Composite materials are strong, lightweight, and stiff making them desirable in aerospace applications. However, a practical issue arises with composites in that they behave unpredictably in bolted joints, where damage and cracks are often initiated. To address this problem, a novel hybrid composite material was developed, where thin stainless steel foils were placed between and in place of composite plies in the primary layup to reinforce stress concentrations in bolted joints. Hybridizing the composite material increased yield by as much as 25 and increased ultimate load capacity as much as 42 . The finite element models employed Hashin failure criteria and proved the ability to predict the yield load capacity to within 6.5

Dynamic traffic assignment in a corridor network: Optimum versus equilibrium

This study investigates dynamic system-optimal (DSO) and dynamic user equilibrium (DUE) traffic assignment of departure/arrival-time choices in a corridor network. The morning commute problems with a many-to-one pattern of origin-destination demand and the evening commute problems with a one-to-many pattern are considered. Specifically, a novel approach to derive closed-form solutions for both DSO and DUE problems is developed. We first derive a closed-form solution to the DSO problem based on the regularities of the cost and flow variables at an optimal state. By utilizing this solution, we prove that the queuing delay at a bottleneck in a DUE solution is equal to an optimal toll that eliminates the queue in a DSO solution under certain conditions of a schedule delay function. This enables us to derive a closed-form DUE solution by using the DSO solution. We also show the theoretical relationship between the DSO and DUE assignment. Software is an increasingly integral and sophisticated part of safety- and mission-critical systems. Poorly written software can lead to information leakage, undetected cyber breaches, and even human injury in cases where the software directly interfaces with components of a physical system. These systems may range from power facilities to remotely piloted aircraft. Software bugs and vulnerabilities can lead to severe economic hardships and loss of life in these domains. As fast as software spreads to automate many facets of our lives, it also grows in complexity. The complexity of software systems combined with the nature of the critical domains dependent on those systems results in a need to verify and validate the security and functional correctness of such software to a high level of assurance. The current generation of formal verification tools make it possible to write code with formal, machine-checked proofs of correctness. This thesis demonstrates the process of proving the correctness of code via a formal methods toolchain. It serves as a proof of concept for this powerful method of safety- and mission-critical software development.

By using deep learning approaches, Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) on a single domain has achieved many excellent results. However, cross-domain SER is still a challenging task due to the distribution shift between source and target domains. In this work, we propose a Domain Adversarial Neural Network (DANN) based approach to mitigate this distribution shift problem for cross-lingual SER. Specifically, we add a language classifier and gradient reversal layer after the feature extractor to force the learned representation both language-independent and emotion-meaningful. Our method is unsupervised, i. e., labels on target language are not required, which makes it easier to apply our method to other languages. Experimental results show the proposed method provides an average absolute improvement of 3.91% over the baseline system for arousal and valence classification task. Furthermore, we find that batch normalization is beneficial to the performance gain of DANN. Therefore we also explore the effect of different ways of data combination for batch normalization. With the development of information technology, it has become possible to collect large amounts of customer related data. In particular, retail companies have demands to extract target customers by analyzing the accumulated purchase behavior data of customers. They also need to clarify the impact of items that is related to the good customers. Therefore, a large number of retail companies use their business data for marketing activities. In this study, we focus on a company that make use of a membership-stage system. The membership-stage system sets customer ranks, which we call customer stages, based on the annual spending of each customer. Each customer is given privileges such as discounts depending on their rank. As the customer's rank move up, the customers' purchase behavior varies widely. Therefore, finding the items that lead to for customer's stage growth at each stage becomes an important goal in marketing analysis. For example, there is a framework using a linear classifier to define the importance of items between customers who belong in different stages by Yang et al.. They apply Support Vector Machine(SVM) to the purchase data of customers, classifying whether or not the customers will move up a stage in a year. During the training, moving up a stage is set positive data, and the others are set negative data. Then, they interpret the importance of items using the coefficients of the discrimination function obtained by SVM for each stage. However, the proposal of Yang et al. didn't solve the following two problems. The first problem is that the importance of items among different preferences at each stage could not be interpreted from the results. The second problem is that the features of customers that become a good customer in the first three months of the year will differ from the features of customers in the next nine month, making it difficult to devise effective feature measures. The fashion industry has been continuously growing over the years, yet it is an industry that was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors affecting buying behavior of Filipinos towards clothing apparel during the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 457 respondents who voluntarily participated and answered an online questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that marketing mix was found to have significant effects on attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, which subsequently led to purchase intention. In addition, the COVID-19 latent variable was found to have significant effects on self-perceived severity and self-efficacy, which subsequently led to attitude and purchase intention. Interestingly, marketing mix was found to have the highest effect on actual purchase, which indicated that innovation dynamics are the keys for the buying behavior. The SEM construct can be applied to determine the clothing apparel buying behaviors of consumers in other countries, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, advertisements, promotions, sales, and health safety should be considered as innovation dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Regarding environmental sustainability, the limestone mining system has become a challenge due to the magnitude of environmental degradation. Therefore, environmental changes need to be studied with the aim of identifying patterns and trends of land cover changes in time series from 2006 – 2021 in limestone mining PT. Solusi Bangun Andalas, Lhoknga site plant, Aceh Besar. The method used in this study is the use of satellite imagery combined with spatial maps using ArcGIS software. Time series visualization of satellite imagery is analyzed using trends in land use change in the form of graphs and spatial maps from year to year. The results of the analysis show that based on the analysis of the vegetation index, the trend of land use changes in vegetation gradually decreases towards barren lands even though efforts to restore ex-mining land are carried out continuously every year. However, changes in barren land have not dominated the existing vegetated land. The results also show that changes in land use have not affected changes in existing water discharge due to the limited study area.

