhance the capabilities of GAI. We then present a novel framework that improves video content generation quality and consistency, and demonstrate its application through case studies. Our findings underscore the efficacy of MoE and GAI integration to redefine virtual experiences by offering a scalable, efficient pathway to harvest the Metaverse's full potential. © 2024, CC BY.

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a pivotal genetic marker influencing the efficacy of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer. Traditional MSI examination often requires additional genetic or immunohistochemical tests, whereas histology images, widely available in colorectal cancer diagnosis, offer a valuable alternative for MSI prediction. Although Transformer-based models have demonstrated promising outcomes in predicting MSI from histology images, they are hampered by traditional local attention mechanisms that struggle to capture long-range interdependencies and establish a comprehensive global receptive field. In this study, we introduce DiNAT-MSI, a novel framework for histology-based MSI prediction that incorporates the Dilated Neighborhood Attention Transformer (DiNAT). This model enhances global context recognition and substantially expands receptive fields, all without additional computational burden. Our results demonstrate that DiNAT-MSI achieves a superior patientwise AUROC compared to ResNet18 and Swin Transformer, along with commendable explainability. Our work not only illustrates a more accessible diagnostic tool for leveraging histological data but also underscores the potential of Transformerbased models with sophisticated attention designs in advancing precision medicine for colorectal cancer patients.

Device degradation due to hot carrier injection (HCI) in multi-fin 20 nm and 10 nm N- and P-type FinFET devices are thoroughly analyzed. To further understand the HCI reliability of the four FinFET devices, the device is fabricated with a standard Vt base and low Vt base gate stacks with different work functions. It is evident that: (i) The standard Vt device sustains lower effective stress bias due to the difference in threshold voltage, resulting in a more stable threshold voltage than the low Vt base device, and (ii) the transconductance of the single N- and P-type FinFET is more severely degraded than the multi-fin N- and P-type FinFET, mainly because multi N- and P-type Finfet has coupe effect, which effectively reduces the impact of HCI. © 2023 The Electrochemical Society ("ECS"). The fabrication of InGaN-based blue 4✕4 array micro-LEDs (μLEDs) with 40 μm ✕40 μm chip size and 2✕2 array μLEDs with 80 μm ✕80 μm chip size etching by the inductive coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICPRIE) and defect-free neutral beam etching (NBE) processes was studied in this work. In μLEDs of this size, the influence of defects formation in the sidewalls on EQE was evaluated. There was almost no difference in EQE between μLEDs array etched by the NBE process no matter 40 μm ✕40 μm and 80 μm ✕80 μm, but the dependence was observed in the ICPRIE. Even with this size, it was found that the size effect of EQE is smaller than that in case of using ICPRIE for defect-free neutral beam etching. This impact is substantial since μLED predominantly operated at low current density, around 1–5 A/cm2. Consequently, the reduction of defect density, encompassing both internal and sidewall defects, becomes imperative even in 40–80 μm InGaN-based μLEDs. This not only improves the overall efficiency of μLEDs but also fortifies the brightness stability of μLED displays if process etching by NBE. It was also found that the etching shape had an influence on EQE. It could be attributed to fact that the etching profile angle of NBE was more vertical than that of ICPRIE. Because the different angles of the mesa resulted in different light intensity. The μLEDs emitting with a wavelength of 450 nm, the light extraction efficiency and intensity at a mesa angle 58° of NBE etching μLEDs was about 8% lower than those of an angle (38°) of ICPRIE etching μLEDs by simulation. © The Authors
