Thermo-hydraulic performance of a heat exchanger tube with inserted curved-wing tape vortex generators

In the current study, thermal patterns and flow resistance in a heat exchange tube equipped with a curved-wing tape (CWT) vortex generator were experimentally analyzed to boost performance. A range of Reynolds numbers (Re) from 4130 to 25,370 was utilized in the experiment. The curved wings were arranged in forward array patterns for pitch length ratios (P/D = PR = 2.5, 2, and 1.5) and three wing attack angles (α = 10°, 20°, and 30°). The friction factor, f, and the Nusselt number, Nu, were utilized to quantify the pressure loss and heat transmission caused by the CWT insertion. The measured data reveal that utilizing the CWT resulted in a roughly 2.55-4.37 times greater increase in Nu than the smooth tube, whereas the rise in f is approximately 7.36-46.9 times. Raising the α value causes the Nu and f to trend upward, but increasing PR causes them to trend downward. The CWT’s maximal thermal performance is approximately 1.58 at α = 10° and PR = 1.5. Correlations for f and Nu in the functional form of the CWT parameters have also been established.

As a popular city for global tourists, more than one third of the Phuket GPP depends on the hotel and restaurant sector. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused a serious physical damage to hotels and a high cancellation of bookings in the post disaster period, which, in turn, led to most THB 3 billion drop of the hotel and restaurant sector income in 2005 in Phuket. In addition, many tourism facilities in Phuket suffered bankruptcy or a slump, because they started their business again immediately after the reconstruction phase, while tourists did not really come back. This paper is an initiative study of our research project to evaluate the effects of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on Hotel Occupancy, with a focus on the speed for the physical reconstruction and tourism market recovery. We collected the physical reconstruction period and the hotel occupancy recovery data of six hotels that located in the Patong Beach of Phuket from 2003 to 2017. Through calculation, the average of damage rate (i.e., unavailability of the rooms in this study) is 55.89%, with an average speed for the physical reconstruction to rebuild the rooms about 6.07% of the overall rooms per month. The quotient of these two values indicates that the reconstruction period is around 9.2 months. However, the average period for reconstruction and tourism recovery is about 20 months. There is an about 11 months' delay between that hotel and resorts have finished the reconstruction and the tourists start to visit Phuket as usual. Therefore, the local government, local tourist authority, and hotel entrepreneurs can consider these findings in order to prepare the recovery plan for tourism industry in the future tsunami. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Seeking survivals under COVID-19: The WhatsApp platform's shopping service operations

Under COVID-19 outbreak, retail operations are seriously threatened. There are lots of cases in which physical stores basically have to stop operating. This creates problems to the firm, its employees, and consumers. Recently, Timberland in Hong Kong and various other brands such as Joyce Boutiques and The North Face have established the "" (WSO) in which consumers can shop by using the well-established communication tool "WhatsApp." Salespeople in stores provide services via WhatsApp to assist the consumers without them having to visit the stores. We collect primary data from real-world cases and theoretically explore WSO. We build a standard consumer utility based model to derive the firm's optimal pricing and employment decisions under different cases. We evaluate the impacts of COVID-19 and values of WSO implementation from the "" (WCC) welfare perspective. Our results interestingly imply that WSO is superior to the traditional online channel in terms of keeping business under the pandemic; meanwhile, implementing WSO can help stimulate demand in the physical store under COVID-19. However, whether WSO is effective to help increase the firm's profit and WCC welfare depends on both consumer type' distribution and consumers' fear of infection. When consumers' fear of infection is very polarized (i.e., extremely low or high), WSO is not recommended. We further propose that the government's subsidy for WSO implementation could be an effective way to help the firm improve its profit and WCC welfare. We also check the robustness of our study by extending the model to consider endogenous consumer type, endogenous service level, and WCC-welfare-oriented firm.