Order picking is the process of collecting products from a specific location to complete customer orders. Two related activities that affect the order picking are the storage location of products and the order batching. In the first, the decision is where to place items arriving at the warehouse and, in the second, the decision is to group multiple customer orders into a single batch. Although these three decisions are typically addressed separately, their integration may result in an enhanced decision-making process. We study an integrated picking problem that considers these three decisions simultaneously. The aim is to obtain the best storage location of products, order batching, and picking routing that minimizes the total picking routing cost. We propose a mathematical model and an iterated greedy local search metaheuristic. The proposed approaches were assessed on pseudo-real and real-world instances. The results show that the mathematical model, solved using a general-purpose optimization solver, can generate feasible solutions for instances with up to 100 order lines in approximately 14 400 s. In contrast, the proposed metaheuristic efficiently solves instances with up to 8197 order lines in less than 4200 s, achieving improvement gaps of up to 87.2% for artificial instances. For real-world instances, the improvement reaches up to 56% compared to the solver results. An analysis was conducted under different demand scenarios showing that the metaheuristic obtained the best performance in most of the cases.

Objectives: The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control have established government quarantine facilities (GQF) to prevent the community spread of COVID-19. Medical personnel are frontline workers who must have contact with individuals in quarantine and are thus at higher risk of infection. As a reference for future recruitment, this study investigated why some medical personnel volunteer to care for individuals in GQF. Methods: The researchers used purposive sampling to recruit participants from a GQF in northern Taiwan. Focus group interviews were administered. The consistency of the interview outline content was 91%. After the interviews, content analysis was performed to examine and summarize the data. The data were coded before comparison, categorization and summarization, producing various core categories. Results: A total of 12 participants voluntarily attended our interviews, compromising 4 men and 8 women, with an average age of 48.1 ±6.4 years and an average length of service in GQF of 82.1 ± 77.1 days. Our study results revealed four aspects and six reasons that affect the voluntary participation of medical personnel in epidemic prevention tasks. The first aspect was meeting safety needs, and the reasons included sufficient personal protective equipment, complete standard operating procedures, and orientation training and in-service education and training. The second aspect was meeting the needs of love and belonging, and the reason included a good working atmosphere. The third aspect was meeting the need for self-esteem, and the reason included Taiwan's previous SARS epidemic prevention experience. Finally, the fourth aspect was meeting the need for selfrealization, and the reason was based on the humanistic concern. Conclusions: At the time of the coronavirus outbreak, various countries reported insufficient medical personnel or personnel unwilling to participate in epidemic prevention work.
