The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is a promising algorithm for finding the ground states of a given Hamiltonian. Its application to binary-formulated combinatorial optimization (CO) has been intensively studied in recent years. However, typical VQE approaches for CO problems often suffer from local minima or barren plateaus, limiting their ability to achieve optimal solutions. The quantum imaginary time evolution (QITE) offers an alternative approach for effective ground-state preparation but requires large circuits to approximate non-unitary operations. Although compressed QITE (cQITE) reduces circuit depth, accumulated errors eventually cause energy increases. To address these challenges, we propose an Adaptive Weighted QITE-VQE (AWQV) algorithm that integrates the VQE gradients with the cQITE updates through an adaptive weighting scheme during optimization. In numerical experiments of MaxCut on unweighted regular graphs, AWQV achieves near-optimal approximation ratios, while for weighted ErdősRényi instances, it outperforms the classical Goemans-Williamson algorithm. © 2025, CC BY.

The US Consensus bureau estimated the total construction spending at 1,320,305 Million Dollars, in February 2020, with an increase of 1.1% since last February. The construction market is large, and risky. Prediction of the market behavior, for several years ahead, is needed in order to take strategic investment decision for long and expensive projects. The goal of this research is to study the relationship between population growth and the housing market. To that end, a system dynamics model is developed. System dynamics is a top-down approach that starts with the high-level behavior of a complex system to simulate the behavior of that system over time. The developed model simulates the housing market by matching the population growth with the housing demand in monthly time steps. As such, the parameters of the developed model include birth rate, life expectancy, immigration, emigration, and construction seasonality. Using these parameters, the model simulates the population size and demand for housing. For validation, the outputs of the model are compared with real-life data for the US. When complete, the model should assist market researchers in simulating the housing market. This research benefits large real estate developers, construction companies, governmental and financial agencies.

Uncovering heterogeneous effects of message framing to promote reusable cup use: A causal forest approach

This study investigated the impact of message framing strategies on promoting reusable cups adoption among South Korean consumers, amid growing global concerns about single-use plastic waste. For this research, we conducted a survey experiment with 1,316 respondents and analyzed their responses to gain framing (discounts for using reusable cups) and loss framing (additional charges for using single-use cups). We also applied causal forest methods to estimate the heterogeneous treatment effects, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of how consumer decisions and behaviors are formed. The results highlighted that loss framing generally outperformed gain framing in encouraging the use of reusable cups. However, significant demographic variations emerged: younger adults (20s–30s) responded better to gain framing, while older adults (40s–60s) were more receptive to a loss framing. The impact of loss framing was particularly powerful among larger families and individuals who prioritize environmental concerns over inconvenience or have high social norms. These findings provide valuable empirical evidence for policymakers and businesses to develop targeted strategies that effectively promote sustainable consumer behavior while maintaining economic efficiency, ultimately contributing to both environmental sustainability and market optimization.

How is China’s energy security affected by exogenous shocks? Evidence of China–US trade dispute and COVID-19 pandemic

The trade dispute between China and the United States (US) since 2018 and the global COVID-19 pandemic since 2020 has significantly impacted China’s economic development. As China’s energy sources heavily depend on imports, its economic viability is becoming more and more risky. This study proposes a novel conceptual framework, involving macroeconomic, industrial and geopolitical factors, to evaluate China’s energy security as a major player in the trade dispute. This study also provides a comprehensive strategy for policymakers to make better decisions on reforming renewable energy patterns to guarantee energy security and achieve geopolitical advantages. The PESTEL (political, economic, social, technical, environmental and legislative) and SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analytical methods are applied to evaluate the factors and attributes of China’s energy development and energy security in the current background. The China-US bipartite game reciprocity model and the QSPM (Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix) analysis are conducted to assess which energy security strategy and policy are more suitable to deal with China-US trade dispute. To enhance energy security, China should diversify its energy supply chain, develop new sources of energy supply, advance the shale gas technology, popularise cleaner power-generation plants, increase nuclear-energy safety, introduce energy-conservation measures, promote alternative-energy vehicles, engage in international energy diplomacy, and rebuild international energy transaction and settlement systems.

This paper aims to fabricate functionally graded dental crown using a multi-slurry tape casting additive manufacturing technology. The different luminescence of the dental crown was obtained with different composition of zirconia and yttria. Zirconia with tunable mechanical properties and translucency are obtained by adding 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, and 5 mol% of yttrium oxide to zirconia powder. After obtaining the printable slurry with maximum solid loading, the green bodies are prepared using the in-house built high speed multi-ceramic tape casting technology. They are later sintered with two-stage sintering method. After the successful fabrication, the mechanical properties and translucency of the specimens were evaluated with Vickers hardness, three-point bending and translucency parameter tests. Finally, an FGM tooth crown with five photocurable slurries is proposed to demonstrate the translucent gradient effect of sintered part. The solid loading of 80% zirconia and 20% resin delivered samples without any surface cracks. The shrinkage ratio analysis showed that the sintered sample dimension was reduced by 20%, 20%, and 23% along X, Y, and Z directions. The samples fabricated with 3% yttrium oxide to zirconia delivered excellent hardness (1687 HV) and flexural strength (650.6 MPa). However, the relative luminescence increased with increasing the yttrium oxide for 3 – 5 mol%. With the optimized process parameters, the proposed dental crown is fabricated and analyzed for their shrinkage ratio, mechanical, and translucency properties. Learning force control for contact-rich manipulation tasks with rigid position-controlled robots

Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods have been proven successful in solving manipulation tasks autonomously. However, RL is still not widely adopted on real robotic systems because working with real hardware entails additional challenges, especially when using rigid position-controlled manipulators. These challenges include the need for a robust controller to avoid undesired behavior, that risk damaging the robot and its environment, and constant supervision from a human operator. The main contributions of this work are, first, we propose a fail-safe mechanism for safely training an RL agent on manipulation tasks using a rigid robot. Second, to enable a position-controlled manipulator to perform contact-rich manipulation tasks, we implemented two different force control schemes based on standard force feedback controllers;one is a modified parallel position-force control, and the other one is an impedance control. Third, we empirically study both control schemes when used as the action representation of an RL agent. We evaluate the tradeoff between control complexity and performance by comparing several versions of the control schemes, each with a different number of force control parameters. The proposed methods are validated both on simulation and a real robot, a UR3 e-series robotic arm when executing contact-rich manipulation tasks. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Competition for Partners in Matching Markets

We study the competition for partners in two-sided matching markets with heterogeneous agent preferences, with a focus on how the equilibrium outcomes depend on the connectivity in the market. We model random partially connected markets, with each agent having an average degree d in a random (undirected) graph, and a uniformly random preference ranking over their neighbors in the graph. We formally characterize stable matchings in large markets random with small imbalance and find a threshold in the connectivity d at log2n (where n is the number of agents on one side of the market) which separates a "weak competition" regime, where agents on both sides of the market do equally well, from a "strong competition" regime, where agents on the short (long) side of the market enjoy a significant advantage (disadvantage). Numerical simulations confirm and sharpen our theoretical predictions, and demonstrate robustness to our assumptions. We leverage our characterizations in two ways: First, we derive prescriptive insights into how to design the connectivity of the market to trade off optimally between the average agent welfare achieved and the number of agents who remain unmatched in the market. For most market primitives, we find that the optimal connectivity should lie in the weak competition regime or at the threshold between the regimes. Second, our analysis uncovers a new conceptual principle governing whether the short side enjoys a significant advantage in a given matching market, which can moreover be applied as a diagnostic tool given only basic summary statistics for the market. Counterfactual analyses using data on centralized high school admissions in a major USA city show the practical value of both our design insights and our diagnostic principle. Current trends point to a not-too-distant future with qualitatively advanced interactions between humans and social robots. It is critical to consider the possibility of forming meaningful social relationships with robots when defining the future of human-robot interactions, as well as studying how these interactions will evolve to the point where humans are unable to distinguish between humans and robots in urban transportation. In this study, the advantages of using social robots in urban transportation are prioritized by using a multi-criteria decision-making tool, which consists of two consecutive stages, namely: i) a novel fuzzy sine trigonometry based on the logarithmic method of additive weights (fuzzy ST-LMAW) that is proposed to calculate the criteria weights;ii) a nonlinear fuzzy Aczel-Alsina function based the weighted aggregate sum product assessment (fuzzy ALWAS-WASPAS) that is developed to select and rank the alternatives. The proposed model enables flexible nonlinear processing of complex and uncertain information encountered in real applications. A case study is developed to rank three alternatives with twelve sub-criteria grouped into four aspects using the proposed method. The results show that the most advantageous alternative is to replace people with social robots as safety drivers in level four autonomous vehicles due to their possible impact on transportation. © 2023 The Authors

We present an overview of two major research projects on the role of monetary incentives and psychological traits in attracting individuals to hacking behavior. In the first study, scenarios were developed for five situations to determine if monetary incentives could be used to influence subjects to obtain healthcare information and to release that information. Approximately 35% to 46% of the 523 survey participants indicated that there is a price, ranging from $1,000 to over $10 million, acceptable for violating HIPAA laws. In the second study, 439 subjects completed a survey that identified the psychological traits that contribute to an individual's propensity to participate in White Hat, Grey Hat, or Black Hat hacking. Preliminary results suggest that individuals that are White Hat, Grey Hat and Black Hat hackers score high on the Machiavellian and Psychopathy scales. We also found evidence that Gray Hatters oppose authority, Black Hatters score high on the thrill-seeking dimension, and White Hatters, the good guys, tend to be Narcissists. Our focus on both studies is malicious insider attacks because insiders have the ability to do substantial monetary and reputational damage to the organization. Several suggestions have been made on addressing insider threats. © 1973-2011 IEEE.

In recent years, age-related changes in body composition in the elderly are attracting attention. This is associated with a decline in physical functions and an increased risk of disease development. In general, age-related changes in body composition can be minimized with appropriate exercise. However, there are no studies that investigate body parts susceptibility to aging and changes in body composition of those parts. Therefore, devising exercise programs and advising daily life while taking these into account becomes difficult. This study aims to identify body parts that are more susceptible to aging and their body composition changes. The body composition was obtained with Direct Segmental Multi-frequency Impedance Analysis using INbody770 to 10 elderly patients who had been shortly hospitalized. Statistical hypothesis testing was used to determine whether site-specific body composition changed significantly between hospital discharge and 1 year, 1 year and 2 years, and hospital discharge and 2 years. The results showed that Lean body mass, Total Body Water, and Intracellular Water in the right arm;and Total Body Water in the trunk are more sensitive to aging. This study contributes to the prevention of diseases depending on body parts and advice on daily life, nutrition, exercise prescription and rehabilitation. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