In this study, we explore the properties of certain solutions of Hofstadter's famous V -recurrence, defined by the nested recurrence relation V (n) = V (n − V (n − 1)) + V (n − V (n − 4)). First, we discover the nature behind a finite chaotic meta-Fibonacci sequence in terms of mortality in the V -recurrence. Then, we construct a new kind of quasi-periodic solution which suggests a connection with another Hofstadter-Huber recursion, H(n) = H(n − H(n − 2)) + H(n − H(n − 3)). Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Aims of this study is to analyze the comparison of the characteristics and performance of dry and wet cocoa bean supply chains. The analytical method used the characteristics and supply chain performance with qualitative descriptive analysis using the FSCN (Food Supply Chain Networking) analysis framework. The research results indicated that there are currently two cocoa bean supply chain models in East Luwu District, namely the Dry Cocoa Bean Supply Chain and the Wet Cocoa Bean Supply Chain. The dry cocoa bean supply chain consisted of farmers, collectors, wholesalers and exporters/processing industries, while the wet cocoa bean supply chain consisted of the farmers, collectors and purchasing units (PT. Mars Symbioscience). The Supply chain performance of the wet bean supply chain models showed more effective and more efficient performances with a marketing margin of IDR 31,200 per kilogram and farmer's share of 100%. The wet supply chain model could become a role model in cocoa agribusiness activities in South Sulawesi because it showed effective and efficient performance. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Venue discovery using real-world multimedia data has not been investigated thoroughly. We are referring to business and travel locations as venues in this study and aim to improve the efficiency of venue discovery by hashing. Most existing supervised cross-modal hashing methods map data in different modalities to Hamming space, where the semantic information is exploited to supervise data of different modalities during the training stage. However, previous works neglect pairwise similarity between data in different modalities, which lead to degraded performance of hashing function learning. To address this issue, we propose a supervised Generative Adversarial Cross-modal Hashing method by Transferring Pairwise Similarities (SGACH-TPS). This work has three significant contributions: i) we propose a model for making efficient venue discovery, ii) the supervised generative adversarial network can construct a hash function to map multimodal data to a common hamming space. iii) a simple transfer training strategy for the adversarial network is suggested to supervise data in different modalities where the pairwise similarity is transferred to the fine-tuning stage of training. Evaluation on the new WikiVenue dataset confirms the superiority of the proposed method.

A system for automatic detection of road damages is essential for logistics management. At the core of the system lies an algorithm for classification of damages. This work intends to establish such an algorithm. In the current proposal, the algorithm receives data of the probe vehicle rate of rotations, extracts statistics descriptive from the data to produce a feature vector, and finally, feeds the vector to a simple-three-layer neural network to classify the damages. The types of damages are limited to four cases: normal, pothole, speed bump, and expansion joint. For the development, a probe vehicle is used to produce 400 empirical data involving those four damage cases. By using Monte Carlo approach, the established neural network model is evaluated. The results show that the approach is able to classify the cases with 85% accuracy. The study also finds that the rates of pitch and roll to be the determining factors. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Traditionally, for the purpose of classifying the integrity of an engineering structure, one may use the information of the natural frequencies or mode shapes or some other measures derived from the two. In this research, we propose a classification method on the basis of the general vibration model. The general vibration model is essentially a set of differential equations describing the dynamics of the structure under consideration. For the purpose of damage detection, a deviation of the general vibration model from the dynamic equilibrium point marks the occurrence of the damage. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, we study two simplest dynamical systems consisting of one- and two-concentrated masses subjected to a prescribed dynamic load. The structural damages are introduced artificially by reducing the stiffness of spring in the structures. We find that the general vibration model is more sensitive to damages than the traditional methods.

With the explosive development of human-computer speech interaction, spoken term detection is widely required and has attracted increasing interest. In this paper, we propose a weak supervised approach using Siamese recurrent auto-encoder (RAE) to represent speech segments for query-by-example spoken term detection (QbyE-STD). The proposed approach exploits word pairs that contain different instances of the same/different word content as input to train the Siamese RAE. The encoder last hidden state vector of Siamese RAE is used as the feature for QbyE-STD, which is a fixed dimensional embedding feature containing mostly semantic content related information. The advantages of the proposed approach are: 1) extracting more compact feature with fixed dimension while keeping the semantic information for STD;2) the extracted feature can describe the sequential phonetic structure of similar sounds to degree, which can be applied for zero-resource QbyE-STD. Evaluations on real scene Chinese speech interaction data and TIMIT confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach compared to the conventional ones. © 2018 International Speech Communication Association. A Study of the Sensitivity of the Fuel Consumption to Driving Strategy by Micro Simulation

Global warming due to excessive emission greenhouse gases is a significant issue faced by humanity, and collectively, cars and trucks contribute about 20% to the entire global-warming gases. For a reason, recently, many attempts have been endured to reduce the emission and to increase fuel efficiency, including vehicle platooning, better driving strategy, and increasing engine efficiency. This study intends to provide a more detail assessment regarding the effects of the driving strategy to fuel consumption. For the purpose, the vehicle dynamics are quantified by employing the car-following model based on the optimal velocity model. The fuel consumption is estimated from the regression model of Ahn 18 . The result suggests that the braking distance strongly affects fuel consumption.
